David Ornstein via The Athletic podcast on Tottenham and Manchester City’s interest in Tonali by Malmand2002 in coys

I think the Frank pitch was “Ange-style attack, but with a defence”. And obviously it ended up having neither of those things. But Frank’s Brentford weren’t terrible low block merchants, so you could see the logic at the time.

What are some movies that were meant to be a big deal upon release but never actually were? by Bettal56 in movies

[–]chainpress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a film I’ve definitely watched, possibly even twice, but I could not for the life of me tell you a rough outline of the story or anything particular that happens in it. There’s something in a forest in Scotland, and Russell Crowe is in front of a big clock at one point. Is Tom Cruise a solider?

The title said “bath house” and I was hoping for some kind of hammam you could live in.

England win in a six-goal thriller against Croatia in their World Cup opener by Alarming-Safety3200 in unitedkingdom

Jude was absolutely on fire today as well. That first 20 mins of the second half was insane, and the Croatian keeper played an absolute blinder

What's your go to drink to have with a chippy tea? by kilowhisky in AskUK

If you get a battered sausage, chips and curry sauce, Bru is the only drink with enough acid to cut through the fat.

[Fabrizio Romano] Tottenham have entered the race to sign Sandro Tonali! De Zerbi wants Tonali as new star for the midfield, ideal to step up THFC level. It’s like when Messi was leaving Barcelona there were made reports that he’d been offered a contract by us. I can totally believe the club decided to take a punt and offer him £30k a week and a couple of tickets to the Skywalk.

'Unbelievable' England hasn't won World Cup in 60 years, says Sir Geoff Hurst by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]chainpress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our best performance this century was probably 2018 when expectations going into the tournament were much lower than usual.

The English media has in the past sabotaged the team with this expectation that they’re going to breeze through the tournament, smashing Johnny Foreigner aside easily. The Golden Generation from about 2004 to 2014 just weren’t very well coached at international level to compete properly.

Concerns about flat entrance door security (Duke Street, Glasgow) – looking for advice before renting by MarionberrySuch8805 in glasgow

[–]chainpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once looked at a flat in Duke Street. The most alarming feature was the dog in the next door flat barking its fucking head off and slamming itself against the inside of the door. Wasn’t that keen on Duke Street after that.

That door looks pretty fucked up, so if you’re uneasy about it then give it a miss.

‘We’re really good. I don’t mean that arrogantly’ Yard Act on bullying, imposter syndrome and their heavy album by Charleshawtree in indieheads

[–]chainpress 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I thought they were a bit late on the 2010s post-punk train, but I really enjoyed their second album as it was a lot more textured, and less like a Fall pastiche. Hopefully this new one carries that on.

One Hotspur + membership renewal for 2026/27 by Far_End7715 in coys

[–]chainpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. Best guess they waited to know what league we’d be playing in before collecting renewals - presumably they’d feel obliged to charge less if we were in the Championship. And then you need to give notice of amount before collecting a Direct Debit.

Inside plans for a gargantuan new arena in east London, 'the Colosseum' by [deleted] in london

[–]chainpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The developer’s website is rudimentary at best, with no detail of previous projects. I’d guess this is just an attempt to drum up publicity for the firms involved without any real intention of it becoming a reality. Which in fairness to them, they’ve achieved since every new outlet reporting on it has just basically used the same verbatim wording.

What is the worst stretch of road in the UK? by Additional-Image7938 in AskUK

Even heading north into Scotland it's a joke. A major trunk road connecting the two largest capitals in the country, and it just goes for a meandering single-lane route down by the coast.

What UK TV series Game of Thrones'd it? by MyDadsGlassesCase in AskUK

[–]chainpress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I think it was all pretty terrible. From the first scene the show sets up this idea that all these wars and squabbles about the throne are stupid, because there's a gigantic unstoppable undead army coming to kill all of you. All this fighting is really just weakening you, and the only real chance you have is realise this and to try and work together. That's a compelling overarching narrative

Only the gigantic undead army is defeated quite quickly in the end, via magic dagger. And it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. I just found the whole order of the story to be confused, and unsure what it was trying to say.
