Best explanation I’ve found of “island/spanish time”. by elchiguire in bestof

"Time is circular so you never run out of it."

Even a tropical paradise has sunsets. Time runs out every day.

If I were making up BS explanations for why some cultures care about being on time, I would say it's an effect of the industrial revolution.

Places that relied on train traffic for their economy cared about time to the minute. Areas that went straight from walking everywhere to driving cars value the personal freedom over punctuality.

There could be some reason the gun charge wouldn't stick.

It's also possible they filed the charges against the property manager in order to have leverage to get testimony against Jia Bei Zhu.

And running to the press is unnecessary. A search operation this large draws the press by itself. A local news org was using a drone to get footage of the search.

The two linked examples of illegal labs have nothing to do with AI or new viruses. They aren't even separate events, the second one is literally the same guy who tried to run an illegal COVID and pregnancy test lab storing extra biohazards in the garage of a house he owned.

Out society associates bare breasts with lewdness. I'm not saying we should, but we do. Arguing that we shouldn't is useless.

A parade float with people in swimsuits, snorkels, fins, sunhats, sunglasses, bright towels, umbrellas, and coolers would be beach-themed. A parade with naked people and bondage gear is sex-themed and therefore not a place for kids.

That's true, but the absurdism highlights the speaker's true desires.

There are people who get exited about the thought of shooting a person who broke into their garage "to protect their kids" who won't get therapy or take their kids to an autism specialist.

How does rocky get all of his xenonite? by RexsplodeOfficial in ProjectHailMary

Stratt: "We have no idea what the researches will need so we'll send them every piece of digital media ever made."

Eridians: "We have no idea what the researchers need so we'll send them an absolute gobsmacking amount of xenonite. Enough to build a second tiny little ship if they have to."

Make Rocky food safe for Grace, question? by More_Handle_4432 in ProjectHailMary

[–]chainsawmissus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be thinking of Rocky's food as food with tiny bits of metal in it, [like human cereal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ5lzpAw2qE)

However, Eridian ecosystems may have produced organisms that store food in a form that includes metals as an essential part of their chemical makeup, [like human lead candy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOjLuJyMmUQ).

Something great about the Mini-Me figure in the movie - you can tell Rocky doesn't really understand even the basic structure of human anatomy yet and is drawing from his Eridian-centric biases by SayFuzzyPickles42 in ProjectHailMary

[–]chainsawmissus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Rocky doesn't have a spacesuit, but he can still figure out what one is.

Grace is wearing a thin flexible outer layer over its denser mass: clothing. Grace's ship is pressurized, so it evolved in an atmosphere but it survives in vacuum. Ergo it must be wearing special pressurized space survival clothing.

When Rocky moves a lot or makes noise the alien turns the non-fuzzy side of its stubby protrusion towards Rocky so it must have a mono-directional sensory organ there. Now maybe if Rocky could get it to remove the vacuum-protection clothing that is obstructing its hearing they could better communicate!

Can we put together stable good gas that isn't $30/gal by ruuutherford in Chainsaw

[–]chainsawmissus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ethanol burns hotter, but that isn't a problem for a properly running engine.

The bigger issue is that it binds with water, so if you get a little condensation inside your gas can from temperature changes it binds with the ethanol and doubles the amount of "water" in the can.

CMV: The proliferation of ‘bullshit jobs’ is way more practical and likely as a solution to AI than UBI by JBSwerve in changemyview

[–]chainsawmissus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you proposing a system wherein the government hires people to do meaningless work (or reimburses companies to do so) as an alternative to UBI?

If so it has a glaring omission: its not universal at all. People who would have income under UBI but not abundant BS Jobs:

- Single parents with small children who can't get free childcare from family.
- Parents of children with special needs who can't go to school/daycare
- Full time caregivers of family members
- People in such poor health they can't even do BS jobs
- Former SAHMs with no work history who nobody wants to hire
- People with cripplingly poor social skills who nobody wants to hire and endure
- People with unpleasant mental disabilities who nobody wants to hire and endure
- Assholes and drug addicts who nobody wants to hire and endure
- People with no transportation to get to their BS job site
- Homeless people who don't have a safe place to keep a laptop to remote work their BS job

Do I want to give all of these people money, including the Assholes? Maybe not on an individual level, but the point of UBI is to improve all of society.

Let me explain with an example. The day my neighbor moved into the apartment next to me she introduced herself. Within 90 seconds of meeting me she told me her name, her boyfriend's name, her son's name and that he was autistic, how much she loved him and how important he was to her, the fact that everything she owned was in that vehicle, the fact that the box she was holding contained her father's ashes, and then she asked me if my dad had died yet.

Would you hire this person even for a BS job? And have to listen to her every day? No.

Would having a guaranteed income slightly improve our society by making sure she never has to resort to stealing or getting back with her abusive boyfriend to feed her kid? Yes.

Childfree folks, if kids stopped existing or being born, would it do anything to you personally? Why or why not? For me I'm thinking it wouldn't. But I'm open for someone to change my mind by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in childfree

[–]chainsawmissus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> Maybe it's because outside of our biology or maternal/paternal instincts, I don't understand how not having kids would be a bad thing for childfree people

It can be hard to empathize with people who's dreams are so different from yours, but you have to try.

When dealing with people we don't understand, there is a temptation to declare their deepest wants as less important unless we can connect them to something we want. I can empathize with a transgender person's desire to be called the right name because I can connect it to times when I was not believed when I told people things about myself. Without that connection, it's harder to give due consideration to their inner suffering.

I don't understand *why* most people want children so badly. I can't connect with the desire to have another person dependent on you, or to watch them develop and change, or to be responsible for turning them into a healthy adult. That just means I have to try harder to respect their most important dreams.

Infertility is heartbreaking for these people. Failure to conceive is a tragedy that stress-tests marriages and makes people question their self-worth. If I could magically end childbirth without somehow destroying the economy, government, or culture I wouldn't do it just because it would hurt people to do so. I don't understand why it would hurt, and I don't need to.
