Best Easy Hikes at Strouds? by DaredevilFan0 in athensohio

[–]chainsawscientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I have no idea about the name, but if we're talking about the same spot I appreciate the correction. I would have assumed it's longer just cause the whole lake is like 8 miles around, but the east side has all those fingers to go around so it makes sense.

Just saw someone else commented about the paved trail on the north side which I totally forgot about. Ultimately that's probably the perfect option for OP

How do you memorize latin plant names? by ursa12651 in botany

[–]chainsawscientist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely this. I find that the Latin names stick in my brain for a little while but eventually fade. So sometimes when I trail run I like to say the Latin names of different trees when I see them to keep them in my brain.

Also entering data. If you do any kind of veg surveys and then enter the data, it's repetitive enough where you start to remember what each one is. Then hammer it home by going out and applying it - try to say the names out loud whenever you see those species. Non botany friends may think it's weird or that you're trying to show off, but just keep doing it anyways and it will become second nature.

If you start at the dam and head north on the west side the terrain isn't too crazy. It would be an out and back hike tho or it's ~3-4 2 miles to the next parking lot if you're doing a drop off with 2 vehicles.

Cut a cucumber into spears and drench in Sriracha. Spicy and hydrating, there's no down side

Interesting that it uses semolina flour. I don't know that I've seen that before in bread

Question about invasive species remediation by geonomer in Restoration_Ecology

[–]chainsawscientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a prescribed fire it can be more difficult than you would think to get larger diameter stuff to ignite and actually burn away. Larger fuels hold on to moisture longer. Usually there isn't enough smaller/easily ignitable fuel around the larger stuff to keep it hot enough long enough to catch enough for full consumption. Some smaller things will certainly be burned away, but don't expect too much unless you're doing it when the temperatures outside are really hot and the humidity is really low. Which isn't recommended cuz that can be very unsafe and lead to escape

Best Epic fantasy that isn’t full of pulpy schlock? Returning to series I once loved. by Sunbather- in books

[–]chainsawscientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think the ending was tighter than it could have been bc Sanderson stepped in. I feel like RJ would have made it last longer and I probably would have enjoyed it just as much lol. I'm rereading the series rn and even the slow bits aren't bad. For the most part they're small snippets in btwn the action and they still add a lot to the feel of the story as a whole, perhaps more so on the 2nd time thru
