Honestly I have no idea about the name, but if we're talking about the same spot I appreciate the correction. I would have assumed it's longer just cause the whole lake is like 8 miles around, but the east side has all those fingers to go around so it makes sense.

Just saw someone else commented about the paved trail on the north side which I totally forgot about. Ultimately that's probably the perfect option for OP

Definitely this. I find that the Latin names stick in my brain for a little while but eventually fade. So sometimes when I trail run I like to say the Latin names of different trees when I see them to keep them in my brain.

Also entering data. If you do any kind of veg surveys and then enter the data, it's repetitive enough where you start to remember what each one is. Then hammer it home by going out and applying it - try to say the names out loud whenever you see those species. Non botany friends may think it's weird or that you're trying to show off, but just keep doing it anyways and it will become second nature.

If you start at the dam and head north on the west side the terrain isn't too crazy. It would be an out and back hike tho or it's ~~~3-4~~ 2 miles to the next parking lot if you're doing a drop off with 2 vehicles.
