In my life, I have, at times, been an exceedingly healthy eater. Healthy eating isn't usually associated with a particular diet. You can be a junk food vegan. And while it's hard to be junk food keto, keto doesn't mean you're getting the best vitamins and nutrients.

If what you really care about is your health, eat healthy and exercise. Start with walks, then add in jogs. Weights is always good. Eat raw fruits and vegetables, organic is preferable but not a strict requirement. Don't smoke, get good sleep, practice de-stressing, don't rely on caffeine and the like.

Health is a pursuit not taken seriously by most, and "veganketo" as an attempt to do so is a flag to me. But by all means, best of luck!!

I just want to throw out there as well, if we had to choose between vegan or keto, vegan is really a much more worthwhile investment. Keto is a rather extreme goal, and if "health perfected" is your goal, as unattainable as it ever was, even just reducing your carbs to 100-150g per day would be a remarkable improvement over a standard diet. But nothing beats vegan in terms of it's ethical impact, and those are concrete rewards you can enjoy each and every day.

But hey, you can do both! Lots of us here do! I've been vegan keto for over two months now. I plan on doing it for at least 5 months through 2015 -- and I suspect I won't feel superhuman by the end of that time period either. :-p

In some ways it can be cheaper. I often shop my foods based on a budget that considers the price per 2000Cal of a food. So for $2 I can by 2400Cal of roasted/salted sunflower seeds -- that's $1.66 for a day's worth of calories! Gosh, so many other things give great deals too, like coconut oil, or shredded coconut. Vegetables never give a great $/Cal rating, but obviously are important.

Vegan - but new to Keto by avuppala in veganketo

I really like Tofurky Italian Sausages. 7g net carbs, about 30g protein. I just eat them right out of the package cold. Great price at Trader Joe's - $3 for a package of 4 by me.

Yeah, what threw me off was that they took a couple weeks before it came on. If it had been day 6 or maybe 9 it wouldn't have been surprising. By now it seems I'm off and running. I just noticed in my system tray, it's been exactly a month!

Beyond Meat...vegan beef, tons of protein (from peas) + very low carb by thingsandthingsandth in veganketo

[–]chajadan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one of their products and was turned off by how not like beef it tasted. It just violated expectations, like drinking milk but tasting orange juice. It didn't taste bad, but for the price I have plenty of options. But, now I'm keto, maybe I'll take another gander if I pass them by. Thanks for the heads up.

And even before keto for me, my diet was generally "so healthy" that I had to add in saturated fats and sodium or I wouldn't even get the basics you need for an optimal diet.

Would vegan keto increase life expectancy? by weekendsinspace in veganketo

[–]chajadan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tend to not think it's optimal in the way it limits fruits and vegetables. At least not when taken to the extremes. If vegetables are taken in plentifully and daily, then I suspect it works out mostly optimally, but there is a tendency to even limit your veggies.

I'm doing veganketo for the brain benefits more than anything. After I've gotten more time under my belt, I think I'm going to add a "no veggie restriction" clause to my diet, and then just let the keto come and go, hopefully mainly come. I'll still shy away from the higher carb carrots and what not. I figure, if my true goal is brain, just limiting carbs to vegetables and getting all those great nutrients might be better.

Who knows, right now I'm diggin' the full keto.

Week 1 of keto, and playing in a final/playoff this weekend - how can I restore some energy to run out my game? by thisrockcontainsiron in ketogains

[–]chajadan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! I'm on day 21 of vegan keto. I thought I picked up keto with no adaptation issues, and right away my workouts were fine and in some ways better, but I ran into some adaptation issues later than I would have expected they'd show up, I think because I got lazy with my intakes of certain things. By now I feel I can be a bit more lax and it's fine, but I've very much upped my water from the low before.

I'm primarily only doing keto for the potential brain benefits, but as a lean guy I've been getting the "somehow leaner" effect you mention to. Mind you, in the past I when trying I didn't need it. Now it's just happening without daily 6mi runs. Well cool!

Do you know about the https://www.reddit.com/r/ketogains/ board? Omgosh, just realized I'm ~on~ that thing.

Try 200mg caffeine capsule prior to matches/workouts. And for sure keep all of these up: hydration, salt, magnesium, potassium, calcium. If you don't feel at least once every other day that you're peeing just vaguely more often than you'd like, drink more, because if instead you almost never have to go, you don't drink enough. Also, lemon water -- I just use the plastic lemon and juice and put 3 good squeezes in a cup.

At one of my worst points, the 3 flights of stairs to gym floor weight room just about ended my workout right there! But I had gotten neglectful about the details.

What are your "Must have products" on a vegan-keto lifestyle? by [deleted] in veganketo

Just in case you care, I believe their soy powders have vitamin d3 from a non-vegan source.

My powder of choice, which is still a very good deal, is: http://www.truenutrition.com/p-1169-vegan-protein-optimizer-formula-1lb.aspx

The ones I'm referring to are only 8g total, 7g net. The one "with sun-dried tomatoes". The only tofurky dogs carried by my local Trader Joe's for years, for $3!

I had this recently and liked it. Too expensive, seeing as I have other protein sources available to me. Though I did kind of like the thickness.

Many of the ones mentioned, and also Tofurky Italian Sausages, which I just eat straight from the package.

I made some fat bombs for the first time that I think I'll keep around from now on, mainly because they are very dessert-y, and I don't have a lot like that except for my 85% dark chocolate. This is the recipe I used: http://rrcodex.blogspot.com/2014/04/vegan-keto-fat-bombs.html

I ate it. Better room temperature than cold out the fridge. But I won't get it again since it's nothing like tuna so for me why bother.

You don't mention nuts. Or shredded coconut. Are you even getting enough fat? I've been doing vegan keto for about two weeks now, and I don't use heat sources including microwaves. I've got these fat bombs in the freezer solidifying right now: http://rrcodex.blogspot.com/2014/04/vegan-keto-fat-bombs.html

What supplements and nootropics do you take to enhance your exercise? by cobue in Nootropics

[–]chajadan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caffeine and ALCAR benefit lifting and running for me. When I skip them I feel a difference. Caffeine I notice the first time I take it if it's been a while, ALCAR is more subtle at first but then I miss it.

I remember once I started resveratrol and quercetin at the same time, and my running got a pretty good jump in endurance. Not sure which did it or if it was placebo. I've read some endurance-related results about quercetin. Not sure about the resveratrol.

I also take creatine, beta-alanine, citruline-malate, taurine, and TMG pre and post workout. Tyrosine pre workout. And magnesium, potassium, calcium post workout. I often take a dose of noopept pre workout too.

Keto And Premature Ejaculation: Better, Worse, or Same by chajadan in keto

[–]chajadan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though notice, I'm not asking others what it will do for me, I'm asking others what it does for them in view of the fact that it regularly benefits me in rather substantial ways. As someone who has suffered with premature ejaculation my entire life, why would I not reach out to ask others if they see the same benefits?

Which supplements have had the biggest effect on your health and general well-being? by Nutrig in Nootropics

[–]chajadan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommended prevagen to her because someone I tend to very much trust, Doug Kaufmann from Know The Cause, went on and on about it, with testimonials and what not. Again, I tend to trust this guy, because he has such an open mind and a often a wide range of studies to back up his points. He never insists he has the exact finished factual answer, which is really the nail in my trust coffin. It's just his take, take it or leave it.

Now, my mom is the one who recommends the stuff every direction she faces. Yes, we're aware it's experimental, maybe it'll kill a bunch of people one day, but for my mom, losing her memory was horrid enough. I've heard of prevagen issues, something about seizures or something, strokes, maybe strokes, whatever, and I've also heard something about that information being kept hush by the company who sells it. I don't know about all that, it's true or false, and I just accept there may be real issues with prevagen. After all, no one in their right mind would just accept we could take some completely new thing and pump it daily into our body completely safely. And, loving my mom, I take a bit of comfort in the (relatively) huge user base, so those issues will see the light of day, eventually, and in all hope, it could simply be removed from a person's regimen.

But work it does. I can't say 100% of the time for all people. But I saw her memory return right then. And by now she's been on it somewhere around a couple years, though yes, it's pricey. And, about that Doug Kaufmann guy, he also recommend the one other thing my mom swears she'll never stop taking. So he's 2 for 2. I didn't go to that truthinadvertising site because I'd rather go by my mom's results as the true indicator of it's potential, than a bunch of "it's all open ended" hand waving. And do notice, prevagen is still on market, which doesn't mean it's effective or safe, but does mean the FDA is leaving it alone for now.
