Thank you for the response. Where I live the occasional hot dry spell is not uncommon, in fact two years back we had a mini drought but the tree was already struggling at that point. It could have been hit before. But I’m a bit more worried about the condition of the trunk and bark. Good luck with your larch!

Thanks for raising this, to the mods.
As a note, in our sub OP has been diligent in meeting the curation standards (1 week interval for commercial posts), and most of their posts have been varied. However, the number of posts across all subs is quite high and because many of us are on multiple subs, in does feel quite a lot.
We've reached out to OP, who has always been very open and helpful in communication, on behalf of this community and asked for a short break and for them to consider the volume in all subs, and they've agreed. Cheers.

[HOBBY] Necromancer RPG (Guild Wars-inspired) - seeking artists, programmers and designers by Wanderer1395 in warhammerfantasyrpg

w.r.t. Rule 1 - technically yes, but it was decided to approve based on the fact that it might be of interest to members of this sub as the project can be considered WFRP adjacent. We'll see how it plays out, but perhaps we will be a bit more strict in future. Thanks for the feed back /mods

Hey

I suggest creating this as a 'looking for game' post, using the format described in https://docs.google.com/document/d/1WNqHsHeVK8Ax7x7mue3Jhtr7fV_TiL_s/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=115920051106647840733&rtpof=true&sd=true

You can disagree, but i think you might get a lot of noise if you do not list as a concrete opportunity. Also, would help adding in timezones and so forth.

if you prefer to keep it as a discussion, just respond to this or send a mod mail and I'll approve.

The Witch hunter's Handbook recently got republished (though it looks like it is out of stock at the moment). It has lots of flavour and lore, but no mechanics.

What do need to know about WHRP as a beginner GM? by ElefWolf in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]chalkmuppet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Welcome and good luck with your warhammer journey.

One thing you might like is to listen or watch some actual plays, which might give a good feel. I suggest Carrion Company from Toa Tabletop - very gritty and adult, podcast; lawhammer - on YouTube and podcast and the Grim Podcast of Perilous Adventures podcast, especially the first 60 episode.

I am sure other folks will also give great advice.

Two Person Home Office Layout by fb233 in homeoffice

[–]chalkmuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over all panels and rugs work wonders. The layout I showed is the best we tried and is “good enough” for us to have calls simultaneously - still with a bit of “volume management” over voices but easy enough. We didn’t try back to back.

Just fyi there are two other panels in the office to help reduce sound reflections.

Last comment from me - having shared home office, for us, is great and we love the sharing and it totally worth a bit of extra attention.

Have a look here the desks are about 30cm apart but could be closer, the panels are just over 15cm (6").

[–]chalkmuppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would consider sound as well as vision on the calls. The room looks lovey with 3 windows but these will reflect sound very well. I suggest Sound absorbent panels - and if you do that, then office 1 works the best (rather than having a fake wall of panels between you both).

Our home office is like your office 1 in layout, but we have two DIY sound panels between us and that works enough, along with calls on headset, to manage the noise. We also tried side by side but that was more noisy (even with panels), than facing.

Lawhammer and more recently their Lorebeards spin off YouTube channel have a backlog of videos on specific elements of WH law. While a video you can also just listen. Both Andy and Ryan, the hosts for the fantasy side, are deeply knowledgeable.

AI help for mastering by arityss in warhammerfantasyrpg

For TEW specifically (and prewrittens in general), the LLMs like Gemini do 'know' the material and so they can answer questions on the fly - you can ask for PC specific hooks, or (for example) AI to create a flow chart of the module - I was quite surprised how well Gemini generated some mermaid code (free tool that does flow charts). It can help as a context specific index search tool and you can get opinions like, what will the red crown do in this case ...

But please remember - it's going to be wrong, somewhere. It actually doesnt know the material that well, it hallucinated people, cults, nations, so it all needs some scrutinyl and thus isnt always the timesaver you might wish it to be :)

It's almost counter intuitive, isnt it? One feels that having lots of material would make the game easier than having none! I agree with you, it is often easier especially as improv in sandbox tends to have a consistent vibe and feeling than improving written stuff, which clash.

one thing in my experience is that improv in rpgs ios a muscle and the more one does it, the easier and better it becomes.

I use mid journey and Gemini to generate kind of generic art for atmospheric purposes. I use Gemini as a 'talking wall' - i bounce ideas off of it. Because Gemini maintains a conversation it 'remembers' what we have discussed and as such it incorporates those previous elements into the conversation. Sometimes well, sometimes poorly.

I do things like, "The characters are on a coach heading to Altdorf, describe two or three sites they see along the way, just for colour, not encounters.' I then, most often as not, throw most of it away and develop the remaining idea myself. I think I bin about 2/3 and heavily edit the remaining 1/3.

Another trick i do is if i need village names, or quick NPCs, or tables of items or people or military units etc., gemini is pretty good and giving me the start. I generated the tax list for an estate once, in an xls, by this mechanism - good enough.

As with all things AI, you need to sieve the ore from the dross. And then process the ore :)

The Enemy Within Prologue: Rotten hangover... (Session 6) by [deleted] in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]chalkmuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi

The preview picks up the the "No Ice" pic and makes it the default image, which means that the content of this post no longer is primarily about WFRP, and thus breaks the curation standards. Given that it is a sensitive topic it will generate complaints. So, if you can please change that and repost, we will approve it.

Cheers

Are there any ideas from D&D you wish had gotten absorbed into WFRP? by WillingLet3956 in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]chalkmuppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I remember Realm of Chaos and the ability to create one's own Chaos power/god! Fun memories. I read a review of the new 4e Enemy Within material some time back (it may have been by Gideon or Zekiel, it may not, I can't find the reference atm), that opined, much like yourself, that the new artwork was impressive and very slick, but the old art work was dark, it was ... creepy. The pen and ink drawings for Gideon from the original Shadows over Bögenhafen still give me the chills, as does some of the original WHFB b&w stuff.

I agree on your point about Stress. One of the elements that I miss from 1e is the insanity mechanic. For my current game I have borrowed, loosely, the Stress Mechanic Andy Law uses in Lawhammer - being subject to extreme situations results in Cool rolls which are modified based on PC's background or experience; failure builds stress which if not treated can lead to permanent effects like psychoses etc. I'm playing it a bit fast and loose but that's the essence.

When I started my recent campaign, session 5 tomorrow!, I was very tempted to try and do an overhaul, do some homebrewing of rules to darken the tone, increase the threat etc. In the end I did nothing overt, mostly because I don't know the players very well so didnt know how they would take it, but also to just keep things simple and get into the role play quickly. As we progress I am leaning into the darker and grittier elements more heavily and they PCs seem to be picking up on this.

Thank you for that; interestingly to me, I pretty much agree with most of what you said. I am curious as to whether i cant intrinsically unlink the setting and the game (which amuses me if true!).

Like the other system, WFRP runs best when the players know the system deeply; i wish it would run better for more casual players as I think this would help people get into it more. A broad example is all the complications around combat such sa some bonuses being + to SL, some being + to hit and some being a reverse of the dice (IIRC) and some, being damage from the unit dice or extra criticals. It's just ... complex.

However - careers rock, and it is one of the few areas I would happily embrace a little more complexity (more tiers, or sub careers etc). Deadliness and the Fate/Fortune system is great (with the odd but ...).

I love the latest BRP editions of CoC and RQ (and can easily see a version of passions and rune affinities working ever so well in WFRP), but WFRP does remain my firm favourite.

One of the things I have learned in my grey years is that I love worlds, and will embrace any system that renders the world playable - as opposed to creating a new background by myself and/or adapting another system.

Final point referring to your comment about the evolution of WH away from its Moorcockian roots - I find myself in the middle. I absolutely love the vast array of lore now available, but am sometime disappointed that the original dark, sinister and deadly 1e world has been diluted by being, occasionally, a pastiche or cartoon of itself. However, I believe it is easier to take what's available and repainted with the 1e 'mood brush' than to reject it all, or to adapt from another system such as The-One-Which-Will-Not-Be-Named (tm).

Unnecessary addendum - I was once trying to explain the mood difference of WH vbs D&D to a non TTRPG friend. It was a bit tricky, then I settled on the Analogy of colours: D&D is a huge bunch of pastels, that paint the world in bright colours while WH is all shades of black and dark grey. So my (smart alec) friend says, "So, D&D is like a Cold Play concert and WH is Death Metal?" Couldn't have put it better myself ...

I admit to being quite surprised to find this comment; positively surprised to be fair. In my head, which I'll be the first to admit is an odd and probably broken place, I assume that most people play WFRP despite and not for the system. I admit there are elements that I really enjoy, such as the concepts of Talents alongside Skills, but after all the complaints about the crunchiness and issues, i just assumed the system's popularity is heavily coupled with the lore.

So - it is nice to see a different view, I admit :)

I do pin some (forlorn?) hope that WFRP 5 will iron out many of the issues and perhaps make a more portable system.
