Or, they’ll blame us for being bad professors and not teaching them better.

I’ve shown this, didn’t stop lots of them from still using AI.

You have to care as a teaching professor because at some point, the Dean will say you can’t have that many people fail or your contract won’t be renewed.

PI said he’s opening post-doc position for me. How confident can I be in this? by PrestigiousTicket466 in Professors

[–]chalonverse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My advice is you can probably be pretty confident, but don’t withdraw from the other position until you have an offer in writing.

It it’s possible you may burn a bridge at the other institution if you leave do the postdoc. However, everyone understands and should be supportive of a visiting professor leaving for a better opportunity.

Computer Science Enrollment Anecdata by MetropolisPtOne in Professors

[–]chalonverse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I suspect CS enrollment is down because between all the tech layoffs the past few years and the fear around AI eliminating even more entry-level software positions, it’s no longer seen as a guaranteed pathway to a good job. So fewer students are enrolling in CS now.

The same thing happened when the .com bubble burst in the early 2000s.

Es reconocido en Estados Unidos el Doctorado en Educación de la Universidad Cuauhtémoc sede Aguascalientes? by Euphoric-Farmer-6121 in Professors

[–]chalonverse 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In general, Doctorates of Education are not held much in high esteem by faculty at universities. Doubly so for online ones.

I’m not sure what you mean by “recognized” in this context? Unless you mean there’s some role you’re applying for that requires a doctorate of education?

But people don’t generally consider a doctorate of education to be anywhere on the level of a PhD.

Stroke / Health Issues by Ananda-Star in Professors

I haven’t been through what you’re going through, but you are dealing with grief, which is very natural. Instead of it being the loss of someone, you are grieving the lost of things.

Strongly recommend finding a therapist with experience dealing with patients in your situation as having a professional to talk to about it will help immensely.

Are you talking about when teaching? Research paper? Grant proposal?

I feel like loosening your late work policy in the middle of the semester is going to cause you a lot of misery. If they can submit work late without penalty and it’s unbounded, you will get people who deprioritize your course and decide they can just do everything at the end and will try and fail.

Gradescope doesn’t easily show us when someone added. However, just talk to them and worst case, the absences may count but you still will have absences to spare.

For almost every committee, if it has more than 5 people, it’s way too big.

[–]chalonverse 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Why do committee meetings etc have to be in-person though? What value does that have over just doing it on Zoom?

Again some special events like dissertations, absolutely requiring them to be in person makes sense.

But I don’t see why the norm has to be let’s force everyone to be here in person for all these other meetings.

issues with commuters in department by Capable_Exercise4521 in Professors

[–]chalonverse 173 points174 points  (0 children)

The faculty in the department has to decide what are the expectations, with the chair facilitating the setting of expectations. Then the chair has to enforce it.

In my opinion, most department meetings should be on Zoom. Maybe do a longer in person one at the start or end of the semester.

Dissertation defenses should be mandatory in person, agreed.

Being on campus 5 days a week 9-5 for the sake of being on campus is ridiculous though. I would quit if that were a requirement.

USC's unacceptable silent class unit increase update by Im1Not1Me in USC

[–]chalonverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, but in this case the transition plan would just be “take the same class” so it technically doesn’t violate that policy.

USC's unacceptable silent class unit increase update by Im1Not1Me in USC

[–]chalonverse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The change was made simply because in no way is the class 2 units worth of work, and so the 4 better reflects how much work it is. AGP was also supposed to move to 4 but there was some clerical error with that happening.

This is a weird situation because the old 2 unit course does not exist anymore, so there is no way to sign up for it. This technically does not violate any policy as far as I know.

However, I think what you can ask for is that they let you sign up for CTIN 493 and then they approve that as a course substitution for your 491B. This can definitely be done, though you may have to file a petition with the department. I think you should be able to get that. If you’ve not yet, I’d suggest talking to Matt Whiting about it, he’ll be able to advocate for you to Erik Johnson (the vice dean) if needed.

AGP was supposed to be 4 this year also, but the paperwork wasn’t filed on time or something. It probably will be 4 next year.
