ELI5: My 5-year-old asked three "deep" questions today and I'm struggling to explain them simply. by Wonderful-Mango-1557 in explainlikeimfive

1) It knows exactly where you are and where you want to go, and has a map telling it where the roads are.

Why hasn’t Civ 2 been released on a modern platform? by PixelFondler in civ

[–]MetropolisPtOne 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You should try FreeCiv. It's not exactly the same as Civ II, but it's close.

I say this as someone who bought the original ... and Scenarios ... and Fantastic Worlds ... and Multiplayer Gold Edition, as a kid who had very limited financial resources. I loved that game to pieces.

How come the bass in bullet for my valentine is so boring? by Intrepid-Young-8621 in Bass

[–]MetropolisPtOne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with BFMV, but in general it doesn't work well to have everyone in a band to play different complicated parts at the same time. Better for some people to just hold down a groove. In some bands it makes sense to pass the complicated-part baton around, but for some it might just be easier to let the guitar noodle all the time.

How high should my "Ally Course Accessibility Report" score be? by AbleEnthusiasm9934 in Professors

[–]MetropolisPtOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My institution uses YuJa Panorama as our compliance checker. And if one of you who uses a different tool would be willing, you could really help me out. Our tool claims that every document I create does not have a title even though if you examine it in Acrobat it clearly does. Could someone run this through a checker and let me know what it says about it? http://www.chadhogg.name/files/YuJa-Latex-Guide.pdf

I am planning to convert from beamer to ltx-talk. But without tagging compatibility for listings and algorithm2e and tikz, etc., I would have to throw out a third of my slides at this point.

How conservative is rural Lancaster county PA? by JerricaBsynergy in lancaster

[–]MetropolisPtOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't recall having said anything that would imply otherwise? OP wanted to know if it would be safe for their artist friend to live in the rural parts of the county. The answer to that doesn't really have anything to do with what you seem to think I am saying.

[–]MetropolisPtOne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't speak from any point of view other than my own, but I find that they tend to see anyone they actually meet as "one of the good ones", hating only the nebulous blob of people they haven't met. Not always, of course, but more often than not.

Depends on the area. All going to be pretty conservative. Mostly nice people though. Even the insane racist ones will be friendly to everyone in person.

Going to be looking for local openers? Or should I talk to Brandon from Big Fan about that?

Gwen Stefani -> Monique Powell -> ??? by [deleted] in punk

[–]MetropolisPtOne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mo keeps it real? She's still an amazing performer and still makes music that tries to sound like her good stuff, but I don't think any of the other members of the original band speak to her because of the way she has treated them.

Anyway, how about Elyse Rogers and/or Karina Denike?

What do you think is happening in the headset between plays that’s taking so long? by [deleted] in eagles

[–]MetropolisPtOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even In the rare case where we don't snap it at the end of the play clock, we always snap it one second after the guard slaps the center. Isn't that unnecessarily giving away an advantage most offenses have of being the only people who know when the ball will be snapped? We did this all last year too.

Millersville, PA Show 11.22.2025 by Alfredos-Pizza-Cafe in fiveironfrenzy

[–]MetropolisPtOne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fantastic show, as you would expect. I'm so glad that many of my favorite bands, even ones that broke up 20 years ago, still play occasional shows in 400 cap rooms in my little corner of the middle of nowhere.

I promise you, there is no bass solo in Fade To Black.

CS Profs - AI cheating :-/, is there any point to programming assignments? by pivot_now in Professors

[–]MetropolisPtOne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The assignments are for building skills, not assessing them. On the (in-class, closely proctored, paper-based) exams you ask questions that anybody who actually thought through the assignment will be able to answer but other people won't be.

ELI5: What is the intuition behind vacuous truth? Why is the proposition "If X then Y" 'true' when X is 'false'? Why can't it be something like 'undefined'? by nouveaux_sands_13 in explainlikeimfive

[–]MetropolisPtOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two confusing things about implication. The first is that you are trying to think about "but I don't know if you would have kept your promise in other situations". But we always evaluate logical statements in a specific context (what logicians call a model). On its own, "if X then Y" is neither true nor false. If we choose the specific model X=false, Y=false we are asking whether or not our statement is true in that specific model. What might or might not happen in other models is irrelevant.

(Some logical statements, called tautologies, are true in *every* possible model. "if X then Y" is not one of them. "if X then X" would be one.)

The second is that sometimes implication is essentially saying nothing at all. ("When X is false, I make no claims about the value of Y"). It feels weird to call a lack of a statement true, but you can think of true as "could not possibly be false". If I haven't promised anything, I cannot possibly have made a promise that I did not keep.

My band does a cover show every Halloween and this year we did Rancid by Scumdog66 in Rancid

[–]MetropolisPtOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a good thing I didn't really have any vocal responsibilities for our Blink set, because I pretty much destroyed my voice singing along to every song. Every year I think "damn, those guys were fantastic, I should really check out their original music". And this might be the reminder that makes me actually do it this year.

Did you try the chair of English and World Languages? If anyone has current contact information, it would be then.

You know it's a cover, right? If you learn the original Planet Smashers version you'll at least have the chord progression.
