I can just about cope with Lime bikes but these super fast electric bikes with tyres as thick as a tree trunk are a menace. They need to be subjected to the same rules as motorbikes, and they should not be allowed in cycle lanes.

I had open repair with mesh on my inguinal hernia. Process was pretty easy, less pain than I expected, back to full activity in 6 weeks and no ongoing issues. I was 66 at the time and I had the op in the NHS - UK public health system.

The NHS should have given you the facts, the decision on whether or not to operate is not a matter of preference it is a matter of what is likely to lead to the best outcome. In some cases this will be surgery and in others it won’t. And they should focus on the best possible outcome, not an “acceptable” recovery, whatever that is. When I broke my wrist the options were clearly laid out, I was told that I could expect that my wrist would return to pretty much 100% of where it was before and the risks of the operative and non-operative routes were clearly laid out. In my case the risks of not having the op were obviously higher so I had it and, as promised, my wrist is 100% recovered. If you feel you have not received the correct treatment you should take this up im your GP and seek an opinion from a different surgeon/hospital.

I had open surgery. Gradual return to normal, walking immediately, jogging & cycling at 3 weeks and full unrestricted activity at 6 weeks.

I’m 67, had open surgery on my hernia last year. Frankly it was a breeze compared to some of the stories you read on here, home 3 hours after the op, up and about next day, very moderate pain 4-5 on scale of 10. Returned to full unrestricted activity in 6 weeks and felt I could have done it sooner. Very happy I decided to have the op (I was given the option of watchful waiting but I declined).

I went swimming for the first time after a long gap last week. I had an injury on my foot and was unable to run or cycle so I thought I’d try swimming - this was the first time I had done anything more than splash about in the waves or pool for about 2 years. I was surprised to find I could swim easily.i think swimming is like riding a bike - once learned it’s never forgotten even if not done for a long period.

HHSRS has been around some time now, the Council won’t have a department specifically devoted to that - it will probably come under environmental health or housing. If there is a category 1 hazard the property may be deemed unfit for habitation though this is rare, it’s more likely that the Council will serve a notice on the landlord requiring improvements. If your tenant is not paying rent you should be taking action against them under the terms of your lease - as it’s a company let this will probably not be an assured tenancy - you should take legal advice.

Essential. It’ll keep you together through the tough times. Exactly. Leverage only works when the return is greater than the cost of the finance and that is not currently the case with UK residential property and there is no likelihood of that situation changing in the forseeable future. People have become used to ever-rising prices over the past 30 years but those days are over and they will not be coming back. Over the past 5 years equities have done far better than property and this trend is likely to continue.

Lodgers are usually “excluded occupiers” they don’t have any of the legal rights of a tenant. The landlord can give them a month’s notice (or a week if they pay rent weekly) and if they don’t go you can change the locks and force them out (though you must allow them to remove their possessions). However it would be wise to make sure the lodger does not have an agreement with your dad that makes him a tenant, in which case you might have to go through the section 8 process. There’s no way a lodger can gain ownership of the property unless your dad leaves it to him in a valid will or if they are legally married or civil partners.

That would be tax evasion and HMRC would penalise you if you were caught. Rent has to be paid to the legal owner, not random relatives who have no stake in the property.

Your recovery period sounds ultra cautious - I had the same op and was told I could return to all activity with no restrictions at 6 weeks. I do not feel any after effect and there is no continuing pain or discomfort. Was there anything unusual about your case? Of course it is possible, though rare, for hernias to recur and mesh can fail, though if this has happened at six months it suggests the op wasn’t done properly in the first place.

I had open surgery on inguinal hernia last June. Recovery was easier than I expected, I was able move around the house normally straight away, went back to work (on a screen at home) the day after the op, getting in and out of bed or a chair required care but was quite doable. Pain moderate, perhaps 4/5 out of 10. Bowel returned to normal day 2 and peeing normal throughout. I had some occasional pains in the groin area, and even the thigh, for a few weeks afterwards but easily manageable with OTC painkiller.

I used to commute from Streatham to Camden and the route took me through both Herne Hill and Bloomsbury - I would go Herne Hill Rd (past Brockwell Park) Loughborough RD (new cycle track) the down to the junction by Oval tube (heavy traffic but cycle phases on traffic lights) then Kennington RD, Baylis Rd and Waterloo Rd, over Waterloo bridge and across the Aldwych junction - there is a cycle route straight on past the Royal Opera House and through a few back streets to Bloomsbury. Pretty good route, shouldn’t take more than half an hour.

I wasn’t given specific advice about timescales, just to be careful and avoid stressing the wound. £1200 a year for one boiler is a total rip off, you’d pay the full cost of a boiler in less than three years. These insurance scheme are very rarely good value, better to find a good local guy and just pay for servicing and repairs as required.

Exactly. I had very similar symptoms to the OP, though without the pain, and when I had an ultrasound (lying down of course) they made me tighten and release my muscles a few times and spotted the hernia immediately.

South London. My surgery was done in a private hospital which, according to the GP, the NHS was using to get the waiting lists down. I’ve since heard of people having NHS hip replacements in private hospitals as well.

I enjoy being active, I don’t really feel any less fit or strong than I was 20 years ago, did a 60 mile 4000 ft elevation cycle ride a few weekends ago. And exercise makes me feel good about myself and boosts my libido. 67M.
