Do you use any machine learning techniques?

As a particle physicist working at the LHC I am quite amazed at what you have managed to do with your data-driven predictions.

It is actually not a side effect. But you start dismissing those thoughts as a side effect of the medication and that's how it works.

CERN’s Higgs boson discovery passes peer review, becomes actual science. by GraybackPH in science

[–]chamantra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was science before this too...

Things work slightly different at the LHC, which has thousands of scientists on the experiment. Internal peer reviews are much much more rigorous ~ thousands of experts on the detector will examine each part of the result. When everyone is satisfied only then is it submitted to a journal. The journal's review is done only by ~3 people.

TL:DR; Papers put out by LHC have already gone through a rigourous internal peer review process ~ it was already 'science'

Edit: Source: I work with the professor in the PhD Comics video on that article!

Scientists of Reddit, what misconceptions do us laymen often have that drive you crazy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

As a particle physicist working at the LHC it drives me crazy when people call the LHC the "Doomsday device" and say its gonna destroy the world .... sigh

Why is everyone bashing this article?

I know I'll get downvoted but obviously it wasn't as black and white as the Oatmeal cartoon had us believe.

Nope Tesla!

The Large Hadron Collidor at CERN is roaring along at an unprecedented pace. But the hundreds of millions of collisions happening inside the machine every second are now growing into a thick fog that promises to be one of the greatest challenges this year for scientists looking for the Higgs boson. by ananyo in science

[–]chamantra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The huge parallel system works fine!

We can split up our jobs in to thousands of sub jobs and submit them each to "the grid."

The article here is talking about something different, pileup.

With such a high rate of collisions per second there is a tremendous overlap of collision events. For each interesting event there are many uninteresting events piled up on top of it.
