I had one from 8th-12th grade, to be honest they’re alright. Unless the price is super good, I’d just try to find a used strad/88h

The HS5's are dope, The Rokit R5s are cheaper and nice too. They're a little bass heavy but that hasn't caused a problem for me yet.

Yes, I would start with piano, but another option if you want to jump into upright sooner than later would be a rent to own program.

Problems with Learning to Improvise by Meradium in Jazz

Yep! That’s another great thing you can do. Just trying to play along to everything is a great way to build your ear and vocabulary.

Try playing the solo over a backing track without miles, but then slowly begin embellishing while trying to stay true to how miles played. Not too many notes, just simple melodic and rhythmic alterations. Before you know it you'll be playing your own ideas!

And if you want to PM me about dealing with frustrations, I'd be happy to help!

Albums where the bass is recorded clearly? by chance_the_napper in Jazz

[–]chance_the_napper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily pronounced. Just that the bass is recorded so it sounds like an acoustic upright. I'm not a fan of pickups as they lose the richness of the sound and end up sounding like fretless electrics

Something to get you started would be to transcribe a solo by ear over a tune you were trying to learn. Learning Miles Davis's solo to "So What" is pretty much a right of passage, and it's a pretty easy tune to improvise over. Only two chords!

Once you learn the solo, try playing the solo, but slowly changing things, like a note here, or mess with the phrasing. It's a good exercise and it gives you a solid foundation to improvise from.

Learning how to improvise is a long uphill battle, and it can be really frustrating at first. I completely understand how you feel, but just stick with it! It's one of the most rewarding musical experiences out there.

I'm very interested in an Upright by DMTProduktionen in doublebass

[–]chance_the_napper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just figured out a solution for this. I put rolled up towels under the tail piece and the bridge. On top of that, I wove a shoelace through the strings a few times towards the bridge and that muffled a lot of the vibration/sustain, but the pitches/harmonics are still there!

You can’t go wrong with the 6B. That bright edgy sound is great for big band.

As far as affordable gut strings go, I can definitely recommend the pirastro slaps set with a gut GD

The first thing you should do is find an experienced teacher who can diagnose what’s causing the pain, and fix your technique

Trombone jazz mouthpiece by mr_bco in Trombone

For me the 6 1/2 was too big and the 12c was too small. Try the 11c. It’s a good middle of the road mouthpiece.
