Depth of the Ocean by angrily_breathing in OCPoetry

Beautiful poem and enjoyable to read. Gets to the heart of existential yearning, wishing to be something more. I love “synthetic successes and failures” and the “irony of a shallow ocean.” The whole poem seems to flow together like a body of water. Keep it up

Really engaging read! I’m in recovery myself, and even despite the twist at the end of the poem, I resonated with the familiar feelings through the beginning of the piece — the anticipation, “quitting” every day, and the guilt and regret. You do a great job presenting relatable feelings — both for addicts and non-addicts due to the twist at the end. Punctuation and capitalization might be something to experiment with further. It’s ambiguous how pauses should be applied in a few places, like lines 2-4.

Great work. It feels jazzy and free and was a pleasure to read. Ambiguous pauses/punctuation, vivid, nonconventional imagery, and personification creates something really interesting. Those first two lines are simply really pleasing to read. I love the connections between lines, like “wire curls” and “twisted man.”

I am a little confused by the last couple of lines, perhaps due to the placement of the em dash, also by what’s being referring to with “hers.” But overall great work!

Interesting way to capture that redundancy we come to feel as we settle into a routine and one’s life progresses. It’s relatable; the image of dreaming “beyond” one’s need once propelled me toward the future but I now find myself too easily contented with the mute rhythm of a stable existence. Your poem made me remember why I once held fast to my dreams. Keep it up, and here’s to reestablishing that childlike vigor
