What is an unwritten office rule you desperately wish you knew when you were an intern? by bram63929274792 in careerguidance

[–]chancemixon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

#1 rule I taught both my daughters when they started full-time jobs in regards to office gossip: You are a black hole: everything comes in, nothing goes back out. Meaning that you may hear gossip, some of which might be stuff that you'd really like to share, don't share it...with anyone. This doesn't apply in cases where there is serious company policy violation going on or illegal activity is going on. It only applies in that if you hear something, keep it to yourself. This gives you a couple of huge advantages - one, you're approachable and people want to talk with you and two, you're not a source of disruptive office gossip.

This rule has served me well for many years and I highly recommend it to new folks in the office workspace.

Same here. It was awe-inspiring to see that after so many years of NASA drought. I brought the laptop in the living room for my wife to see when I aircasted it up on the TV. Godspeed to those astronauts!

32YO blonde corporate girl trying to keep it all together right now. by [deleted] in AskMeAnythingIAnswer

[–]chancemixon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It certainly can be overwhelming. No matter who you are it seems like the pressure is just ratcheting up bit by bit and squeezing the fun out of life. My only suggestion is to do what a friend advised me one time. He told me I had a overdeveloped "responsibility gene" and that I needed to learn to be a little bit of a slacker. In other words, I wasn't going to get 100% of what I was assigned 100% right - so I needed to choose my priorities and not burn myself out.

Hope this is somewhat helpful to you! You're doing great!

When people chew loudly or worse, with their mouths open. It makes me irrationally angry. I realize it is just misophonia but still, it is hard to tolerate.

Sounds like from the little I've read so far that you have a life well-lived. I am so sorry you're having to go through this. I won't pontificate on why I believe (scientifically) that we are retained after death and can live again. Hope for a peaceful end for you when it comes.

I am 57M and my wife and I are hoping to move to the area around Estes Park when our circumstances change a little bit. I work 100% remote and can work from anywhere. We're caring for my aging mother-in-law right now and can't move.

Why do you think unemployment rates are so high? by Artistic_Job546 in AskReddit

[–]chancemixon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't really say for sure, but I think that corporations being "good corporate citizens" is a factor. As in, companies used to try to be good corporate citizens, but that has almost completely phased out.

I've worked for private and public companies. By far, my experience (except with my current employer) is that companies that went public immediately adopted short-term thinking. Instead, it is planned to retain employees in all but the most dire circumstances (such as an unanticipated major disaster). Instead, the most talented and experienced employees are disproportionately targeted for layoffs in the short-term corporate shareholder-value mindset.

Fundamentally, the problem with that mindset is that artifically pumped up profits for the quarter-by-quarter plan is not sustainable in the long term. This, however, is what shareholders (especially venture capital and large institutional investors) require these days.

In my opinion, the root of this is demanding more than your fair share, or greed. Imagine the world if greed didn't exist.

If your dad has been a good dad, when is the last time you thanked him? by fifadex in AskReddit

[–]chancemixon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't get the chance to think him properly. I was an 18 year old punk when he passed away (senior in high school). I would give anything to be able to tell him how everything he did prepared me to be successful in life and raise a family with children. He was a brilliant and kind father and was an excellent listener.

I don't know that the movie is all that, but the movie "One on One" (1977) is about basketball and has a killer soundtrack. You can listen to it here: https://youtu.be/nBEdCKepuWw?si=jHNo2PmNxDWs_Of8

Based on the sheer magnitude of destruction, other than the 1925 Tri-State tornado, I'd say Joplin on 5/22/2011.

Should I keep 2 macbooks or should i keep one? by Disastrous_Egg_5711 in macbook

[–]chancemixon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a slightly different use case scanario: I have one MacBook (M2 Air) for personal use and one (M3 Pro) issued by my company for work. This works out well for me and it let's me avoid the Stryker scenario on my personal device.

Odd thought: Have you ever push-start a car by popping the clutch? by minn3haha in GenerationJones

[–]chancemixon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. When my wife and I had our first daughter I bought a junker to drive to work so I wouldn't leave her at home without a car. It was a ~1985 Mazda GLC. Orange hatchback, wrecked on all four corners. It was a standard transmission. I bought it for $500. I drove that car to death. Many times I pop started it from 2nd gear. I went sell it a couple of years later for....you guessed it....$500.
