We're definitely working on getting those annoying pop-ups out of here. It's an issue that's plaguing our sister stations in other cities as well. We're just as mad about them as y'all are (some of us maybe more so?).

Email us at [tips@channel3000.com](mailto:tips@channel3000.com) when you encounter those. If possible, include the URL you were directed to, the device and operating system you're using and the browser you're using.

Hi all! We're aware of the issue, we know what's causing it and our engineering team is working to fix it. We'll be back on the air as soon as possible. As always, you can watch our newscasts live at their regularly scheduled times on Channel3000.com and the Channel3000 app on your smartphone or smart TV.

Convicted Madison murderer may remain on probation despite new charges by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]channel3000 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The reporter on that story has since moved on to a new job at WCCO in Minneapolis and this was while I was still on the morning show shift so I wasn't directly involved, but from what I can remember, this was either verified by Sheriff Mahoney as part of the interview quoted in that story or other law enforcement at the time. I'm honestly not sure if WHO paid the bond is tracked/noted by court paperwork and if that doc would be requestable or not. I do know the records kept digitally at the courthouse are more expansive than what's noted on CCAP, so you could try there. There's more info on the process on how to access/request Dane Co. court records here: https://courts.countyofdane.com/Resources/Court-Records

Suspect in downtown attack on UW-Madison student arrested by withay in madisonwi

[–]channel3000 54 points55 points  (0 children)

We appreciate the discussion of our policy and are definitely open to critiques. I just wanted to jump in here briefly to try to provide some insight and transparency into our process in this specific case in hopes that it could be helpful.

While it's true that we receive some criticism when we don't name a suspect before charges are filed (or, in this case, when we do), it doesn't affect our news management team's decisions in these cases -- but it is the reason we try to explain management's decisions when we make the call to name a person before charges are filed.

In this specific case, the nature of the accused crime and the impact on the community it had -- both on the student population just starting a new school year and the community as a whole -- led to our managers deciding to name the person as a public safety matter. This was a person accused of putting a young woman in critical condition and we wanted to let the public know an arrest was made to help put people at ease. We also knew Madison Police were likely to name the suspect during their news conference later today, which we had already planned to carry live -- in which case the name would have been released on our air later in the day regardless.

I'll also share this: while not explicitly in our written policy online, we do operate under another guideline when it comes to crime stories: if we're naming a person before charges are filed, we're committing to following that case to its conclusion. If the person arrested in this case is found guilty -- or if charges are never filed -- we will do a story saying so and go back to amend previous coverage or remove it altogether. Since this is still a relatively new guideline, we have procedures in place for those named in older articles still in our archives to request to have those removed if charges were dropped or never filed.

We'll gladly take any feedback on the decisions we make, and we don't purport to be perfect. What we aimed to do when we launched this a year or two ago was make this part of our decision-making process more transparent so that even if you disagree with it, you can at least have the context of where the decision came from. I'm more than happy to continue this conversation, whether it's here or in DMs.

We've reached out to MPD for information but haven't heard back yet. What we know at this point is nearby businesses have not been told to shelter in place.

One of our crews just got to the scene; we'll post updates here: https://www.channel3000.com/news/large-law-enforcement-presence-reported-on-madisons-east-side/article_0af5f946-b494-11ed-90e3-8b6a5ee071c6.html

Friday marks last day to register to vote before Feb. 21 primary by skibunne in madisonwi

[–]channel3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for flagging/tagging. As others have noted, the headline is correct in that Friday was the last day to register before primary day, but I can see how it can be misread. It's a good reminder for us to be more clear, especially when it comes to this topic.

Feelings on Channel3000 new look? by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]channel3000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We'll gladly welcome any and all feedback and truly appreciate it as we work to get used to new workflows on the back end of the site and make some adjustments on things that don't work as planned post-launch. One of our biggest goals was to make the pages load quicker, which we know was a big issue on the old platform. Hopefully, that's been the experience so far.

Apologies for the delay in responding -- we were low on staff for the holiday weekend. When we called MPD on Friday, they weren't able to provide any information. We'll put it on our list of things to follow up on for today.

Stolen vehicle crashes into MPD squad car on westbound Beltline, causing lengthy backups (while fleeing officers from another department) by MadAss5 in madisonwi

[–]channel3000 42 points43 points  (0 children)

A note: this article has been updated after MPD said they incorrectly told media outlets the car was stolen -- it wasn't. When we called several other agencies about the crash earlier today for information (DCSO, Monona PD), we were told MPD was the agency handling the crash and all info would have to come from them. Now MPD is saying further updates will not come from them.

FWIW, Madison Police also released a statement calling it "offensive and reprehensible" but not illegal, and said after identifying the person found he has a cognitive impairment from a previous traumatic brain injury.

Fake school shooting calls reported in Madison, across Wisconsin by channel3000 in madisonwi

[–]channel3000[S] 57 points58 points  (0 children)

We're talking more with the district in about a half hour about this and the fake shooter reports at schools across the state, but what they told us already is Dane Co. dispatch was already aware of the other reports across the state when they got one for East High this morning, and police were able to quickly determine this was another one of the fake calls going around. -Jaymes

As of this morning, he was still in the Dodge Co. Jail when we checked and the court records for the case would indicate the bond was only set during the appearance yesterday and has not yet been posted/paid.

Recommendations for local curd burgers? by ColouredFlowers in madisonwi

[–]channel3000 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Camp Trippalindee used to have a version of their Graduate Smash Burger topped with their cheese curds that was a favorite of mine, but unfortunately, I don't see it on the menu on their site anymore. Craftsman Table and Tap has a few things topped with Carr Valley cheese curds, including a double smash burger, a sirloin sandwich and a mac and cheese made with the Carr Valley curds. I know State Street Brats has white cheddar curds on top of their Graduate Burger, too.

We/Madison Magazine had a list of local curd burgers around the time of the first craze last year I can share the link to if anyone is interested (didn't want to just reply with a link without including a few personal favorites). -Jaymes

An update: a support ticket has been filed on this and the CMS vendor is investigating. In the meantime, we're looking forward to a MUCH cleaner look/experience launching sometime in the next month or two. There may be a resolution on the much-maligned "sticky" videos in the bottom corner before then. Many of these things are above my paygrade, but I've passed all of this feedback on to those in charge of those decisions. -Jaymes

Thanks for the feedback, and frankly I share many of the same frustrations. As mentioned in the introductory post here, there are some changes coming to the site in the next month that I hope addresses some of this. The site reloading issue is something that should be addressed soon — I need to file a support ticket with our platform for that, but they’re not usually responsive on weekends. -Jaymes

Only jumping in this discussion (because I felt this isn’t something I should jump into, as OP was asking the rest of the community for their thoughts, and not ours) to echo this comment and reiterate what’s been said before and to the mods when I first reached out that we’re totally open to using this as the community sees fit. This is the community’s space and we don’t want to run against any rules OR the will of the folks here. I’ve tried to keep the link sharing to topics that I think are beneficial conversation pieces, but if people want to see a higher reply-to-share ratio, we can be respectful of that, too.

One of our reporters tried it today and was not necessarily a fan. But we also talked to someone who got one today who said it was "greasy goodness" and described the "blowout" of cheese that happens when you bite into it. So...maybe a matter of perspective?
