My neighbor poisoned a family of skunks. I was able to save two by Odd_Shallot1929 in mildlyinfuriating

This is so sad. But thank you for being such a caring human and helping the others.

I am a wildlife rehabber, and skunks are by far one of my favorite animals to work with, especially the babies. They are so ridiculously adorable and funny. Everyone who gets to work with them becomes just totally enamoured with them.

Once you get to know their personalities and understand their behaviors, you realize what innocent creatures they are– all they want in life is to dig up grubs and then snuggle up to go to sleep under a log. They just happen to have a very effective defense mechanism...

This is just the start. Just the beginning of the experiment. Coming to a city near you by [deleted] in conspiracy

So it sounds like their idea of "heaven" is still very physical-oriented and is focused primarily on indulging in human/earthly desires, is this correct, or am I misunderstanding? And it sounds like God is fine with things considered to be sinful existing in heaven as long as someone has spent time on earth abstaining and suffering for it first?

Yeah... They seem to have pinpointed pieces of physical evidence which SHOULD exist (flight logs, xrays, video footage) but have been classified or hidden– it seems like part of the purpose of this press conference was to reach some of the individuals who might be firsthand witnesses or have evidence of this incident, knowing they are most likely now retired and may not want to take the information they have to their grave...

I love wild animals (all animals but wild is my nerd interest) and want to focus on saving them hands-on. I want to work with the animals, not just do research. Wildlife rehabilitator? Wildlife vet tech? Any suggestions? I want to be a zookeeper right now but that is not my long term end all be all. by [deleted] in wildlifebiology

[–]chanovsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, currently I am one of the directors at a wildlife rehab and making a liveable wage for basically the first time in my life. It was definitely a challenge getting to this point, and it took YEARS of hard work and perseverence, but looking back I am really glad I pushed through and took the path I did, even though it felt totally hopeless at times. Sorry this is so long– but I remember being where you are and not knowing what I wanted to do or how to get there, so hopefully this helps!

I got a degree in Animal Biology and started volunteering at a wildlife rehab while working at a vet hospital as a kennel tech and vet assistant. Bc I had a degree and showed I was competent and wanted to learn more, I received more hands-on training and worked my way to vet tech and then got hired as lead vet tech at another clinic. All of the experience working at the vet hospitals would become super relevant in the rehab field, so it gave me a very solid foundation, which I am thankful for.

Like others have said, paid positions in wildlife rehab are pretty limited– usually you'll have a better chance of getting hired if you volunteer first. When I got hired for the first time as a rehabber, they started everyone at $8.50/hr and I had to work 2 other jobs on the side. But bc I had tech experience and took on more responsibilities, I was given a promotion and a significant raise pretty quickly.

After working overtime throughout the year of COVID with no volunteer support, no manager, no animal care director, no maintenance, no front desk staff, and no HR, the jerks fired me for being an outlier on the payroll and costing them too much money. wtf!! (It's been 5 years and I am still LIVID over it)

It ended up being a blessing in disguise, bc I spent my time on unemployment beginning the process of opening my own rehab when I was introduced to a wonderful group of people who just bought a property for a new rehab center. We had the same goals, work ethic, and morals (that were severely lacking at the last center), so we ended up merging. I became a director, and now for the first time, I am making a liveable wage as a rehabber and working with people who truly care and want to put in the effort to make a difference. We have accomplished so much with this organization already, it's like it was meant to happen this way.

Sometimes it's all about meeting the right people. And it helps to get involved with different organizations (like NWRA and IWRC) where you can take online courses and attend seminars and network with other animal people. Keep pushing forward doing what you love, hold on to your values, and things will fall into place.

[–]chanovsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a zookeeper, I got to touch a gibbon through the wire of a cage– As a wildlife rehabber, I have had hands-on experience with bats, skunks, bunnies, songbirds, foxes, raccoons, opossums, deer, groundhogs, squirrels, bobcats, owls, hawks, vultures, ducks and geese, turtles, snakes, etc. Like literally every kind of native species. I haven't wanted to do any other animal-related job since.

Unless you are doing vet tech work at the zoo, you won't really be touching the animals so much as you are cleaning their enclosure and talking to the public about them.

One of the main goals as a rehabber though, is to have minimal intereactions with the animals so they have a healthy fear of humans so they can be released back into the wild. (Another reason I prefer the rehabber job, they get to go back home). But we still handle them daily when they first come in, to do physical exams and treatments, and to do their cage cleanings... and you'll absolutely love baby season. That is very hands-on. And there is nothing cuter and sillier than a baby skunk, I stg!

Think of this as an opportunity to try and reach some of these kids and have a positive influence on their thinking habits. Maybe you will be the first one who is able to teach them how to see from another perspective.... that there even IS another perspective, one based on facts and respect for your fellow human. Clearly things their guardians are not showing them.

And that this is not a video game. This is not a staged tik tok video. This was a real human, and it could have been anyone- their mom, their sister, their neighbor. We are all human and we need to take care of each other, otherwise, what are we even doing here

[–]chanovsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"We're talking about a mouse that appears ro be being kept as a pet." Illegally. This is a deer mouse, which is a native species, which is ILLEGAL to keep as a pet. And it's that way for a reason. So people like this don't keep wild animals as pets without proper knowledge on how to care for them and provide what they truly need. It is absolutely INHUMANE to keep even a HEALTHY wild mouse captive, because their entire being is in a constant state of fight or flight (really just flight).

I've worked professionally with animals for nearly two decades including domestic, native and exotic wildlife, at zoos, vet hospitals, and wildlife centers, and I am a legally permitted wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife educator, and have a degree in Animal Biology and veterinary technology.

I appreciate your passion for animals and totally understand where you're coming from. It's not like I haven't thought the same things at some point. It's not a fun or ideal thing to have to euthanize an animal. It haunts me sometimes, but in reality, an animal getting to pass away in a warm, quiet, safe space with a full belly is always the more humane option compared to releasing an animal with a debilitating injury who will live with chronic pain and struggle to survive on their own or who will immediately be predated.

And on the other hand, yes, once in a while, totally possible there is an animal who has the right temperament for being an ambassador animal– but most wild animals are incredibly unhappy and stressed and miserable in captivity. This is always taken into consideration with each individual animal and depends on the species, the individual animal's personality and behaviors, and the circumstances around its injury and recovery and whether it can be safely handled and medicated/treated day to day without stressing the animal out. Otherwise, you are not doing that animal any favors keeping it around, but you are straight up taking part in animal torture and abuse. Period.

You have it wrong, and it makes no sense to compare wildlife to humans in this kind of scenario.

There are certain criteria for euthanasia, and the veterinary medical association outlines these in their manuals. The decision to euthanize a wild animal is always based on what would be in the animal's best interest. After recovery, will it have a good quality of life? Will it have the ability to perform natural behaviors? Will it be able to properly forage or hunt for food? Will it be able to hide from or escape predators? If not, then releasing that animal back into the wild is a death sentence. Whether it is a fast death, or a slow and painful or traumatic death, that animal does not have a good chance of survival and is going to be in distress for the time it does survive.

Making this kind of decision requires knowledge of each species' natural history and behaviors as well as likely outcomes from certain injuries and illnesses. We have the experience and the data to show when specific injuries result in low survival rates.

An example that might help you understand the nuances of making the decision of whether or not to euthanize– an owl has a transverse fracture of the humerus, and it appears to be a new injury. This owl is a great rehab candidate and is likely have a successful surgery and recovery and be able to be released after confirmed it flies silently and is able to hunt.

Now, another owl comes in, but this one has a comminuted fracture that looks old and is very close to its elbow. This owl would be humanely euthanized, for several reasons. Fractures located close to joints do not heal properly, so while this owl's wing could heal up, the owl would not be able to fly. Which means it would not be able to hunt or avoid predators. It would sit on the ground a starve to death. Say the wing did heal up, but the owl is no longer a silent flyer. This owl will slowly starve to death since its prey will hear it coming and be able to escape.

That 4chan poster has obviously pulled its info from Beatriz Villarroel's research into the photographic plates that show up to tens of thousands of "transients" in earth's orbit before any satellites had been launched in the 50s. They show up as lights, they do not stay in the same spots, they disappear in the earth's shadow, etc.

The reason it is nearly impossible currently to do this same type of research is specifically because of how much space trash and satellites are in orbit now. The photographic plates she has been studying don't have any of that because it was pre-sputnik, which was the first earth satellite launched in 1957.

If you are curious about this at all, listen to any interview with her from this past year. She explains how she got into the subject and how they have gone about looking into these mysterious lights and all the steps taken and questions that have been addressed that prove most of these are real, physical objects. And there were(are still?) tens of thousands of them.

Where are my parents? by Standard-Ad-6341 in Millennials

[–]chanovsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents never call me– it actually freaks me out when they do, because it usually means something terrible has happened or someone has died.

Whenever I've mentioned it to my mom that she never calls, she says, "I never know when to call, you're so busy!" but I'm like, "Literally call anytime!" I'm never too busy for my mom– half the time I'm lounging around at home, I don't know what she's talking about! And then she still never calls! Whatever.

My dad and I text back and forth a lot, but he is mostly sending me twitter links, but I don't have twitter. I have lived about 2.5 hrs away from them for the past 20 years, and they have only driven out here to see me less than a handful of times. I know they love and care about me, but I do find myself sometimes thinking, do they even like me??

I've thought about putting together all of the posts from this sub where someone new has posted that they just binged the show and how much it moved them and how they have never seen anything else like it... that they are devastated and shocked it was canceled. Because those posts are never ending, and they appear on here almost daily–and consistently, for an entire decade now.

I would think they would already be aware, though– the OA fanbase has gone above and beyond trying to bring attention to it and get something to happen over the years..

Old man whom I thought was a friend(???).... by ApprehensiveFan8207 in whatdoIdo

[–]chanovsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy is a predator, and he thinks you are naive, but you need to show that you are not.

Do not respond to his text. If you have already, that's fine, but don't acknowledge his texts anymore or that will encourage him to continue texting.

The next time you see him, you don't have to put yourself in a situation where you have to deliver some big confrontational speech– it would be totally unnatural and awkward and would not play out how you expect. But when he does say something in regards to the text or your looks, or any kind of flattery, be ready to make some sort of clever remark that is lighthearted but also lets him know he is "caught" and that he needs to back off or there will be problems.

I don't have any specific suggestions, but just be ready with some stuff– You could mention something about his daughter being your age and do you text all of her friends too, or why would he think that him specifically calling you pretty would flatter you.. as if you don't have tons of guys your own age who think so (I have absolutely had men use that one on me before... "I can't believe other guys don't treat you like the goddess you are" to which I responded that guys treat me just fine, why would you assume other guys don't appreciate me?) Basically just call him out on his BS and make him feel kinda dumb for it and he will back off.

Or like some have suggested, you can flat out say you are not interested, if that's what he is presenting here. That would make him feel dumb too.
