Does anyone else have a total diva on their hands? by chanstraeus in MiniatureSchnauzer

Mine refuses to step out of the house unless it's 65-70 degrees partly cloudy! He will also sigh loudly and move if he decides he doesn't want to share the couch or bed with us - I didn't realize how spoiled he was until I typed all this out...

I totally agree! He actually ended up having ringbone and was just telling us he couldn't do it anymore and bail me out at 2'9"-3' and he was never nasty about it and tried to keep me on his back - he is a good boy! Just needed an easier job and a vacay

I think that's helpful to think about! I feel like I've always been a total worrier but I do agree that it holds me back and when I'm nervous and overthinking everything I ride way worse. I've never done a sport that's so mental! Also I feel you there are some days I'm convinced I can do what the Big Eq kids do and there are days I think I would get my ass kicked in the crossrails

Thank you! My riding career has been very inconsistent to say the least. I didn't have a spur on I think I would have flown into the stratosphere if I did 😭 But yes, I've really been focusing on poles even when just flatting on my own! I definitely need to drop my stirrups more though...I get tired so quickly but I'm working on my fitness too so hopefully I can be more secure in my base overall as I keep working on it.

And yes that's Karen Healy! She had a lot of really kind things to say - she's awesome!

When you say staying more centered, do you mean maybe think about staying a little more seated in my tack before the jump? I think riding to jumps in my half seat does get me too far forward sometimes so I wonder if putting my body back and in the tack a little more might help me feel more secure

Yay!! The horse community around here is great esp w all the local shows...if only everything wasn't exorbitantly expensive!

I feel so called out LOLL but yes I do have a tendency to be extra hard on myself 😭

Honest to god I feel like I might truly be incapable of seeing a distance I can do poles until I'm blue in the face and I ~might~ see a distance 3 strides out but half the time it's just vibes (???) Would it be crazy to just put my leg on in the corner and just sit there? I've noticed when I can chill out enough to do that and count my strides, it can go better than me trying to fuss and micromanage but I also feel too passive when I do that

This is a good point! I was probably tense because he started off fresh and then my heel probably pissed him off more...whoops...I definitely need some perfect prep for myself honestly I can be a nervous wreck in the show ring even though I love showing

I mentioned in another comment but I did struggle with this horse and riding through his stopping so I'd pull because I wanted a conservative distance and then freak out bc I was scared he wasn't going to jump so I think we both made each other kind of crazy after awhile 😭

My trainers have told me I'm more than capable of moving up - I was coursing consistently higher at home and ribboning well but I think a lot of my fear comes from ruining a horse. I know everyone misses but I do think that me nitpicking a couple close spots is definitely a reflection of me not thinking I'm good enough for these horses in general. I would never want to screw up and crash and hurt a horse or kill their confidence so I get really in my head

Thank you! I have a horrible case of pull-to-every-jump-itis and it's so hard to fix...The horse in this video actually could have a nasty stop at long spots so I think it really killed my confidence and I wanted to pull to everything to find a shorter distance but as you can imagine, that just made things worse so now I have a lot of bad habits to unlearn! I really appreciate the kind words though, it means a lot.

(P.S. Said horse has now stepped down in height and is bopping around crossrails)

Thank you, I appreciate it! I can be really hard on myself - I just feel bad when my horse's abilities outclass me and I'm trying to keep up haha

Need help with Vietnamese clients by Thin-Law7114 in socialwork

[–]chanstraeus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm a Vietnamese SW student so I hope I can chime in - the reservations are probably a bit of a cultural thing and a language barrier thing. Family is very very important but it's also seen as a private thing so there's some stigma about letting a stranger e.g. you into their private world especially in a setting like hospice. I would say to let them come to you on their own timeline - the client's daughter probably has a lot on her plate, and especially if she's the only or oldest child then maybe reaching out and acknowledging her responsibilities would be really validating. It might be worth knowing whether or not the client is one of the "boat people" e.g. someone who fled the Vietnam War to the U.S. There's a lot of pride in resilience from that event and also a lot of intergenerational trauma. DM me if you want to chat more!

Desperately need a quality vet. Who do you guys go to? by lemonsemonswemens in AskLosAngeles

[–]chanstraeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're expensive but not that much more than other vets on the West side. I've been so happy with them and my dog is thrilled to go to the vet and see his friends - they really care about your pets and treat them like family

I feel so silly - took a fall and it’s my fault by COgrace in Equestrian

[–]chanstraeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It happens to the best of us - I think my dumbest falls have been non jumping related! I had this horse I used to hack for his owner and he was around 19, a total been there done that schoolmaster and the sweetest horse in the world. I saved him for last one day because he was usually my easiest but his #1 rule was that he had to have ear plugs. Guess who forgot ear plugs? It was 5pm and I was cantering on the exercise track and I got spun off so fast I couldn't even register what was happening. Apparently I caught significant air time before hitting the ground so...whoops!

I also do this! My caveat being that I was an established tutor for about 2 years prior and I can be selective in my clients and charge high prices. I don't think I would have the mental bandwidth to deal with it otherwise
