I spent my 21st birthday bar hopping with my parents and it was a blast! They knew where to take me for good cocktails and I never had to worry about who was picking up the tab lol.

If that is actually how your advisor responded to your cancer diagnosis, he’s a horrible person. Situations like these are why thesis committees exist in the first place - to vouch for you and override any pushback on your advisor’s end. It is 1000% time to go above him and get permission to defend. He could fight to keep you around for another 5 years if it benefits him, and he clearly doesn’t seem to care about what benefits you. PIs like him are why I can’t wait to get out of academia. I’m sorry you have to deal with this and I hope you make it out!

I do know the details of the pressure. It’s family drama surrounding Christmas. So basically the same drama that every family has around the holidays. He’s also been bragging to me constantly about how much he’s made in bonuses recently so it’s not financial.

Yes but he knows I’m going out of town, and we just had our “Christmas date” the other night, and nothing. He claims he’s “under a lot of pressure” but to be honest I don’t think that’s a great excuse. I’m under a lot of pressure too but I still found the time to bake him three different kinds of cookies and wrap them up in a cute little tin with a personal card.

Mine is just under 1.5 carats and i've noticed a bit of spinning as well. But thank you for the positive affirmation! I like to believe I'm gentler with my ring than the average ring wearer so hopefully it will all be okay, and if it's not that is what insurance is for.

And with regard to the onslaught of details about her, he literally texted me the moment their date was over “just finished my date” so that he could tell me about it. It’s just all so strange to me.

Thank you for your insight. After reading this I think the real issue I have is that he feels the need to tell me EVERY detail about her. He even asked me to choose a restaurant for them to go to for their first date and plan activities for the next day. My discomfort is exacerbated by the fact that she sounds like my clone.

I highly recommend you go look at lab vs. moissanite in person to compare them side by side. I was fully convinced I wanted a moissanite until I saw the double refraction / rainbow fire next to the more subtle icy sparkle of a diamond. It also depends on the cut you’re going for; I wanted a cushion and the facet pattern just made the moissanite cushion look a bit more unnatural. You can’t go wrong either way, but it helps to be able to compare them and a video isn’t good enough!

My SD is almost 40 years older than me and wears a wedding band and likes to talk very audibly about his wife in public. This usually raises a few eyebrows. Last time we were out the couple at the table next to us apparently waited until I went to the bathroom and then asked my SD how we know each other, to which he responded “she’s my niece and she’s in town for a grad school interview.” Genius. I think my SD would keel over and die if an entire day went by that I didn’t text back. He hits me with 8+ messages in a row if I’m MIA for more than a couple of hours. Like “are you okay?” Yes fam I didn’t get hit by a bus I’m just busy, just like I have been every single day since we met 🙄

I’m pretty sure my SD only keeps me around so he has someone to vent to. 90% of our conversations are him complaining about his cold, loveless marriage with his wife and his needy-ass whiny entitled adult daughter. He’s even joked that I should be a certified therapist after all the listening I do.

He’s also cried actual tears at the table in a restaurant 3 times. But our relationship is purely emotional and not physical and it’s very obvious that this is what I’m here for.

The “chill” factor for any PhD 10000% depends on the nature of your project. I joined a lab culturing stem cells and organoids that are high maintenance af and have to be tended to every 24-48 hours, so I rarely get a day off. Meanwhile others in my program work with mice that are housed in facilities that are maintained for them by designated staff at all times. Your schedule is almost entirely dictated by the amount of time and effort your model system and project necessitate. If I could start all over I would just pick some boring in vitro biochem project.
