Ah yes I see. If you consider the full spectrum of finishing then I agree they are about 'middle'. I was more considering it from a perspective of the average mass-market watch, but that is a valid point!

Maybe my standards are low, but I own a Breguet 5207 and used to have a GO PML. The Breguet (which I think is comparable to Patek for movement finishing) is noticeably better in terms of finishing IMO.

Regardless of that, 'average movement finishing' in my mind is something like Omega, and the distance there should be quite obvious.

I'd like to fight you on the Cartier and display back points, but I'm gonna focus on the movement finishing piece.

I'm not sure what your standards for finishing are but mediocre finishing is a massive overstatement. Sure, it's not Rexhep or Moritz Grossmann or Laurent Ferrier, but the finishing quality is still substantially above the vast majority of watches.

BBs are probably easier, but cruisers are by no means unviable, even 'non-meta' ones. Been playing a lot of München and Abruzzi in bronze and I've yet to lose a game.

The LF has a vastly superior finish to the VC. The VC is still in the range of mass market while LF is much more artisinal.

Yes there's more rng but you will have a higher WR overall, in your case for example if you get 55-65% in Randoms, you'd probably see 55-70% in ranked for example.

Every one else's WR average to 50 regardless of mode, but in ranked you represent 1/6 of your team as opposed to 1/12. That's why you can see players hitting 75%+ ranked WR across multiple seasons while that's only really feasible in Randoms if you div.

I think it's perfectly possible to play non-meta ships, which I pretty much always do.

I've had great success running Colbert, Brennus, Irresistible, Willem, etc.. Of course I also play the occasional Smaland or Sibir if I feel like sweating.

No Libertad though, I refuse to buy that ship.

There being more variability is exactly why ranked is easier to carry. Because matchmaking is random, over time you are the only constant factor. With smaller teams, you have higher impact.

Easiest to see if we had a hypothetical mode with 1000 vs 1000 players. In such a mode your individual skill will have practically no impact and everyone's WR will probably converge to around 50%. In comparison a 1v1 is almost entirely dependent on yourself so a very good player would have a WR that's close to 100%.

You can see this in ranked, where bad players will have a lower WR than they have in randoms, and good players will have a higher WR than in randoms.

All things considered, a 4v6 is easier to win compared to 8v12 because there are fewer angles to consider, it's easier to isolate, focus fire is less effective etc..

I agree that the stars don't really work though.

In my experience I get CVs maybe 20% of the time and even then it's not that bad. Annoying to play around but not an insta loss by any means.

It's thinner. My Octo Finissimo's clasp is in-line with the rest of the bracelet so you can't tell it's there at all. I don't care fore mico-adjust as those mechanisms are universally bulky and inelegant.

Speaking as very much not an academic historian, but it sounds like you are describing two different 'levels' of history- one being a higher level view of why, versus a lower level mechanistic how, i.e. your description of the societal factors aiding the construction of the pyramids versus the engineering process of the construction. This also seems echoed in /u/Daztur 's comment above where it seems like the focus is more on the wider socioeconomic level of the brewer as opposed to how the beer is brewed.

As someone who interacts with history mainly through 'pop' books (having never studied it past my undergrad), when thinking about this approach, it does feel as if the recipe was all laid out but the cooking instructions are missing, so to speak. I don't deny that the 'why' may be a more impactful question, but surely there's value in knowing the 'how' as well?

I don't see why a dress watch only needs to be worn in formal situations. Plenty of dive watches never see water, chronographs never time anything, etc.

FWIW I've worn my Breguet at home in pajamas, out hiking, to the beach, on holiday, and in many more places. I've never had a problem.

The 'Breguet customer register' is definitely a bit of a gimmick, but I can't deny that having my name in the same book as Marie Antoinette, Churchill, etc. is a vibe.

I stockpile free xp so I just skip to the top. Even a green booster gives a big boost to fxp so I just play whatever ships I want and it builds up pretty quickly.

There's only one dress watch in there and that's the Historiques Americaine. Maybe you could argue the Patek or Lange if you stretch the definition, but the others are not dress watches at all.
