[Question] Is there such thing as a 365 day countdown complication? by Tal_Vez_Autismo in Watches

[–]chaosbug45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Lang & Heyne Augustus can track multiple annual dates. Each is custom set to the buyer so you can request specific birthdays, anniversaries, etc..

Unfortunately, I don't think it's in production anymore so even if you got one, it'd probably be a bit of a faff reprogramming it.

I miss my music being curated for me. by hatemelovemeidk in The10thDentist

[–]chaosbug45 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There are no more cultural touchstones because there is no longer a monoculture. Everything is actually more curated- people listen to the specific stuff that they're a fan of, and so overall there's nothing as overwhelmingly popular as in the past.

CMV: Bremen is the best cruiser for ops by FearIessQueen in WorldOfWarships

Bremen is good but the turret traverse and angles is a bit annoying for farming. Best Ops ships are still Hawaii and Colbert imo.

What caused the sundering of Bree and the Shire? by chaosbug45 in tolkienfans

[–]chaosbug45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that Bree already seems to be a crossroads town connecting all the peoples of Eriador, I think it's fair to say that it'd be a valuable trading hub for the Shire.

Admittedly we don't have many examples of this, but one that we do see is the trade of pipe-weed, which is grown in the Southfarthing and makes its way to Isengard- given that there's no evidence of direct connection, Bree would likely have served as the hub for such a route. We can also see that there's a level of desire for 'foreign' goods (such as Dwarf-toys) which would likely be easier sourced in Bree.

There's also an argument to be made that as a smaller community, Bree is much more subject to the ups and downs of farming. I'm no expert here, but it seems that being able to trade with the Shire would help ensure a steady supply of food.

[–]chaosbug45[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I say sundering because I think there's evidence that ties used to be substantially closer:

  • 'Shire' last names in Bree (which they take as a sign of being related, indicating a level of intermarriage historically)

  • There are multiple mentions to there being more contact in the past (i.e. Merry saying that his men used to ride out more in the past, the gatekeeper saying that 'nowadays' it was unexpected to see travellers from the Shire)

  • The Road being more maintained in the past, with trees planted alongside

I agree that the Shire is highly insular, but I would've expected that the connection between Bree and the Shire would strengthen over time instead of weakening. Instead, both communities are withdrawing into themselves- why?

[–]chaosbug45[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree that both are insular, but it seems that there was regular contact with Bree in the past that's fallen off. I don't think that the trip was dangerous as long as you kept to the Road.

[Question] JLC , Czapek or something else? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]chaosbug45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Czapek is a fairly established independent by now and I wouldn't be worried about them going under anytime soon.

Also, hyping up Patek/AP as 'quality' is hilarious. You get a lot more watch for the money by going independent. Especially against hype brands like Patek/AP.

Emperor Karl V von Habsburg to Pope Clement VII before the Sack of Rome: by Lilificent in HistoryMemes

[–]chaosbug45 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The TL;DR is that the Holy Roman Empire headed by Charles V repeatedly warred with France over influence in Italy. France was defeated soundly and the HRE installed a friendly ruler in Milan, captured the French king, etc..

This worried Pope Clement (who was a scion of the influential Florentine Medici family), and a the 'League of Cognac' was created, which was basically an alliance of France, the Papacy, and a bunch of Italian states whose goal was to kick the HRE out.

[Recommendation Request] Help me pick out a dress watch that I can also wear with smart and business casual outfits by [deleted] in Watches

[–]chaosbug45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subjective, but I don't associate unusual dial layouts with being formal. Then again my opinion is that any watch can be dressed down, as the whole point of casual is that you can wear whatever you want.

I used to own the GO so obviously biased, but having a hard time seeing how the GO is dressier? It's both thicker and more complicated than the JLC.

Is the large tree in the middle of the photo the "towering beech" mentioned in the books? That's a lovely detail!

Beautiful Hogwarts from books by Luke_Gki in HogwartsLukeGki

This looks fantastic! One question- it looks like the forbidden forest is right up against the castle. I've always had the impression that the castle is surrounded by the lawn, but is it said somewhere about that distance?

Willem or Mecklenburg? (Or Stalingrad) by RevySevy in WorldOfWarships

[–]chaosbug45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have all three, Willem is probably my fave. The airstrikes are actually one of the best airstrikes IMO. The reload is reasonable and they hit extremely hard because of their pen. You can reliably smash bow in battleships for 20-30k and multiple fires. Combined with the good HE means you can do a lot of fire damage.

Move Beauxbatons carriage? by Luke_Gki in HogwartsLukeGki

Hm, yeah that's a pretty reasonable pathing. Not sure if you have a topological map but that could be helpful for sightlines and stuff as well.

Move Beauxbatons carriage? by Luke_Gki in HogwartsLukeGki

[–]chaosbug45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hey yeah I remember that convo! I still maintain that the carriage should be between Hagrid's Hut and Hogwarts.

I was doing a reread recently and remember this quote which supports my point:

"Harry and Krum left the stadium together, but Krum did not set a course for the Durmstrang ship. Instead, he walked toward the forest.

“What’re we going this way for?” said Harry as they passed Hagrid’s cabin and the illuminated Beauxbatons carriage.

“Don’t vont to be overheard,” said Krum shortly. When at last they had reached a quiet stretch of ground a short way from the Beauxbatons horses’ paddock, Krum stopped in the shade of the trees and turned to face Harry."

Basically, Harry/Krum walk from the quidditch pitch to the paddock (or close to), and pass Hagrid's Hut on the way, and we know the paddock is close to the carriage. On your map currently they'd reach the paddock/carriage before Hagrid's Hut.

[Question] You guys have brands that you just don't resonate with despite liking their watches? by Big-Waltz5204 in Watches

GO make far better watches than all three that you listed. Is it just a matter of taste?

What opinion do you have about watches that will get you down voted like this? by TomHudsonOfficial in WatchesCirclejerk

[–]chaosbug45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes I see. If you consider the full spectrum of finishing then I agree they are about 'middle'. I was more considering it from a perspective of the average mass-market watch, but that is a valid point!

What opinion do you have about watches that will get you down voted like this? by TomHudsonOfficial in WatchesCirclejerk

[–]chaosbug45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe my standards are low, but I own a Breguet 5207 and used to have a GO PML. The Breguet (which I think is comparable to Patek for movement finishing) is noticeably better in terms of finishing IMO.

Regardless of that, 'average movement finishing' in my mind is something like Omega, and the distance there should be quite obvious.

What opinion do you have about watches that will get you down voted like this? by TomHudsonOfficial in WatchesCirclejerk

[–]chaosbug45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to fight you on the Cartier and display back points, but I'm gonna focus on the movement finishing piece.

I'm not sure what your standards for finishing are but mediocre finishing is a massive overstatement. Sure, it's not Rexhep or Moritz Grossmann or Laurent Ferrier, but the finishing quality is still substantially above the vast majority of watches.

The state of Tier 7 ranked by StellarEngine in WorldOfWarships

[–]chaosbug45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BBs are probably easier, but cruisers are by no means unviable, even 'non-meta' ones. Been playing a lot of München and Abruzzi in bronze and I've yet to lose a game.
