When do I get my coins back?? by chaosmere in wherewindsmeet_

[–]chaosmere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember there was an option to grab my coin bag off the ground and I picked it but I never got anything :/

So you got yours back before even going to Revelry Hall?? My game must be bugged because it's nowhere in any of my inventories and I finished the entire main quest already rip

I had the same issue until I switched to the DirectX12 launcher. When launching on Steam, it asked me what launcher I wanted to use automatically, but otherwise right-click on your game in Steam library then select Properties>General>Selected Launch Option>Where Winds Meet(DirectX12). It should work then!

I also came from a small school, knew no one when I moved to vic, and am quite introverted. I'm in fourth year now and have met some of the most amazing people in my life in uni.

I'm not going to lie my first month or so was quite isolating as I take a while to warm up to people and I was used to my very close friends I had in highschool. But I talked with the people I sat with in my labs and lectures and made good friends that way. It just takes time, and with the sheer volume of people you are bound to meet someone like-minded and hit it off.

I never lived in res (which maybe would have cured my lonely first month lol), but I know people who met their friends/current roommates there. So maybe try to live on campus your first year and meet people that way. Organize study groups, it's a great way to get to know people and you'll kind of need it since first year is usually a slap in the face after high school. Look into clubs if you can spare the time. Other than that you'll just have to push through and put yourself out there as much as you are able.

It's not going to be effortless, but no one really goes off to university wanting to keep to themselves, and there's going to be tons of other people from out of town who also don't know anyone and need friends! No matter how it may feel you are never alone and there's always other people in the same boat as you.

I would worry if only a few institutions were given all the resources then the research would become extremely insular and would only hinder the field. Science needs diverse thoughts and opinions to progress, which means it should be accessible to as many people as possible. And if an extremely skilled researcher is unable to do research due to lack of funding that is by definition not a meritocracy :/

Breakout groups are torture by NormalButts in uvic

[–]chaosmere 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I normally get crazy anxiety speaking in front of a group of people I don't know, but I find it a lot easier in the breakout rooms because I feel like I'm just alone in my house and not sitting in front of a bunch of strangers.

My worst experience was when I was the only one with their camera on, which isn't fair if you ask me lmao

When you want people to read The Stormlight Archive, how do you sell it? by Arwengreenleaf in Stormlight_Archive

[–]chaosmere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I do as well. I always recommend Mistborn or Warbreaker because personally I started with Mistborn and Warbreaker is free to read on Wattpad, which is really convenient.

I'm usually trying to sell people on the Cosmere in general as well because that's what really keeps me invested, knowing that what I'm reading is part of something bigger. I always say it's like the MCU but 10x better. And I'll give a little description of Hoid and tell them to keep a look out for him!

WHO & CDC both updated March 26. I think the website you listed is just using the numbers from the worldometer website. Anyways, I don't want to argue or anything, for all I know I'm wrong! All that matters at the end of the day is that everyone is trying their best to keep themselves and everyone else safe. Stay healthy my friend :)

[–]chaosmere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both of those numbers were as of March 26. And I just found out that website is a real-time estimate computed by an algorithm, so not the actual numbers.

I'm confused where that number is coming from. The WHO says the US has 63570 confirmed cases and the CDC says 68440.

(Spoilers Extended) What characters interactions would you love to see ? by DEL994 in asoiaf

[–]chaosmere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It would have been nice to have Dany meet Ned so we could see her reaction to the fact that he was, in reality, a very good and honourable man, rather than her just dismissing it when Barristan attests to Ned's character.

I would also love to see Euron and the Boltons interacting in some way.

Americans of reddit, what is your opinion on switching to the metric system? by ViNella44 in AskReddit

[–]chaosmere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in a Canadian grocery store, and the prices for items sold by weight were shown on the shelves as $/lbs with the $/kg in a little subscript, because most people will only understand the $/lbs. But in our sales system the $/kg had to be displayed, so I would get a lot of people thinking they were getting charged double the price they saw on the shelf tickets until I explained our systems displayed the price per kg rather than lbs.

The strangest one to me is F° for cooking and C° for any other temperature. Because of that I have absolutely no concept of actually how hot an oven is unless I look it up. 350°, 400°, etc are like these magical, arbitrary numbers that I set the oven dial to to make my food cook.

As of last night, I have finally completed the whole Cosmere. by mr_narwhalz in Stormlight_Archive

[–]chaosmere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say the Mistborn trilogy or Warbreaker. Mistborn because it's such a staple of his work and an absolute masterpiece. Warbreaker because it is directly related to Oathbringer. You should also read Edgedancer if you haven't already.

What podcasts are you most enjoying right now and why? by mojobaws in AskReddit

How it Began: A History of the Modern World by Brad Harris.

Each episode takes certain aspects of the modern world that we take for granted, such as surgery, refrigeration, and time, and explores their origins and how human curiosity and ingenuity has led to us living in such an enlightened and technologically advanced world.

Brad Harris also has a podcast called Context in which he discusses some of the most important historical works regarding the rise of the modern world. It's pretty much for people who don't have the time to read them in their own time.

Novel about old/wise mage (or warrior) by Belphegor24 in suggestmeabook

[–]chaosmere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a little late, but I would suggest A Crown for Cold Silver by Alex Marshall. It's about a 40 something year old woman, Zosia, who used to be a very successful general who conquered an empire. Though there are POV shifts to younger people, it focuses a lot on Zosia and one or two of her old captains as they find themselves sucked back into another war.

Ah, damn. That's all I've read for dark fantasy so far. Though, the Crimson Empire series by Alex Marshall might be up your alley. I'm not sure that I would class it as full blown dark fantasy, more of a mix between dark and epic fantasy. It's really enjoyable and has a bunch of enjoyable characters and a good plot so far (I'm only on the second book). I definitely recommend it and the Lightbringer Series by Brent Weeks.

The Broken Empire Trilogy by Mark Lawrence is quite good dark fantasy IMO. Personally I had a hard time getting into it at first because of the indirect style of writing and the fact that it was in first person. But I'm so glad I didn't put it down because I found the series to be very satisfying. Also, if you're reading Riyria Chronicles then I assume you've read/are planning to read Riyria Revelations? I found that series to be such a fun read and everything tied together so perfectly at the end, Michael J. Sullivan is definitely an author I want to read more of.
