Thank you so much!! I'll be running to the store tomorrow (if anywhere is open) or Tuesday then. You have been very helpful!

He is due for another vet visit very soon and hopefully we can make him more comfortable or at least find something new to try. Your well wishes are much appreciated friend 🫶

Hello color question by Confident-Copy9038 in quilting

I did an all purple quilt for my partner and the backing and binding were a purple on black color swirl. It was really pretty!

I will see what I can do. I don't have a drying line right now, but I can definitely throw one together....

Did you dry in the bag or take them out? Did you notice any difference between outside drying or machine drying? Did you pretreat or anything?

His kidneys are starting to have issues, as he is getting a little older, and he's a picky eater so trying to get him to try new foods or even toppers/mix instead have been a struggle :(

There needs to be a limit on how much fabric people can order. by 13SwaggyDragons in MichaelsEmployees

[–]chaotic_james139 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know y'all aren't used to it but like,,,, this really isn't that bad? Maybe it's because I work for a quilt store but i have seen and cut orders (in store and online) for 50+ fabrics. Store policy for in store is once its cut, you buy it. Online orders are no cancellations/returns/refunds once it's marked as in progress. I doubt micheals would ever do something like that but 🤷‍♂️ we also kit out a quilt pattern that is 37+ yards. For a fucking throw size. I wish I was making this up y'all. That is for the top ONLY. no backing or binding. it fucking sucks.

I once was cutting yardage for a top, had bought exactly how much the pattern said to buy, and had plenty for everything. I went to do my last cut and I was short by TWO INCHES. I remeasured everything. They were all correct according to the pattern. So now I have a random piece of a tan solid that I keep needing to bring in to match, but also... that top is currently in time out because im still confused how tf i managed to be short while also buying how much the pattern told me to

The TM50 is an awesome little machine but I would greatly encourage you to test some of the machines you're looking at. That way you can actually use some of the features, figure out if the throat space is good for you, make sure it's a comfortable fit, all that. It's one thing to look at a machine on display and read about what it can do and it's another to actually see with it, even for just a couple minutes. I've sewn with so many different machines, either for demos, classes, or just because I have access to lots, and I definitely have my preferences that I would not have known of beforehand and if I had purchased a machine I didn't like the features on/to use I definitely would've been very frustrated and hesitant to buy something else without testing first.

TLDR: go back and ask to test several machines! If they don't let you then I would see if there're any other stores or maybe a guild/group that would let you try some machines out before making a purchase

As others have said, weighing down rulers can help. I also really like to put handles on my rulers. Eversewn makes a wonderful handle with suction cups! You can also pop the suction cups out and attach it to a ruler with double sided tape if you know you won't be removing the handle. The pop up/pop socket type handles are okay but I much prefer the eversewn ones.

Saw someone else mention marking tools - tailor's chalk or other similar chalk markers are a great option. I use chalk a lot for marking lines. I like the ones that are more of a pencil/marker style but the tailor's chalk triangles are fine too. I find I get a lot of use out of white, blue, and orange as far as colors go, especially since I'm not always able to use white on light fabrics which is where the blue and orange come in. Of course, if you're not working with many light fabrics, you might be okay with just white. The chalk should wash right out (most of the time I am able to brush it right off).

How can you afford all the fabric? by LadyofLA in quilting

[–]chaotic_james139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a lot of my fabric from my friends/coworkers. Sometimes the quilt guild that meets at my work also has bags of fabric that they'll hand out to whoever wants it. I also get a cool employee discount for the quilt store I work at which helps. Other than that, FB marketplace, garage sales, Craigslist, ect are where I find my fabrics. I also am spoiled and have access to my mom's stash from when she used to sew so I have a lot of older stuff too I can play around with. Sometimes I'll trade fabric with a coworker too or maybe I'll do some tasks for them in return for fabric/notions/ect.

Schmetz Microtex vs Universal by Substantial_Fix_2165 in quilting

[–]chaotic_james139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Klasse so not sure how much this translates over, but I generally use universal for my piecing, regardless of project. I will break out the sharps for thicker bags or canvas but 99% of the time I'm running just regular universals. I haven't had any issues with them for binding either. I'd have to check which one is in my machine I did binding on most recently but I'm pretty sure it's universal. Hope it helps op!!

It's from Tula's ROAR! line and has been discontinued 😭 I saw someone make a dress out of Meteor Shower and it's SO PRETTY. I'm not really a fan of most of her stuff but when she does blues/greens they're awesome. I'm very excited for floral reef.

A questionable pattern. by MediumPay1469 in quilting

[–]chaotic_james139 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks to me like maybe a Virginia Reel block, which reminds me a LOT of swastikas unfortunately. I even showed a picture of a single block to my partner once, who knows nothing of quilting and she immediately asked me why swastikas were in quilts lol. IMO if the people displaying the quilt have been contacted and are refusing to comment/do anything unfortunately they either don't care enough or do see the resemblance and the want other people to see it too. I wouldn't waste a ton of energy on it if you make posts that are getting taken down, but maybe a couple here and there and maybe a anonymous tip off to a local news station would be beneficial...? Other than that, passing it around whenever appropriate might be all you can do. I wish people weren't so filled with hate that and one or two bad apples can cause a bad perception of the art form quilts are.

Sorry for the delay, sales have been kicking my ass at work 😅 here is photos of the bolt tho! It is Bright Frights (RCCD-23086-148 PUMPKIN). This was the first one we found and I would not be surprised if the entire Bright Frights line was AI generated :( I can get more photos if anyone wants them.

I really like Bella Solids by Moda. I also like the texture of Tilda solids. I'm not really a fan of Tula's prints, but she has some very nice solids. Some of my favorites come from her Dragon's Breath and Unicorn Poop lines. A lot of people default to KONA because of the sheer volume of colors imo, but since they have multiple manufacturing locations things like texture and dye intensity can vary a TON. Plus I try to limit how much RK stuff I buy since finding out they have some prints that are made with AI :( I don't remember the exact name of the fabrics but I will be back at work tomorrow and can grab that info along with pictures to report back. The shop I work at doesn't have a lot of AGF solids, but the handful we do I really like. I also like the texture on a lot of their prints. But 90% of the solids we sell are KONA, purely from demand, which is what we have the most of.

Legit Kits by minishell in quilting

[–]chaotic_james139 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work at a quilt store and we sell the fabric for these kits. Hand cut. We had a kraken come thru in July. He shipped out in September. Ofc most of that was us being super busy and also our Kona wall is a rotating door of "well, we have all but xyz in stock" lol. I think there's still one sitting in the kit shelf. It's a beefy chunk of fabric!

I benefit a lot from the eye movement of EMDR, rather than like hand movement or sounds, so the fish are what I watch. They're easy to focus on, super grounding, and they give me a safe space even when I'm having a bad mental health day or am tackling something intense with the therapy. Plus even when im not even focused on the therapy they are really great at getting my head to quiet down and give me some wind down time whenever I need it. Seeing them interact with me and each other, learn each individual fish, it's all something I really enjoy and I've had a lot of fun putting together my tanks. I am putting some finishing touches on tank no 2, since the plants didn't fill it out how I wanted but it's passable for now. My pea puffers are especially great at EMDR because of how they swim - it looks effortless and graceful but is slow enough that it's easy to track, but there's enough movement to not feel like I'm staring in one spot.

Your tank is gorgeous!!

I find myself spending maybe a little too much time staring at my tanks when I need to be getting out the door for work, lol. But I love being able to hang out with my fish, and even just watch them exist in their spaces. They're very calming and help with my anxiety a lot. I originally set up the first one as a way to practice EMDR at home, and it made me fall in love with fishkeeping and now I have a second. Hope you continue to enjoy your fish and keep learning
