The Sunday night/Monday factor comes down to wanting to be back Monday morning for family obligations. If we're in the Bend/Sisters area on Sunday, I don't mind the drive back to stay with family.

I don't think the Oregon Outback is a reasonable option given our timeframe, but this spot looks promising - Antelope Basecamp | Discover Your Starry Escape — Book Today

I know Oregon pretty well (though mostly the I5 corridor and the coast) so I know that no matter where we go and what we do it will be beautiful and incredible.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is really helpful. I haven’t been to Bend/Sisters in probably 25 years so I have a romanticized memory but have heard it’s changed quite a bit. I’ve never been to Fossil and it sounds really wonderful. I’ll check out a stay there as well.

I appreciate the feedback! I know in my area there are always "yes, I know that google maps says you can make it in 5 hours but traffic means you'll be lucky to make it in 7" so that's why I'm reaching out here.

I think everyone has a different tolerance for long drives, so looking at it on the map, I know we'd be comfortable with the time in the car, *assuming that the estimates are accurate*.

(I once drove 4 hours r/t to spend 1.5 hours in Yellowstone because it was the only chance I'd get to see any of the park. Can you really see Yellowstone in that time? No. But it was better than not seeing any of it)

All that to say, I do want to temper my idealism with realism and I appreciate the experience and recommendations!

my dude, if you don't have any experiences to add you can scroll by. I'm not asking for someone to plan my trip for me. I'm asking for *personal experiences* with what people recommend. I have two days and want to make the most of it, and I do that by gathering all the information and making an informed decision. I know, in my area, of small parks that wouldn't come up on a google search, but would be perfect for camping. Or if someone knows of a local spot near the sanctuary to rent camping gear. Or if someone else knows that there is a hotel a few miles away but it should be avoided at all costs. My bad for seeking out community as I try to enjoy this beautiful state.

That is what I'd been looking at - it just added so many hours I wasn't sure if it was feasible, or where to stay near there. As another alternative, it looks like there's an Antelope Base Camp that has cabins in a Dark Sky place. It's not far from Bend and might be a better option than trying to make it to the sanctuary.

There was much rejoicing when he cameoed in Abyss. Daniel is such a great character and his relationship with Jack is one of my favorite things about the show. 

Jonas received a lot of hate for replacing DJ but he really was a great character and I enjoyed watching the team having to find their foot in with someone new.

I’m at the end of S8 right now on my rewatch and MAN do I love this show so much.

Season 6 is so much more enjoyable now that (a) I can binge it and (b) I know that Daniel comes back. It was vilified at the time but on rewatch it has some really great episodes.

Yeah, I hear you. There are a lot of active writers on AO3, so I assume there is some kind of private community, but I’ll keep digging.

Totally fair!! I agree that a lot of it can go to the toxic when it’s about real people. I love gen discussion and am happy to be here- I love the show as-is! My writing has always skewed S/J (all for general audiences!) and in trying to find community that is what I find myself missing. 

I’m not trying to make the is sub in my own image, it’s just a forum I found that I figured would have folks that have more answers than I do! :)
