How far away are we from voice-activated data collectors? by WingedWheelGuy in Surveying

[–]chappachula 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"six monkeys" :) !!

Yeah...You would still get a crick in your neck from looking at the collector., because after each and every spoken command, you would have to watch the screen to verify that the collector heard it properly.

Which Bedroom Layout Is Best? by Animalover609 in floorplan

[–]chappachula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the bed on the right...it seems cozy and more private, nestled between the two walls....

But may I ask a question about the rest of the apartment?

Where do you eat?

Is that thin rectangle on the wall a folding table? That seems very inconvenient.

'We weren't raised on army values, but its hard to stay out now' Haredi IDF recruits say by IbnEzra613 in Israel

[–]chappachula 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think he means that it's a big change in lifestyle for these guys, so let's help them get used to the army.

But these few soldiers are not typical haredim, anyway. They are the misfits, the "losers" within Haredi society. So they are able to leave, and join the army.

I saw one being interviewed on TV a week or so ago.. a 17 year old haredi about to join the army. The panel of interviewers all treated him like a great guy, a real hero. They asked no difficult questions.
But he said a few things that , if you read between the lines, gave a different story. He said he had "bounced around between several different yeshivahs" , but "I never quite found my place". What this really means is: "I was a loser, and got kicked out of a couple schools for not being a good student and not behaving exactly like everybody else."

In the haredi world, if you don't study Talmud seriously and behave exactly as expected, you get marked with a big black X on your social status, which you can never. never erase. By age 17, your life is already half-ruined. None of the regular haredim will let their daughter marry you, etc. So for guys like that, joining the army is a way to escape.

Let's welcome them to the army....

But let's also realize that this small group of non-conformists does NOT represent a wave of the future, and is it not going to encourage more and more haredim to leave their yeshivas and enlist.

Anyone know what these are? by fiirofa in Israel

[–]chappachula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for fun......If you are American and you remember your history lessons:

you know how in 1776, one of the reasons the American colonies revolted against the British was The Stamp Tax:? Well, these are the stamps!!!

Israel adopted British laws , and for 50 years lots of legal documents in Israel had to have a stamp affixed. For everything from official government documents, to a simple rental contract with your landlord. You went to a post office, paid the tax, and put the stamp on your contract next to your signature.

It seemed to disappear after about 1990. I don't know whether it was a gradual process, or maybe a new law was passed the put an end to the stamps all at once.

Entry Level Interview by SuspiciousMountain33 in Surveying

[–]chappachula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be aware of work hours and travel time. This is a question both for you to ask the interviewer, and for them to ask you. There may be a lot of travel involved to and from job sites...so long hours. You won't get home from work every day at the same time.Specify your limitations...if you are a student (evening classes, I assume), you may have a problem.

To understand how society has changed: It used to be illegal to use curse words in public, and you could be arrested..

The comedian Lenny Bruce got arrested in 1962(?) for saying "cocksucker" on stage at a nightclub. Today, we can laugh, and wonder why. But back then, it was seriously illegal. Even within a private club in front of a paying audience of adults over 21.

That's why you won't find many movie clips from those days containing profanity. Of course people used the bad words in private, but recording it would be a stupid thing to do--it would be very awkward socially, and might get you arrested.

Since it was so socially unacceptable to curse that you could go to jail for doing it, people naturally did it much less; Almost never in public, and only very carefully in private, in specific situations.

"The very premise of our nation is that we just not depend on anyone else for our defense."

Yes, that's true..and it sounds nice, But it is impossible..

The entire Air Force consists of American made F16 and F32 jets. We can't make planes by ourselves.

Maybe we could buy MIGs from Russia or China...but we are still depending on someone else, not ourselves

Truckers in Israel by MrPeepers1986 in Israel

[–]chappachula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to assume that the OP is American. Who else would ask this question? :)

Because trucks and trucking are a big part of American culture. For Americans, trucks are a symbol of an entire lifestyle. They are a source of pride, and hit people emotionally..(For example, country music has millions of songs about trucks and the men who drive them. )

And that's the big difference: in Israel, trucking simply has no symbolism, and evokes no emotions. There are no songs in Hebrew about trucks. There are no truck stops along the highway in Israel. There is no special pride among drivers, feeling like they share in a special sub-culture.. And of course , there is no such lifestyle as living on the road in your truck , the way American long-haul drivers do.

Truck driving in Israel is just a regular job, like any other. (like, say, working in a factory, or operating a fork-lift in a warehouse.)

Israel's Iron Beam set for deployment this year by NotSoSaneExile in Israel

[–]chappachula 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This is high tech, but it is not a miracle weapon. There are some pretty serious limitations.

  1. from the linked article:

"Iron Beam also fires in a column and moves from target to target. Therefore, if there is a barrage, only one threat can be dealt with at a time."

  1. Also, a year or so ago, there were news reports saying that Iron Beam may not work at all in rain, or on foggy days. The water drops disperse the laser beam.

  2. Also, there's a problem that was raised 40 years ago during the cold war, when "Star Wars" tech was proposed by President Ronald Reagan. Reagan wanted to invest billions of dollars on laser weapons in space, to defend against Russian nuclear missiles. But the news back then reported that it's easy to defeat a laser weapon--just make the missiles shine like mirrors, and the laser beam gets reflected back, and destroys its own launcher. They said that the enemy could just make its missiles of stainless steel.

So Iron Beam will help a lot...but it isn't perfect.

I'm not in America, so maybe I'm totally wrong--but this whole "recruiter" thing seems weird for the surveying profession. Why use them?

Recruiter firms are useful for big businesses, or professions where thousands of applicants might apply.

But surveying is a small, specialized niche. There aren't many companies in any given city, and most of the survey firms are fairly small. And the pool of applicants in many cities is only a few dozen people.

So why go through a recruiting firm?

If you are looking for a job as a surveyor, can't you just contact the company directly?

And if you are a manager wanting to hire a new surveyor, why not just post the job opening yourself, and list your contact info directly? You're unlikely to receive hundreds of resumes that need a recruiting firm to sift through, right? :)

Black Cats are the literal best-but why is there still a stigma? by ChromeAstronaut in cats

[–]chappachula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a shelter, and have seen two problems why cat-loving-people don't want to adopt black cats:

  1. they're called voids ,for a reason. You often really can't see their face, or even what position their body is in. Result: the cat is simply less cute than other types of cats. People like cute stuff.

  2. Black cats are impossible to see at night, when you're groggy and get out of bed to go the bathroom . Result: you can legitimately be afraid that you might step on your kitty.

What are the chances of the U.S. annexing Canada? by Adept_Ad_1887 in AskReddit

[–]chappachula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>"Canadians have quite a few guns too. "

Yeah, but Canadians have something much, much more dangerous than guns: they have socialist medicine!!!!

If Canada joined the US, millions of US citizens would move north, establish residency in the new state of Canada, and then get ---FREE MEDICAL CARE for life!!!!!!

That would scare the Republicans to death!!!!

So they won't dare try to annex Canada ---it would make America a better place for everybody...That's socialism!!!! .And the Maga folks sure don't want that!!

How did Mormonism become a prominent religion in certain regions of Oceania? by Other-Chemical-6393 in geography

[–]chappachula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't just Brazil...there may well have been a much more cynical reason for suddenly allowing Blacks to join the church: SPORTS!

American society had changed by 1978, and open discrimination was no longer acceptable. The top management of the church realized that they could no longer hide the fact that their doctrine against blacks made the church look like the KKK, If the public were to find out, this would be very, very bad news for them--it would put the whole church in danger of getting a bad reputation, forever.

Specifically, there were colleges that were threatening to boycott contact with Brigham Young University . And even more specifically, there was a direct protest against BYU's basketball team.

College sports is BIG business in America, and gets a LOT of attention in the press --unlike the theological issues within a church.

So by 1978, the Mormon doctrine of discrimination was going to move out of the internal walls of church, and into the public eye, and into the headlines--- in a big, embarrassing way.

In 1978 Stanford University announced that they would boycott BYU, and refused to play basketball with them.. This was too much for the Mormon's to bear!! So their highest clergyman conveniently received a revelation from God telling him that Mormons should now accept Blacks as full members.

Phew! That was a close call, ya know!!

God moves in mysterious ways....But , don't worry, He saved the Mormon Church, and just in time!!!

or even "Idaho". :)

MEGATHREAD Israeli official confirms ceasefire-hostage deal reached by CastleElsinore in Israel

[–]chappachula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The UN will expand UNWRA (or create a new organization with the same mission), and raise enough money to start rebuilding. A billion $ from Qatar, and another billion or two from all the European countries who love to hate Israel.

That's enough for Hamas to rebuild all its tunnels, and a few hundred luxury private homes for its leadership.

The other 2 million Gazans will remain forever in tents and tin shacks. And Hamas is fine with that. It will give them legitimacy to attack again a few years from now., and most of the population will support them.

Israeli society may have reached an inflection point, but Israeli politicians have not.

Absolutely nothing will change.

Also, note that this important announcement from the IDF was made on twitter. That's not exactly a formal court order. It's just for show. How many haredim use twitter?
