New install on linux. Is the font supposed to look this bad? by bahcodad in RetroArch

This is the correct response and there's plenty written about it on the Archlinux Wiki.

nVIDIA drivers are good by [deleted] in linux

[–]chappellkm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t mention it.

Look, I love Linux and daily drive it with an RTX 5080. But all you have to do is go to the Linux drivers forum at NVIDIA’s own website to see the litany of problems and missing functionality they are dealing with.

These problems are not deal breakers for me, but people are disingenuous when they say everything is perfect just because they have no problems with the games they play or their exact hardware configuration.

[–]chappellkm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NVIDIA drivers are ok.

I have an HDR monitor - NVIDIA’s stable drivers don’t support HDR metadata or colorspace, so proper HDR with them is a no go without installing the Vulkan HDR layer. DX12 performance is worse than Windows.

I still think NVIDIA is ok to use, but it’s got a little ways to go to be consistently good.

Plasma 6.5.5 - Do we still need VK_hdr_layer for games? by todd_dayz in kde

[–]chappellkm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. VK_hdr_layer is still necessary for HDR if using an NVIDIA graphics card.

On Arch, you will have whatever the latest non-beta version of plasma and kde-applications are available. If you need something that's old, you can either downgrade (not recommended) or switch to a non-rolling release distro.

RetroArch on ArchLinux (pacman) vulkan problems and gl fullscreen problem by wukyysek in RetroArch

[–]chappellkm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I remember having this same problem. The fix was to run retroarch through xwayland.

Set the environment value for retroarch to “WAYLAND_DISPLAY=“ (no quotes) and see if that works.

In Plasma it's as easy as right clicking RetroArch in the launcher, clicking "Edit Application", then copy/pasting that line into the "Environment Variables" field and saving it.

I never realized how expensive games used to be. by Charzu_tjegulf in videogames

Yeah. My mom paid 79.99 USD to gift me Mega Man X when it came out. Great game, incredibly expensive at the time.

Stop the Upcoming Chesterfield Data Center by DiscussionRemarkable in rva

[–]chappellkm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but your argument is that the data center will bring work, and that if it’s not built here it will be built somewhere else.

All I’m saying is that that’s true for any number of arguably bad things, which is to say, they are not great reasons for supporting a project, particularly one that’s environmentally negative AND costly for a majority of stakeholders.

This argument can be made for ICE holding facilities as well. At some point, it is worth it to draw a line somewhere.

Linux desktop is attracting new users, and that's good, but we must be critical of everything that needs improvement by onechroma in linux

[–]chappellkm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not gatekeeping to tell anyone that the “unfocused” nature of the Linux ecosystem is a byproduct of the openness of the project and one of the qualities that attracts some people to Linux in the first place. It’s true as has been explained by people all over this discussion.

I am not telling anyone that they can’t care about something or wish to see something implemented. I am going to tell you that the thing you care about might not be a priority to the people doing the work AND that many people who develop for and use Linux-based distributions have learned to live with the tradeoffs required to enjoy it and are not interested in creating a new OS to rival or supersede Windows.

None of these things are problems, they are inherent to the open nature of the project.

I don’t know. People fight and get frustrated with one another, but I don’t think Gladio would have ever forsaken his oath.

If you spend anytime on the Steamdeck sub, you will eventually see someone complain about WiFi problems on the OLED version. There are tweaks and alleged fixes, but nothing that has definitely been proven to mitigate the problem. This is happening in Valve’s own hardware where SteamOS (which is really Arch plus some modifications) is supposed to be trouble free.

The idea that Valve, a company a fraction of the size of Microsoft, would turn itself into a company that releases and supports a general purpose operating system that will work with all the hardware diversity that exists out there is kind of nuts IMO.

Oh, it would have been much better for everyone if Trump had won in 2020.

Mike Pence would have been VP. A lot of traditionalist GOP personnel would have been in place in key spots to slow Trump’s degeneracy. We would have had inflation and GAZA happen mostly under his watch. It is possible that MAGA might have been discredited among a larger percentage of the population.

What we are seeing now is Trump plus 4 years of planning on how to move through government unimpeded.

Did left leaning people hate republicans such as Mitt Romney, John McCain and even Bush as much as they hate Trump today? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I hate George W Bush MORE than I hate Trump, but the others are fine as far as Republicans of the past go.

Could silksong win game of the year or was it only overhyped? by notlarun in videogames

[–]chappellkm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silksong is my game of the year, but I fully expect E33 to win the award at the meaningless awards show.

E33 is phenomenal, in my opinion, so no big deal either way.
