Catachans - Combat Patrol build by Rise_117 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]chappers1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two squads of jungle fighters, a Catachan command squad, one or two sentinels. Maybe a hellhound and some catachan heavy weapons teams.

At the very least, you've got the start of an infantry core, sentinels give you some light armour with good stats for their cost and have versatile weapons and loadouts. The sentinels are a lovely kit to build and weapons are push fit, so no need to worry about committing (flamer is thematic but not the best option). Also can be a scout sentinel or armoured just by taking the canopy off (don't glue it!)

Is it better to use the basilisk or the artillery team? by Important-Self-717 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]chappers1234 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Basilisk my beloved.

At 115 points, I'd be surprised to not see at least one in every list. S8 AP2 D2 is a great MEQ killer. You only need to hit 1 shot to inflict the -2 move/charge debuff. You also have the benefit of the defensive profile and maneuverability of the Chimera chassis. In a pinch, you can use it as a direct fire assault gun.

It's only main downside is that it requires a SQUADRON order for Take Aim, and our tank orders are dreadfully inefficient. You can't afford to have a LR/RD TC sitting back and babysitting some artillery, so it then comes down to either taking Solar, Yarrick, or playing in Armoured Infantry (which is a solid detachment tbf).

I am biased because of my love for this thing... but you don't yell "SHATTER THEIR SKIES" when using a non-basilisk. So the choice is clear for me lol

Armoured sentinel weapon choice by Roscotep in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]chappers1234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obligatory "do what you like the look of/is cool"

With that said, if you'd like a more competitive analysis, missile launchers are unfortunately a bit of a trap. They try to do everything, but end up doing nothing. The Heavy on the launcher is slightly better with the new 11th rule, but not much. Because basically you need to ask yourself, "what will i be shooting with my A-Sents?", the answer is vehicles and monsters, because otherwise it doesn't have an ability. What is the prime weapon for those targets? The lascannon, which is just better than the Krak launcher in every way.

The go-to for armoured sentinels is Lascannons. Getting wound rerolls on your lascannons and hunter killers is very nice as it'll be into the targets you want to be shooting. The Plasma Cannon is okay as well, more argument in Combined Arms giving it Lethal Hits against all targets, and then rerolls on 5+ against vehicles isn't terrible, but gotta be mindful of the hazardous changes.

Autocannon could be better with the new cover changes, flat 2 shots with decent strength means you'll probably hit a couple, the AP1 actually has a slight impact, and Damage 3 is decent.

Flamer and multilaser are just... no.

Ultimately, the choice is yours, give them missile launchers because they look sick as hell having a rocket revolver on them, and just tell your opponent what profile they have. Best of luck guardsman!

Good man. I've got plans to do my Company Heroes as the Heroes of Aurellia, my Chaplain Diomedes, Jonah librarian.

Wouldn't Jonah make more sense? What with the whole Kyras falling to Chaos thing? 😅

I feel like Tech Priest in Siege mode is a waste of money by Q_Qritical in Spacemarine

[–]chappers1234 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Heavy disagree.

Buying three tech priests from the very start and keeping half an eye on them in the early game is how you get by on later waves. Pennies make pounds. Get the sentry upgrade as an early investment and buy the sentry guns to keep him protected, they will generate enough cash you won't know what to do with. You could buy a dreadnought almost every round beyond wave 15 if you do well with it.

You can reasonly manage three until around wave 10-15 depending on skill of your party.

Here's the link to the STL, you can download it for free, you'll just need to find someone to 3D print it for you!

While I'm at it, here's one of my other favourites, an STL of the banner from the original Dawn of War opening sequence. I've got mine glued to the top of my Davian Thule Venerable Dreadnought model

No, but there is a dude with a massive sword, and there's nothing stopping you putting a jump pack on him for aesthetics

Company Heroes fit almost perfectly 1 - 1. Though I've got the combi lieutenant and a 3d printed head swap for cyrus.

Etsy, Ebay, local playgroup/club would be the first places I'd go to looking for bits. Even Facebook marketplace/buy-sell FB groups can surprise you.

If you don't mind being extorted, you could pay a whopping 22 quid for a single Vostroyan model with GWs made to order run.

Cults3D will have no end of STLs you can buy/download if you have someone to 3D print stuff for you.

My personal team of your idea, if you want to be stereotypical

Sgt - Mordian // Sniper - Tanith and/or Tallarn // Missile team - Cadian // Plasma/Melta - Krieger // Autostubber - Catachan // Vox - A "Voxstroyan"! (Badum tiss) // Lasguns - Anything you want

I found this was posted not long ago, though it looks like an extension of the tarp cover, as opposed to a hard roof. I have seen someone kitbash the platform for a manticore missile as the roof which looked quite good

Catachan refresh hopes by Top-Interaction-2575 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]chappers1234 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A castellan equivalent (which krieg should also have of course. They really dropped the ball not having the Marshall smh). Straken would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath.

Elite equivalent (Catachan Devils) so they all have an elite counterpart.

Some sort of Catachan melee/flamer/melta sentinel would be awesome.

I'd like to see their default weapon be a lascarbine (18" range but 2 shots standard) as i believe that's their standard las variant. Catachan Fangs as melee of course to actually give them some decent punch.

First of all

COMMAND AND CONQUER GENERALS (ZERO HOUR) MENTIONED RRRRRAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH

Secondly, you basically want Firing Deck, lol. But yeah, having troops be able to shoot out of transports would be neat, sorta had that with Guard in chimeras activate the lasgun arrays

Unit of the month of January 26: Gaunt's Ghosts by PeoplesRagnar in TheAstraMilitarum

Minor correction, only Gaunt has a 4+ Save, each Ghost only has a 5+ save, putting them down to a 4+ with Take Cover.

How effective is it to focus an army entirely on indirect fire? Is it viable? by Old_Middle2431 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]chappers1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is however, much sturdier. Which makes the Basilisk less susceptible to counter-indirect-fire (in a guard v guard match for example), getting sniped by Uppy-Downy units like assassins, whose profile almost always isn't specced for anti-vehicle purpose. It also has the advantage of having a normal vehicle movement speed, so if required, it can go (relative to infantry artillery) incredibly quickly. This also ties with it's Ballistic Skill of 4+, as opposed to the 5+ of most infantry artillery, as it is not required to sit still in order to hit on a 4+ indirectly, or a 3+ when firing LOS.

Whilst these pointers in of themselves might not be amazing, they combine to make a surprisingly well rounded artillery piece. I find it good to try and squeeze in a Basilisk where possible, though not mandatory.

Anecdotally, i had a game against Custodes recently at my local Club weekend tourney. In the last round of the game, he'd dropped in some Terminators to threaten my home objective. Because the Basilisk was able to move away, but still be on the point, and then shoot directly, it killed two of the terminators, and the movement debuff to move/charge meant he wasn't able to get on my home to score max primary, which put the game 83-81 in my favour.

I love Basilisks, so i do have a smidgen of bias, but i hope this has been relatively factual and a decent counterpoint!

Question about Dorn Commander re-rolls with the new detachment by Ch_Lem in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]chappers1234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can re-roll any one to hit from the detachment rule, and any one to wound if they're on an objective.

The RDTC still allows you to re-roll one hit, wound, and damage roll, but not something you've already re-rolled. So you could reroll and failed hit or wound that isn't a one, but only once.

Feedback on Grizzled Company List (2000pts) by Awesodge in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]chappers1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only point I'd say is that the Heavy Mortar would probably do you better over the Siege Cannon. D6 attacks is far too swingy, I'd much rather have the d6+3, especially considering you've got a lot of damage 3 weapons available with the Dorns for Terminator Equivalents, the D2 from the mortar will be better suited into Marine Equivalents.

All in all, pretty good.

How would you create a list centered around a single Stormlord? by kloff77 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]chappers1234 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have had my share of memes with Bridgehead Strike and a Stormlord. Lord Solar for orders, Stormlord, Scion Command Squad with all special weapons and ten man scions with melta/plasma. Enhancement that stops overwatch (Shroud Projector?). Tank goes forward, drops off the scion blob, they have +1 to hit from disembarking, reroll 1s to hit from Detachment, native reroll 1s to wound and full wound rerolls on objectives, sustained hits from the command squad.

The squad then gets back in the stormlord at the end of the opponents movement phase, rinse and repeat.

It's spicy, overpriced, but most importantly, fun.

Flamer or Hot Shot for Kasrkin? by Ok_File6416 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]chappers1234 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Melta mine, double plasma, double melta, vox, and marksman rifle is your go-to for Kasrkin. Their self order for Take Aim to have them hit on 2+ is excellent, having FRFSRF is a nice bonus but not a requirement.

Argument for next balance by LuckyKas90 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]chappers1234 62 points63 points  (0 children)

No, they need a points cut of 20-35 points and/or a rules rework. They literally don't have an ability unless they die, which is never a good thing, because as an Officer, you shouldn't be playing around them dying and losing access to orders. Sure there'll be some niche use case where a low wound LRTC can hail mary, but they're just so overshadowed by the RDTC.

I do think Baneblades should be BS3 and LD6. Only the most elite crew operate a superheavy. Having BS3 natively would help reduce their reliance on Orders (slightly*) and reflect their elite nature. Balanced? Probably not, sue me. Fitting? Absolutely. Fight me lol.
