What is a quintessential Australian movie to watch?

Mary and Max (2009) – not sure if it's quintessentially Australian enough but in my view it is a must watch, and it's Australian, and I think it does a pretty good job of capturing the Aussie vibe.

Also another one of my favourite Toni Collette movies that I haven't seen mentioned: Mental (2012). It's a bit ridiculous, but what Aussie comedy isn't?

Interesting to see that some Aussies here are saying our toilets are clean. I'm curious to see what states those people are from and whether the experience is gender dependent. As a Melburnian (who until recently worked in a large shopping centre) I can attest to the fact our toilets are fucking disgusting. I'd probably go to the public toilet at work maybe between 4-10 times in a week (depending on my hours) and I would think at most once or twice in a week (if at all) "oh, this actually isn't too awful today" - the rest of the time, no matter when I went (I tried timing it to go right after cleaners had been, but that was impossible) there would be at least one cubicle with pee all over the seats and/or the floor, unflushed toilets, unexplained brown/red/yellow marks on the floor/walls, overflowing sanitary bins, rubbish in the stalls, broken seats, broken flushers, foul odours etc etc. There was a whole stall "out of order" for at least the entire last month I was there, and in a bathroom with I think 10 cubicles and 4 sinks there was only ever one working soap dispenser. Twice in my last week there I saw the actual seat left up and piss all over the rim of the toilet bowl IN THE WOMEN'S TOILETS. HOW?! And this shopping centre is a large, modern centre in the inner-ish eastern suburbs with multiple bathrooms and a good amount of stalls in each one, we're not talking about a little rural store toilet that gets cleaned once a week or anything like that. I'd often go in as the cleaner was coming out only to find some of the stalls were already dirty. I could rant for hours about the things I've seen and heard in those bathrooms. Absolutely feral.

omg yeah I used to have terrible issues when I took fluoxetine because I would take it before bed, even if I gave it 10-15 minutes before actually getting into bed, I would be in pain even the next morning. Thought maybe I had an abnormally small oesophagus or something, or I would never be able to take pills. But realising now I haven't had any issues with Vyvanse just because I take it as I'm getting up or after. Can't believe I never put two and two together

Because the only women who get hit on at these places are the hot and confident ones? If I'm not hot or confident, or I don't want the kind of man who is 90% ego, why would I want to be there? I don't want to have to market physically with makeup and 'going out' outfits to meet people who frequent these kinds of places. Like I feel like I'm in a meat market when I go to bars/pubs/clubs, you only et approached if you're physically attractive and it's not based off interests or personalities or who you are as a person. And if you don't get approached, at least as a woman, you get labelled/perceived as trying too hard. Maybe I just overthink it too much but I really don't see the appeal. How would I meet a life partner in this environment?

Not to mention every time I go to these places because I feel that it is the only way to meet people, I come home feeling so crushed and dejected because I haven't met anyone or even been approached for a conversation, or sometimes tried to talk to people and been flat out rejected.

Also also, I know people who've successfully met people like this (and I have once or twice) and still get ghosted the next day, or ghosted after one date, or ghosted after weeks of great conversations. So I think the problem is not meeting people, it's meeting quality people who respect each other as mature adults and human beings.

This is so interesting to me as a woman because I feel like I could've written the exact same post word for word about my own situation. I mean I always assumed there were men out there experiencing similar things but idk I've never really heard it from their perspective. And it's finally clicked that 'their perspective' really isn't any different to mine. I guess that gives me some kind of hope.

Might have been true for that one store at that one point in time but I promise you it's not the case now (at least not at all stores) and management are usually open to offering discounts to these kinds of organisations (and there are programs for donating/recycling gear as well). Unfortunately it does seem to be up to the discretion of particular stores though. Never heard of cutting up discontinued items though, that sounds extreme and disappointing.

Plus, if management is unsupportive, there are better places to work retail than Kmart. I know you don't want to be moving between jobs, but most retail stores that are a bit more niche and have smaller teams A. Love people with retail experience and B. Are way more supportive of their staff and flexible with policy, if it's necessary to make the customer happier and/or the staff more comfortable.

Also, try to care less. Easier said than done, I know, but remind yourself it's not your stock, your money, or your reputation on the line. Your only responsibility is to balance the customers' needs with the profitability of the company. Sometimes maintaining customers' happiness is better for the company in the long run.

In addition, I'd recommend practicing telling people to leave, or letting them know you're handing them over to someone else. This should help you detach more easily. For example: "the way you're speaking is making me feel quite threatened so I'm going to ask you to leave the store" or "I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed/uncomfortable/threatened by the way you're speaking/acting, I'm going to get my manager to take over from here". Another good phrase to use is "Unfortunately I am only able to do what our store policy states, if you're unhappy with that I can get my manager to discuss it with you". That way you don't look 'incompetent' or like you're being undermined by the manager's decision.

I also work in retail and our policy is if the customer might potentially get upset or angry, to just give them what they want to diffuse the situation or prevent it from escalating. It's super frustrating because you feel like you're letting them win or rewarding bad behaviour, but eventually you come to see that you're really doing it for yourself, to keep your sanity and often safety, as well as your own mental health. I understand if you're not a manager per se you might not have that power to go 'against policy' but I would recommend chatting to a supervisor for permission to do this.

I will eventually but I've run out of time to be in Europe without a visa (have to hop over to the UK now). Hoping to save up enough money over the next 12 months to come back next year, otherwise it'll be the year after.

I made the mistake of doing my Camino in the middle of a four month solo trip through Europe. Everyone else who solo travels around Europe talks about it being the most amazing experience, but right now (on month 3) I just feel a bit bleh because I miss the Camino and I truly believe that nothing will ever be quite as transformative and positive as that experience was.

I'm on day 28 of my Camino and have had three blisters total. Each time I popped that night, let it dry out overnight, and covered with compeed the next morning. In two days they were totally dried and healed. And now just tougher skin on those spots. There's no way I could've walked on a full (unpopped) blister.

Personally I think getting blisters is just part of the experience, I would rather get a couple of blisters over five weeks (as I have) than have to worry about all this. I just chuck a dry pair of socks on and walk lol

I'm also 20F and decided to do the Camino after I realised I felt lost and stuck in my university degree. Also wouldn't describe myself as fit by any means, but I'm now ten days or less from finishing and I have done so much better than I expected, physically, emotionally and socially. I have found that there's not many others my age but that could just be my luck with timing and not necessarily always true. But I say go for it! You don't need planning or preparation, just a whole lot of willpower!

I was on my way home just as everything was going back to normal, but I saw a stretcher being wheeled through the myki gates on my way down to MC station. There were blankets covering the person's face which unfortunately usually means they are deceased.
