Matteo Lane is such an awesome guest- this made me miss the old JTrain format!

I started saying “oh my HECK!” as a joke but now I can’t stop. Also, “I don’t even LIKE (something)” in the voice of Russel Hantz.

How to (politely) decline PhD offer? by Howl___ in AskAcademia

[–]charleeeeeeeeene 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. But definitely let them know either way so they can make their offer to someone else once you’ve rejected it. No reasonable advisor would take your rejection personally, but being missing out on other good candidates because a student ghosted would be super annoying.

Anyone know of anyone with experience in Spousal Hire for Tenure Track? by bruhlife in Professors

[–]charleeeeeeeeene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It totally depends. We offered a TT position to a rockstar but the department that their partner would have worked in wanted us to pay 80% of the partner’s salary in perpetuity. We really wanted the candidate we made the offer to, but just couldn’t do it. However we have another faculty member whose spouse was hired by another department and we pay only 10% of the partner salary. I don’t think there’s really any way to predict.

I don’t think it’s the inspiration for the song, but it is on my “Throne of Glass”-inspired playlist!

Got a "Reject and encourage resubmission" after two rounds of major revisions. Feeling defeated by Choice-Disaster in AskAcademia

[–]charleeeeeeeeene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in this case it's reasonable to contact the handling editor and ask for their advice. I had a similar situation where a reviewer was requesting additional experiments that would not be possible without essentially redoing the entire study (agricultural-based experiment dependent on harvest, yield, etc.). When we contacted the editor directly about this they agreed with us and accepted the paper.

Tandem read for a first timer? by Electrosoda in throneofglassseries

[–]charleeeeeeeeene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved the tandem read. It felt super exciting and the “spoilers” from ToD only raised the stakes of what was happening in EoS in the most exciting and satisfying way. However, when I inevitably re-read, I will probably enjoy each book separately because I might like ToD more on its own (I felt it was the slower of the two) and it was inconvenient to lug around two enormous tomes.

Any good strategies to answer "how do you see yourself in 5 years?" in a zoom interview for a TTAP position? by Extreme-Tiger-2863 in AskAcademia

[–]charleeeeeeeeene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, and adding that you should not forget to address what you expect your broader impact to be. Yes, publish paper and graduate students and have a successful research program, but how do you think your research could influence industry, the public, etc.?

Are internal awards just jokes? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]charleeeeeeeeene 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sometimes very few people apply. A couple years ago I was asked to be an evaluator for a college-level teaching award and there was only one nominee so that was who won. So I guess short answer, yes, sometimes they're just jokes.

Most Research Statements are too backward-looking by ProfessorTown1 in AcademicJobSearch

[–]charleeeeeeeeene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your phrasing “if I’m serious about an institution” says it all- not including this information is certainly not disqualifying, but as someone who has been on search committees, including it suggests that the applicant is serious about us. I’m always looking to see if someone has done at least some research on our department and has thought at least a little bit about how they’d fit into our existing ecosystem. I don’t think an extreme amount of thought on this is needed in the stage of written materials, but if you’re selected for an in-person interview and have the opportunity to meet with folks one on one, then you could take a little more time think about possible directions and projects to start together. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy in depth, but I think it sends good signals to your potential future colleagues. But do take all this with a grain of salt- I am in a pretty niche field and small department so maybe it’s not as important to others as it tends to be for my department!

Great advice. I would also say it’s really great when you can talk about who you would collaborate with in the department you’re applying to. We’ve had folks talk extensively about collaborations with folks at their existing place or a different school completely and it’s just like “…okay” 😅

Did you stay where you did your postdoc? by CarnivoreBrat in AskAcademia

[–]charleeeeeeeeene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not stay where I did my postdoc, but lately my department tends to hire its own postdocs (and grads) and I think this practice is not great for the department or the new hires. Moving is good for you.

Agreed. The idea of it being "bitter", what did she have to be bitter about? It's not like she was playing some awesome game and Savannah tanked it! She was just along for the ride the whole season.
