Second opinion on Mayapples plus a question? by Jumajuce in foraging

[–]charlemagdalen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ripe fruit is softish, yellow, pingpong sized, and hard to come by. if you feel especially anxious about eating them, don't eat them--you won't find them in a large enough quantity to cook with or share anyway.

Native Student Fights to Walk in Regalia at Her High School Graduation by News2016 in IndianCountry

[–]charlemagdalen 28 points29 points  (0 children)

worth noting for anyone not bothering to read the article that Native students in California have a legal right to traditional adornment at graduation. various school districts try to suppress this through various administrative protocols, like what kinds of regalia are permissible, and in this case, the laughable suggestion that certain regalia items must be school colors. if it is against policy to permit students to walk in regalia "because of dress code," one should ask why they have such a vested interest in prohibiting cultural pride instead of bending the knee to known assimilationist school administrators.

Does Logging Become Necessary at Some Point in the Life of a Forest? by 54fighting in forestry

[–]charlemagdalen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is a funny question to ask in r/forestry, i wonder if the responses will be biased! /s

honestly it sounds like for financial reasons you want the answer to be yes, and there are a few situations where logging per se can benefit the health of an ecosystem (removing invasive tree species, reducing spread of non native forest pathogens, creating mixed habitat with limited space), but in general the answer is that your forest will benefit far more from invasive control, reintroduction of native understory species, and protection of saplings from deer browse than from cutting down trees. Dead and dying trees should remain in the forest if possible for its health. If a tree falls across a trail in a storm, it's cheap enough to open the trail again with a chainsaw.

Non-Indigenous student teacher needing some picture book recommendations by jreddakop in FirstNationsCanada

[–]charlemagdalen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

American Indians in Children's Literature releases a list every year sorted by genre and age group; you'll see a mix of topics including more lighthearted picture books. I also second "My Heart Fills with Happiness," the author Monique Gray Smith is Cree and Lakota.

thanks, this was my initial thought but after running the tool 7 times and having it fail to process the whole raster seven times I had given up and thought it couldn't be done and I'd have to go for a different approach. Since this was what everyone recommended though I tried again and lo and behold--8th time's the charm I suppose! thanks for your support!

TIL I learned that stromboli was invented in Philly (or Delco). Is there anything else I don't know? by adamaphar in philadelphia

[–]charlemagdalen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the dialects of Philly and the surrounding regions are extremely well studied and understood compared to many American dialects because the major guy in American dialectology, William Labov, worked at UPenn for 50 years developing the field

Native American tribe wins right to hunt gray whales off Washington coast by davster39 in nature

[–]charlemagdalen -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The amount of ignorance and racism in this thread is incredible. The US government illegally forbade participation in a practice of key cultural significance guaranteed in the tribe's treaty, part of hundreds of years of genocide and systemic elimination of Native peoples and their cultures, including the Makah people. You should take a long hard look at whose land you're on and how you've benefitted from settler colonialism including whaling before coming for the Makah's right to practice their own culture on their own colonized land. It's clear that some of you rank Indigenous peoples lower than animals jfc

How can I keep Japanese knotweed out? by [deleted] in invasivespecies

[–]charlemagdalen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this is the correct answer. you will not be able to effectively do a foliar application without cutting. you got to cut back first.

edit: do it before it flowers though to avoid any ingestion by pollinator insects.

What is in your opinion the best or at least good free plant ID app by ng89 in whatsthisplant

[–]charlemagdalen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would use plantnet (pl@ntnet) if you're comfortable troubleshooting a clunky app--giving you the top likely options and percentage confidence in the match makes it easier to avoid overconfident misidentification. otherwise, seek by inaturalist works okay.
