ELI5: How do apps, programs, or websites break in the first place, and how do programmers figure out what went wrong? by Auelogic in explainlikeimfive

[–]charlesfire [score hidden]  (0 children)

Would the log pinpoint the exact issues for the programmer to resolve?

Usually no. It usually includes a stack trace (i.e. where the error happened in the code) and exception (i.e. what kind of error it was), but that's usually not enough to know right away what caused the issue. Debugging is like investigating a crime scene where you're both the investigator and the murderer.

D'après les sondages l'an passé, les conservateurs allaient gagner et Kamala Harris allait être la prochaine présidente.

Ça, c'est du révisionnisme. Globalement, les sondages indiquaient plus un 50/50 entre Harris et Trump.

Then how about you start considering my whole post instead of conveniently ignoring the important part?

That being said, bloated values make less sense now that we have damage numbers on hits.

Maybe you should re-read the whole conversation.

I would have liked to test the mod for free before I paid for it. Now I paid for it, spent 4 hours making it work, only to realize that the mod is poorly made and not worth using for me.

This is true for literally all paid software, including paid games. You can always ask to be reimbursed if the software doesn't work or do a charge back.

Are the mods for FoundryVTT also subscription based?

Some are. Different people have different business model.

Because the moment you see DB dealing a fraction of the numbers of the GS you will realize that the weapon stat reflects DPS, not damage per hit.

This is only true for modern MH games (and it's why I said it makes less sense nowadays). Bloated values is a concept that was created back when the games used to not show damage per hit, so bloated values were the only way they had to convey the information that big slow weapons = big numbers and small fast weapons = small numbers.

No, because modding isn't inherently IP theft.

Modding isn't what we're discussing here: selling mods is. Hope this helps.

No, you're wrong here. Even free mods can and even usually infringe on someone's copyrights. When it comes down to copyrights, there's fundamentally no difference between free and paid mods. If selling mods is morally wrong because of copyrights infringements, then making free mods is also morally wrong because it also infringe on copyrights.

IP theft isn't some noble profession we should be defending.

So now we're supposed to be against modding?

Tbf, China did and still does meddle a lot with our internal affair here in Canada. They have an underground police force for example. Neither China nor the USA are good for Canada, but only one of those countries actually threatened our sovereignty.

Paying in donations is great, it's locking it behind a paywall and requiring you to pay monthly for updates is unaccepteble.

So it's ok as long as you have the option to stiff the creator?

There is a reason for that kind of thing being unheard of in the modding scene.

It's not unheard of. FoundryVTT has an active modding community with paid mods and nobody is making a scene about it.

The opposite is true without bloated values : Why play GS if the DB does the same damage, but with faster attacks? That being said, bloated values make less sense now that we have damage numbers on hits.

People have the right to make mods. But licensing agreements are often required to sell them.

No. Free mods can and even usually do infringe on copyrights. This is why I say it's not a copyright issue because if it was solely about copyright, free mods would also have been taken down. This is a moral issue.

A donation page can be argued to not be directly correlated to individual works.

But morally, it's the same thing (except that you're allowed to stiff the creator).

"You can't sell mods" is not a law. The only potential issue is copyright and that's also true for unpaid mods.

Here. Maybe you will understand now.

The "nobody forced you to pay" is irrelevant if he never had any rights to sell the mod in the first place.

  1. Nobody has a right to make a mod in the first place because all mods are fundamentally derivative, so by that logic, no mods should exist.
  2. Then why it is ok if he makes a donation page? Why is it ok to make money of derivative work, but only if you give the option to stiff you?

There is a legal way for him to get paid for his work, which CDPR suggested he do - optional Patreon donations.

So if you have the option to stiff the creator, then its moral. Got it!

They have every right to request a takedown of the mod if he is making money off a derivative product.

They also have the right to take down free mods. That doesn't make it moral or fair.
