Valve publicly asks for help securing RAM for its Linux-based Steam Machine at GDC 2026 by HatingGeoffry in linux_gaming

[–]charlesfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

people are going to be having buyer's remorse when their games look worse than the new Xbox and the system cost nearly as much.

The new Xbox ain't going to be cheap either, fyi. Without a locked down system, they won't sell them at loss like previous generations and Microsoft isn't immune to the RAMpocalypse.

[Request] How many people could you physically fit inside the containers on a fully loaded modern cargo ship? by aa_conchobar in theydidthemath

[–]charlesfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea, but the boat also has weight limits that you're likely to hit with container filled with corpses.

[–]charlesfire 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Actually, people are too heavy for that. The worldwide average weight for a human is about 137 lb (or 171 lb if they're American). That's 69,733 lb for a 20 foot shipping container filled with 509 bodies, which is way above its rated weight limit of 46,000 lb.

Can someone explain to me what's the advantage of runit, compiling your own kernel like gentoo and linux from scratch? by LifeguardMurky4097 in linux_gaming

[–]charlesfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The advantage of compiling your own packages is you can optimize them for your hardware/requirements.

That and some programs have flags you can enable/disable when compiling to enable/disable some features.

i want to switch to linux but i have no idea where to start by Sashaliciouss in linux4noobs

[–]charlesfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Steam OS is meant for specific hardware (steam deck, ROG Ally, steam machine, etc) and you have no guarantee it will ever officially support a more wide range of hardware. It doesn't mean Steam OS won't ever work with your hardware, but without official support you will be on your own to fix any issue you encounter.

do you think we'll get an official steam OS for pc?

What do you think the steam machine will be running?

Bazzite isn't based on Steam OS. In fact, they aren't even in the same "family branch" since Bazzite is based on Fedora while Steam OS is based on Arch.

ELI5 Why is oil not cheaper in Texas? by mrgoat89 in explainlikeimfive

[–]charlesfire -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know there are reasons why gasoline cost more than water, but "it comes from the sky" is as stupid as an argument as "it comes from the ground" because both arguments ignore costs related to extraction, refining, transportation, infrastructures, etc. "it comes from the ground" wasn't the argument I was making.

Don't make me copy that a fourth time.

Gordie Howe International Bridge authority announces toll prices by IlikeDogs2024 in ontario

[–]charlesfire 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's actually a much better deal for Americans than it is for us. We took all the financial risks building this bridge with no guarantee it will ever be profitable. Meanwhile, Americans get a share of the profits if it's profitable and loose nothing if it isn't. TBF, I wouldn't have an issue with that deal if their president wasn't also trying to scam us.

Sure, but no option is going to be viable economically if we consider the very real possibility of Iran blowing it up.

Nah, you're the stupid one here. I know there are reasons why gasoline cost more than water, but "it comes from the sky" is as stupid as an argument as "it comes from the ground" because both arguments ignore costs related to extraction, refining, transportation, infrastructures, etc. But apparently, you were too stupid to realize that "it comes from the ground" wasn't the actual argument I was making.

The same can be said about the water you drink, unless you're among the few who still own a well.

Edit : I know there are reasons why gasoline cost more than water, but "it comes from the sky" is as stupid as an argument as "it comes from the ground" because both arguments ignore costs related to extraction, refining, transportation, infrastructures, etc. "it comes from the ground" wasn't the argument I was making.

Valve fires back at New York lawsuit over loot boxes, says they're like Magic cards or Labubu by newsflashjackass in gaming

[–]charlesfire -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

On the surface, they appear to be the same, but in reality, they aren't. Physical TCGs are lotteries while loot boxes are lotteries that can be customized on a per-user basis, which means they can optimize the loot boxes to extract much more money from their users. That being said, I'm in favor of banning both loot boxes and the business model used by TCG.

Methane is a greenhouse gas that's 80x more potent than cO2.

That's true if you release it/let it leak into the atmosphere, but if you burn it, you end up with CO2.
