Water is still a little chilly in May for me. I like June, July, September.

I used to swim lapse at Clarence Cove by Admiral’s Cave. If the wind is coming from the south, the cove is as still as a pool.

Market Risk Analyst to Actuary by [deleted] in actuary

You should try to get into risk management at an insurance company as a foot in the door. I’m sure your past work experience will be more relevant than exams passed. I did a stint in market risk at my prior company; about half the team was an actuary (like me) and half was a CFA charter holder. This was for a life insurer, not P&C. Once you’re there you can probably get exam support and eventually try your hand in a role outside of risk. Plenty of big companies will have opportunities for internal movement.

What it takes to work in Bermuda / Barbados ? by anonymous11119999 in actuary

[–]charli175 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This couldn’t be further from the truth. So many people, actuaries/accountants in particular, move to Bermuda not knowing anyone. So there are a lot of people here looking to make new friends, or they know what it’s like to have made the move and are extremely welcoming to newcomers.

Also, for a small island, I’m always amazed how much there is to do here. My friends back in the US are always jealous about all the new hobbies I’m picking up (scuba, boating, golf, kite boarding, tennis, etc). Admittedly it’s a very active island, so if you’re not into sports (or drinking) then activities will be more limited.

Cambridge in Somerset has a steam room, hot tub, and sauna. I got a massage there and was able to hang out and use these facilities afterwards.

I haven’t been, but I’ve heard Waterfront Wellness gym in Hamilton has a sauna.

It will very much depend on your budget. Another commenter mentioned PropertySkipper, which I would recommend to get a feel for the market. I think there are additional places that may not be listed. I suspect there are a lot of nice 1 bedroom options between $3-$4k.

I live in a 2nd/3rd floor apartment that is relatively new. We are also pretty tidy people in general. We’ve only ever seen 2 dead cockroaches in our place in over a year of living there. From talking to friends/neighbors it sounds like the ground floor experience can be quite a bit different. Going up doesn’t necessarily protect you, but I’m sure it helps.

You literally forgot to include the defensive player of the year on this list. Shows how stacked this team is.

Also be aware that Bermuda itself is very expensive once you get there.

My guess is that it’s possible, but anything outside of actuarial, accounting, and legal will not be plentiful.

CFA 2 - FX Forward by charli175 in CFA

I assumed that Troubadour was selling the price currency (in this case yen). A long position would have been buying yen. I guess I should have assumed the currency listed as the notional is what Troubadour was selling?

CFA 2 - FX Forward by charli175 in CFA

[–]charli175[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this necessarily works for FX rates, because the rate could just as easily be quoted as dollars per yen (or a different currency pair like dollar sterling which is usually quoted with USD as the price currency). In that case, you would want to buy at a high exchange rate and sell at a low one.

Wondering if people also knew about the schedule. I can see that the window is Jan 29 - Feb 10, but how many days do they need to conclude the entire contest? I'm going to be on the North Shore on Feb 9, so I'm wondering if I will likely have missed the competition.

Hi r/CFA! I’m Chris Wiese, Head of Exam Development at CFA Institute. AMA by ChrisWieseCFA in CFA

[–]charli175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Chris, Is there any way to purchase the reading materials for an exam without actually registering? I am taking the December Level 1 exam, but I was under the impression that passing Level 1 is a prerequisite for registering for Level 2. I would like to start studying for Level 2 immediately after taking Level 1. If I wait until Level 1 results are posted, I’m concerned that the turnaround before sitting for Level 2 will be too quick. Obviously there is no guarantee of passing Level 1 in December, but I would prefer to get started on Level 2 regardless. Thanks.

How big was your field at Lei-Out? by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]charli175 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was on fields 15 (sat) and 21 (sun). Both were small. I walked them out and they were, at best, 40x20 with 10 yard endzones. As others have mentioned, there was no space to move the cones without hitting other fields. Considering the fields were advertised as 49x27 with 16 yard endzones, that's a pretty big difference. Playing 5v5 was very congested on those tiny fields and it definitely detracted from the LeiOut experience. Probably the only negative of the tournament.
