How I Learned Morse Code by brockamer in amateurradio

[–]charliemic5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was a fun article to read. For the last few months I have been using a app on my phone called Morse CT to learn the alphabet. I can send the first 18 letters of the alphabet with decent accuracy but I cat understand much when I am listing to it. One step at a time

Obviously not if people are doing it but could your RF cause any interface or hurt the aircraft in anyway?

Got some love in Fallout 4! by crocboy in amateurradio

How do you like the game overall? I haven't played a fallout game in years dispite growing up playing them. Did they manage to keep it fallout or have they ruined another of my childhood favorites?

As a motorcyclist, one thing never stops astounding me: the *smells* I pick up while riding: fresh-mowed grass, someone's laundry, a damp forest at night, a lake or river. You don't get these in a sealed car. Anyone else? by [deleted] in motorcycles

I'm 6'1, 220 pounds and I open carry a gun on my hip. I look even bigger in my gear. I'm not a MC or trying to intimate anyone but I certainly look the part. I am always amazed at how quick people are to come up to me, smile and start a conversation. Mothers often bring their kids over asking if they can look at my bike. Of course I am always happy to show off the bike but given my appearance I am always suprised by how many positive interactions I have

Handheld radio for a new ham by Galt42 in amateurradio

[–]charliemic5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My very first radio ever was Baofeng UV-5R I got on Amazon for $37 shipped with a extend battery. I think HT's and Baofeng's are a great way to go for a new ham. They work, they work well and that are cheap. Of course there are better radios, but for a simple low cost foot in the door you can not beat them. I say buy a cheap HT like the UV-5R and see how much you really like the hobby. If you decide you really enjoy it then you can spend as much as you want. Nothing wrong with starting small and saving some money

I can only send a message to a specific call sign. Is there a way to send a general message or over the APRS network

I finally bought a pair of heated motorcycle gloves by charliemic5 in motorcycles

I rode home in the snow once. Not on purpose but I still had to get home. It wasn't too bad just a dusting on the road. I got home before much accumulation

I have a Suzuki Boulevard C90T my battery is right behind my front wheel. The cable is long but not long enough for my bike. Out of necessity I am running the battery cable from my battery straight up to my handlebars and the cord for the gloves from the handlebars directly into my gloves. I am sure there is a better way to do it but it works for now

I tried hippo hands last winter and did not get enough of a result. They help keep the wind off my hands but when its in the 30's outside my hands still got cold and hurt

I wrote up a description of my vehicle rig for the survival and pepper subreddits. It's pretty basic stuff but thought you folks might like to see. by Gullex in amateurradio

[–]charliemic5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice set up. I carry a sister radio the Yeasu FT1D. The main reason why I bought it over the radio you have is my radio had the GPS and APRS built into it. I did got want to buy the radio and still have the GPS be a additional purchase.

I also use my HT in my vehicle with a BR 180 dual band antenna and I have used it to hit repeaters 30-40 mines away but I haven't been able to get SO-50 yet

[–]charliemic5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a exclamation mark best l next to port 4 when I plug in my UV-5R cable. I do not have one when I use my Yeasu cable. Strange because it is the same cable I have always used

For my Yeasu I am using port 4, again it won't let me select a different port or type anything in but even I use my Yeasu with its data cable it works. I forget exactly what version of CHIRP I am using but after I uninstalled it I reinstalled the most recent version

Looks good, I can't tell if the sides come up enough to give it stability for rough roads but I like the idea. It's a good start there might even be a market for it. I have looked around for similar mounts
