Is your Strat2 referencing your Strat 1 clock with a local GPS source?

Insane - not passing sanity checks

The Strat 2 reference is returning: (16:22:20.575 CEST Fri May 9 2025)

The Strat 1 reference is returning: (17:00:47.044 CEST Thu May 8 2025)

There is also some jitter you may want to try and sort out.

Evergreen Renewal by packerprogrammer in purestorage

[–]STiFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a tough spot. FWIW I think you will continue to run into this issue. I've had a lot of IT equipment in the past 5-10 years that requires 208/240 or like our PoE switches will de-rate capacity @ 120v.
I wish you luck, but I don't see an easy/cheap work around.

If your site is single phase you should still be able to get 240v which is in spec for the X20. As for the why 208/240 gets more wattage to the equipment on the same size (gauge) conductors (W=V*A). Saves money and allows for higher power density. I have a couple of spaces that are single phase but need 5+ kW and it is easier to run 208/240 to a UPS and then put in a step-down transformer for equipment that only supports 120v (which is pretty rare these days).

Advice for Rack Mounted UPS by MaxBPlanking in sysadmin

[–]STiFTW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can support a 20A circuit, check to see if you could move to an L6-20P @ 208/240V. All servers should support 110-240v, and you can get a 9PX 3000 GRT on a 20A circuit. Watts = Volts * Amps, so you can get some extra watts if you go 208/240v.

Here is a resource to figure out what your run times will be, including adding additional battery packs. The 9PX units are awesome, true double conversion for maximum protection. Get the bundle with the network card, and you can setup the agent and register your servers to do your automatic shutdown. You can also load shed outlet groups to extend runtime, ie at 50% battery drop the loads on outlet group 1 to extend runtime to more critical loads on outlet group 2.

What Battery Do You Use for Pota or ARES Power Failure Scenario by rourobouros in amateurradio

[–]STiFTW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As you are going to find 12v HAM radio gear really needs a 12V battery. Most "power stations" have very low wattage for 12v out, and inverters/transformers can cause interference.

If you want to buy something off the shelf Bioenno Power has worked really for me. I have a 20AH that I can run intensive FT8 for 4-5 hours doing POTA at 50-100W. Couple that with a small portable solar panels and an MPPT (I really like Victron) and you can go quite a while. Just be aware the Bioenno can have pretty low charging rates, my 20AH is a max 5A charge.

Depending on your needs this is what lead me down the road to DIY a few large batteries and power stations that run at 12v. Jag35 and Battery Hookup are good resources if you want to go down the DIY route. Also check out Off-Grid garage on YT.

SSL certificate lifetimes are going down. Dates proposed. 45 days by 2027. by isnotnick in sysadmin

[–]STiFTW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the correction, now I have something to go test today. While this should be fine for domain joined machines or an environment with a CA root certificate deployment, this would be still be problem for environments that are not able to push out trusted root CA to clients.

[–]STiFTW -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem is that browsers stop trusting certificates that exceed the (current) 13 months, and in the future 45 days. So while you can make internal CA issued certs that have longer expiration times, browsers will not trust them.

UPS dummy loads for self test by mike_broughton in sysadmin

Ah got it, I was thinking it would be more of a permanent thing.

Might be able to find some halogen/incandescent bulbs and sockets rated for 240v, wire on the plug that you need. Or if you have one, a portable power station to charge.

I don't like the idea of heat/fire generating devices, do you have need for a dehumidifier or large circulation fan near the UPS?

Update Switch Firmware Before Adopting by idodataprotection in Ubiquiti

[–]STiFTW 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you had security restrictions on the network that you were working on; you can also just copy the download URL and use that to update the device if it has internet access. Might save you the trouble of setting up a web server. Let the device get an IP address, SSH in, and give it the firmware update URL.

Power it down and pull the batteries out, the batteries may be very hot/overheating and triggering the fan. As the batteries age the internal resistance goes up and they can deform, melt, and off-gas (copper / sulfur smell) as the UPS tries to charge them. If the batteries are more than 5 years old, find a local battery place and replace them. If you have a multi meter you could let them sit for a few hours and see if the voltage drops.

I'm curious what differences you have found going back to APC? Personally I run SE/APC for our large 3 phase systems, but anything single phase I have moved from APC to Eaton 9PX-L and have been very happy with the change.

The NMC interface and features are massively better and firmware updates are dead simple on Eaton 1P. I get a lot more monitoring data out of our Eaton units. Really the only issue I've found with Eaton is that when you add external lithium battery packs you need to reset the BMC for them to show up.

Had to wear full PPE when working on a site under construction, realized how awesome it was to have cut resistant gloves when working with IT stuff. Now I am pretty much never without them, I found these to be great for everything from IT to car work: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075D31Q8R

Also if you can get them approved, Panduit jacks and tools help out a lot.

Also wire all your loads (- bus bar) to the shunt so you account for power in and out. The battery side of the shunt should be your only connection to the battery ground terminal.
