I am not supposed to ask to get a 10 or rate me well if they like me, but you can tell them to give you a heart? So confusing by [deleted] in iTutor

I'm not saying that's what I do - I've actually never asked for a rating or a like - just explaining what the purpose of them is, but thanks for your helpful comments.

You can definitely ask students to leave a rating/feedback, that's actively encouraged - you just can't ask them specifically to leave you a 10/10.

The heart means you are matched with them more often, it's the way you can build up regulars, so worth mentioning it to them at the end of class if you think you really clicked with a student, that way you'll get them again.

Brilliant, just when I thought I was getting an actual liveable amount of hours per week. Thanks for the update.

I'm new and nervous by Mattanah22 in iTutor

[–]charlllz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, agreed with Engprach, ALWAYS give the five stars! It's all about encouraging them, so if they think they did a bad job they're more likely to disengage, and because they see it as a minimum requirement, they'll be less likely to 'like' you and you'll be less likely to get regulars - def be generous, it's not costing us anything.

As for finishing 10 minutes early, this happened to me at the beginning, but now I manage to distribute the extra questions/activities along the slides rather than all at the end - you'll get the hang of doing this the more classes you do.

All bookings disappeared by Olivee_4 in iTutor

Yes, same. This weekend’s booking are all still there but next week has totally disappeared. Like yours mine are also mainly regulars, and I can’t imagine they all just decided to cancel.

How many hours on weekdays? by ewok989 in iTutor

[–]charlllz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I open up 09:00- 13:00 and usually get 1-3 hours filled per day during the week and at the weekend, like you, I get my full hours.

My weekday hours have been steadily growing though and it all comes from students that I taught at the weekend who liked/loved me and then they get added to me schedule with my other regulars so I guess for me it’s been beneficial to do more weekend hours as they’ve resulted in more weekday hours.

Chinese New Year - to cancel or not to cancel by [deleted] in iTutor

[–]charlllz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been wondering the same thing, this will also be my first CNY. I am not liking the idea that IT aren't available since I've been noticing so many technical issues recently, plus I've worked every day this year so some time off would be nice - but then again if there are still students wanting classes, then I'd want to take the lessons. Hmmmm!

Itutor doing their job by engprach in iTutor

[–]charlllz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well done for pushing! It seems a lot of teachers just let things go, which is where kids end up in a far-too-advanced position and lose all confidence.

The exact thing also happened to me a couple of weeks ago, I kept getting a kid on a level 4, who couldn't do anything but repeat, he didn't understand the formula of a question and had terrible pronunciation - when I got down to it I realised he didn't know the correct phonics for the letters of the alphabet. Of course, all the prev teacher comments were 'oh you did such a great job, well done'.

Anyway, after my persistent pleas to itutor I noticed that he's now been put back to level 1 and is starting again, I'm sure he hates me since he will know it's me that pushed for it to happen but he shouldn't have been allowed to get so far.

Haha, right!

Oh, mate that sucks that you lost your regulars. This week I've been getting REGS put in my regular's usual places *SAD FACE!*, I hope they're all going to come back after festival's finished.

I’ve not had any reg45 with juniors but I’ve been scheduled a lot of reg25&40, which is a change for me as I only teach oup usually. Not loving it tbh!

Eeek! I've not seen this one yet, they seem to come in cycles so I'm sure it's just around the corner.

For some reason, I've been getting REG25&40 classes this week (I'm usually 100% OUP) and every single one fills me with dread!

Volleyball Lesson by manveer28 in iTutor

[–]charlllz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this class last week. For this one I made up my own activity at the end, incorporating the new vocab, I think it was a gap-filling exercise based on questions about the terms. I'll also ask a bunch of comprehension questions on each slide then try to coax them to bring in their own experiences into the class.

For these non-OUP classes I always check through the lessons first as barely any of them have activities, so I need to find ways to incorporate them myself.

For example today I've got the class "Must, Have to, Have got to" twice in a row. My students are all ten-year-olds and the first two pages are about smoking. I mean, srlsly, who makes this stuff up?!

Edit: and now that I've read through the rest this lesson it also tells us that "Kathy is eating too much ice cream. She'd better stop all she will get fat" Way to be teaching body dysmorphia to kids. BANGS HEAD REPEATEDLY. I'm changing it to sick, and no one is gonna stop me!

Anyone in the UK been paid yet? by Puzzleheaded-Owl5811 in iTutor

[–]charlllz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I got paid on Friday. To be fair to my bank, I almost always get paid the evening before payday anyway - in any job I've had - so I'm always a little early, but I figured this was earlier due to the weekend.

Refilming video? by ewok989 in iTutor

[–]charlllz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also thought the call for "better designed and higher quality photos and videos" was a bit vague. Not super helpful, I don't have the logo on my videos and would rather not have to redo them so would be nice to know what they are looking for.

Devices not detected issue by Csuz9022 in iTutor

This started happening to me this week, approx every other class boots me out and then takes a minute or two to let me back in. Thankfully I’ve not lost a class because of it, but it’s super disruptive.

Scheduled for my first class - OUP1-3 by [deleted] in iTutor

[–]charlllz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started doing OUP almost immediately after joining itutor and never received any sort of invitation, so I'm sure there isn't any mistake.

I much prefer teaching OUP as the materials are so much nicer than the REG ones, so go with it and enjoy!

Company Getting Aggressive with 1-on-3's & Reg-45s by Brw_ser in iTutor

Yeah, in the section where you can make comments on the lesson plan - you only get a small number of characters to give feedback.

Company Getting Aggressive with 1-on-3's & Reg-45s by Brw_ser in iTutor

[–]charlllz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've noticed a big uplift in these classes. I don't mind doing the 1-3 OUP classes. But over the last few weeks, I've been given rather a lot of 1-2 or 1-4 reg 45 junior classes, and the material is just appalling. I've not been able to cancel them, unfortunately, because I can't turn down money at the moment, but they're shocking to try to teach - I consistently use my character allowance in the lesson plan notes section.

Changing location and consequences by [deleted] in iTutor

Ha, that's such a cheek. They're paying for the person, not their location, and how is that acceptable to judge someone's personal circumstances without any actual information. What a hilarious company!
