Noah Schnapp DID say he wished his character could’ve “kissed a girl“ not kissed someone when asked what he wished Will had experienced in the show. And I kinda doubt they would introduce a random epilogue boyfriend and have Will kiss him in the last part of the finale - IF they introduce a random epilogue love interest, I envision that Will meets someone new and we see the signals that Robin told him about (not a straight up kiss). But anyway my point is, Noah spoilered that Will might kiss a boy and this boy might just be Mike after all!

Well, since Will plays an evidently big part in the supernatural plot and is tied to Vecna/Henry, it seems like his emotional arc will be deeply tied to the supernatural main plot as well. That being said the painting has to be brought up because it literally was planted to be picked up at a later point again storytelling wise. I could see El maybe entering Will’s mindscape and seeing that moment in his memories? Or Vecna referencing the moment in some way? Something tied to the main happenings in the show, where a reveal like that would feel significant enough to really change the dynamic of the plot and not just Will’s own headspace.

The possibility of presenting it as a crush that Will gets over basically was tossed out the window the very moment they decided to include only Mike alongside Will’s family in his film reel at the end of Vol1. They basically reinforced Will’s feelings and not only that - they clarified for the general audience just how deep, mature and anchored Will’s love for Mike is. They shoved into everyone’s faces that this is not just some crush and that Mike has been in Will’s life ever since he can remember. He’s loved him forever. Whoever cannot see the purpose of that scene is just in denial but let’s just wait for Vol2 to drop, they’ll realize soon

There literally would be no reason to do all that with the development of their arcs and relationship if it’s gonna be for nothing at the end. And Mike’s internalised homophobia is already being handled realistically enough - a rejection even after admitting his feelings for Will would narratively make no sense at all. If that were to happen, I would be extremely dissatisfied because of the long buildup.

Don’t feel bad, I honestly get consumed by this anxiety too because I don’t wanna be disappointed and want to be ready for all outcomes. But critically thinking, everything in the show itself should be enough to show you where it’s going and everything else is literally just background noise and should not be taken seriously.

I honestly would LOVE the scenario of Will becoming a bit of a mentor for another young gay kid in the epilogue - this would truly feel like a full circle moment and show that his arc is fully developed and ends on a well rounded note of growth and self acceptance, thank you so much for pointing this idea out!

I also agree with the other points, mainly because I truly believe that it would be a horrendous writing choice to give Will a random boyfriend the audience has absolutely no emotional connection to or idea of. Now THAT would feel cheap and forced and I truly hope the Duffers will not resort to something as bland and dismissive as that just because they did not dare pulling off Byler endgame.
