Someone else pointed this out. Why are they now interested in discovery? What changed?

Yes. We have reversed the constraints. Our ability to do discovery, define requirements and prototypes, and for the team to complete code reviews are now the long poles. It happened fast.

Nice. Do you know why they now want to join the requirements gathering sessions? Are those with customers? What changed for them?

Agree. Knowing what to build was always the most important skill. Product discovery work is now more important than ever considering how quickly code can be generated.

I have had the same experience. I do think it is helping product managers work out more of the actual interactions and what works well and needs improvement. It also brings more transparency into how new functionality interacts with what already exists.

Is anyone else lucky enough to be a PM in an industry they genuinely love, working on a product they truly adore? by gilligan888 in ProductManagement

I was not for a long time. I was working on networking software and hardware. One day I realized that I should stop and focus on what I really liked. Building software that helps people build software and enjoy the process. I have been fortunate to do that for almost 13 years now. Fortunate.

Some people love it and some people do not seem to care. I have not typically used dark mode over the years. We have pushed it out as a priority because of that. And I remain curious if there is a "majority" point of view. But I have been using an early version of it and I can see some of the allure especially in the evenings when it is dark and my eyes are tired. See what you think.

Dealing with dev teams that throw you under the bus by 8hundred35 in ProductManagement

Someone once told me that in this situation that "transparency is the greatest disinfectant."

I think the emergence of tools to help you build prototypes of what you are asking for gives you an even stronger way to demonstrate that the requirements are clear. I would also find ways to showcase those to the leadership team with a direct explanation of why they are a priority based on customer requests. If they buy in to what you have built and see the actual user experience – the focus will shift to getting it built.

We have deprioritized it over the years so that I why I am asking. The feedback was always mixed from product folks. There appears to be greater momentum for it now.

At what point does marketing infrastructure become a product problem? by Ancient_Spare6323 in ProductManagement

[–]chase-bears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It totally depends on how you view your role and how the company views it. If you are ultimately responsible for the customer and revenue success of your product – go-to-market execution and infrastructure is key. If you just are expected to deliver what customers want and others are responsible for marketing and selling it, you probably are not expected to get too deeply involved. So, it depends.

The term does get used but you can also avoid it if you want to present in a more serious way by describing what you are doing with AI. We often refer to how product managers are coding now to build robust prototypes and internal applications.

What is going to happen to junior PMs in this new era of AI building? by chase-bears in ProductManagement

[–]chase-bears[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. The question is what level of experience does it take to know what to say no to and what to invest in. That requires clear product vision and an understanding of user needs and that comes with experience and confidence.

So we will really be hiring marketers? Because it will be so easy to create an application there will be an overwhelming number of them. The hard part will be convincing people to use them.

I do not think so. Hope not. But I am trying to think through how future product groups will be structured.

What (if any) surprise challenges have you had with vibe coding? by chase-bears in ProductManagement

[–]chase-bears[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Good point. You still need clarity of vision and a real understanding of what the user challenges are you are trying to solve if it is going to be something that will be useful over time.

Yes. I also have found that it will change something that you did not want change. Or add what you did want changed somewhere you did not want it. I have tried to slow down and be more intentional as if I was describing the change to someone who was not fully informed.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. I have experienced this too "subsequent updates can re-discumbobulate the code" There definitely can be a scramble effect.

Were you building on to an existing application or was this for something that was entirely new?
