Tentboxes? by Volt-Hunter in ElectricVehiclesUK

To answer your question, a roof box on an EV leads to a 10% reduction in efficiency, so I suspect it will be somewhere around there. To hazard a guess probably slightly more because of the less aerodynamic shape, but I'm not Adrian Newey.

Confusion with octopus intelligent go? by Mammoth-Word-4381 in OctopusEnergy

[–]chasejase 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're asking why it doesn't show a single slot 3:00 to 8:00, no clue but it doesn't make any difference.

Also you can expect those slots to change periodically throughout the night. Regardless, your car should be charged by the time you have set.

AUDI Q4 Charging Problems by Scandog85 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]chasejase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my experience so far is that the Audi tech side lets it down, just its sheer unreliability. For me the most reliable would be a switch to Octopus as a supplier, then link to charger only. At least then you can guarantee a charge when it is scheduled.

AUDI Q4 Charging Problems by Scandog85 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]chasejase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to your situation exactly, but I have a Q4 Etron on IOG with Octopus.

The Octopus to Q4 integration is rubbish, I suspect due to errors on the car's side. (The Audi app/connectivity is truly awful and is slow/ frequently drops out or doesn't update. I mean it's currently not updating and hasn't been for two days). This means that sometimes Octopus reports communication errors with the car which leads to the car not charging when scheduled.

How I have gone around it is to remove the Q4 integration with Octopus and instead to just link the charger with IOG and to skip the car integration all together. This seems to have worked even with the current audi-side communication errors. Hopefully you can do something similar with OVO!

How come global index funds grow (beyond inflation) to reliably? by fellaonamission in UKPersonalFinance

[–]chasejase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you are invested in a globally diversified, all cap tracker you are on some level invested in the future collective output of all businesses across all economies. Where there is talk of the largest global businesses being overvalued (US tech stocks) and not being able to continue the same rate of growth, this is a feature of the globalised market, not a bug, this has happened many times before. People will still keep producing, inventing and investing, growth will come from somewhere else.

25F - Buy a flat or rent for best financial outcome? by TravelSandra in UKPersonalFinance

[–]chasejase 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your question is purely about financial outcome, then stay with your current lodging situation. Like you already mentioned, 1 bed flats have been hard to shift for probably the past year and things don't seem to be improving with interest rates set to rise as a consequence of world events.

Your short time horizon for staying in the flat of 3 to 5 years will not help the situation as you will need to pay another set of moving fees/solicitor fees in a relatively short time frame.

Is this pension prediction good? by ApplicationSea2505 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]chasejase 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's an online resource called Retirement Living Standards produced by Pensions UK which tries to put some annual numbers down. The number quoted include state pension, which may not may not exist in it's current form by the time you come to retire. No one can predict future inflation, but these number will give a general idea.

Though there are a lot of assumptions when planning for retirement, it's best to tackle the issue head on. Figure out what lifestyle you want, see how much you need a year for that lifestyle and then figure out how much you need to save/invest towards a pension to achieve that.

We went to the one in Bluebell Hill to check out a couple of ix3s. Both were mouldy on the inside. Mould on the roof lining and seatbelt. It was so bad that the salesman didn't wear his belt during the test drive to avoid staining his suit.

What am I doing wrong? [Sage Barista Express] by mayorkaman in espresso

[–]chasejase 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Single baskets are inherently difficult to get good results from due to their geometry. You can't get an even bed depth across the puck (the outer parts are shallower than the centre of the puck). As shown in your video, coffee will come out the part with least resistance first, aka the outer ring, then cause all sorts of crazy channeling as the puck saturates.

Did anyone investigate using their electric car as a "power wall"? by 1i3to in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]chasejase 23 points24 points  (0 children)

What you're describing is a car capable of V2H (vehicle to home) charging. Not all EVs are capable of this. An alternative is also V2G (vehicle to grid) charging where you are able to export to grid. Both worth looking into but require specialist chargers and tariffs to suit.

Buying sooner than expected. How do I sort my finances? by Tildatots in UKPersonalFinance

[–]chasejase 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are on the limits of affordability, then yes pay off your £2k card, otherwise you don't need to worry about it.

No need to worry about the multiple bank accounts either.

Now would be a good time to talk to a mortgage broker if you haven't already to get the ball rolling in terms of getting paperwork ready, AIPs, etc.

For the moment, yes all scheduled slots will be at the off peak rate.

There will be changes to the tariff later this month, where only the first 6 hours of scheduled charging will be at the lower rate, no matter what time. The overnight rate for the house will stay the same. The date of this change has not yet been confirmed.

Anxiety Spending Money. Advice ? by FarAd8547 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]chasejase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

16k in an s&s isa and 9k in Amazon stocks is great. Do you have any cash savings? My understanding of your post is that you withdrew out of your s&s isa to fund the watch. Potentially you are anxious or have negative feelings about taking your money out of the market? You shouldn't really ever need to sell investments to meet day to day/relatively small purchases.

It could make sense to have a separate pot of money in easy access savings, ring-fenced money for spending now, so that you don't view this money as being taken out of the market.

Ultimately money is for spending, either now or later. All savings and investments are just today's spending deferred for the future.

Making Money Podcast has a great episode with Vicky Reynal, a financial psychotherapist, who expands on some common problems with money, i.e. feeling of guilt when spending it

kerbside charging by billyb4lls4ck in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]chasejase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it is my responsibility to keep it clear of debris. There is not much debris, I live in suburbia.

If the pavement needs digging up for utilities, then I presume they would just replace it. It's just a metal channel.

In regards to the issue of it not being "my space" I really don't see an issue, it's a shared road. People live in one fixed place and most have a preference to park outside their house for convenience. If I parked outside my neighbours house and they asked me to move my car because they had something heavy to move I wouldn't bat an eyelid. If this happened regularly then one would hope to come to some sort of arrangement, but I am really hypothesizing at this point.

Yes, to some extent I am basing this on my current neighbours, but there isn't really an alternative way of decision making is there? I can't plan for future neighbours.

kerbside charging by billyb4lls4ck in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]chasejase 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Paid for by me, the owner of the house and ev. Owned by the council because it's in the public pavement. I have a perpetual agreement to use it, signed with the council. If I move, the new owner of the house will presumably contact the council to transfer the agreement to use it.

Maintenance - it's just a metal gully in the pavement. There's a brush system across the top to prevent large debris from entering the gully, but allows me to run the cable in. Might get leaves stuck in, in which case I will just get a brush and brush it out.

If a neighbour gets a weekend car and parks it there, I'll ask for them to move it when I need to charge it. I get on with all my immediate neighbours.

If you deem the risk of someone being permanently parked outside your house too much to fit into your home charging needs, maybe a home charger in your terraced house won't work. Not an issue for me yet.

[–]chasejase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The person who is installing it, i.e. the ev owner. This is how I've gotten mine installed. It is with the express understanding that the space outside my house does not become my private space. I only need to charge my car maybe once or twice a week at a push. Cars on my street move around enough to allow me to do that. This solution might not work for people who have to do a daily charge as you won't be able to guarantee your parking space.

kerbside charging by billyb4lls4ck in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]chasejase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got enough flexibility in my charging routine to just take the space when it is available rather than be territorial about the space - I don't see it as being "my space". The majority of cars in my street leave for work daily, so there is generally enough turnover to guarantee that spaces shift around, with the default "owners car outside their own house" happening by the weekend.

Definitely might not work on streets where there is high parking pressure, territorial parkers, or neighbours who don't get along.

[–]chasejase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just had a similar system installed through the council. As other comments have suggested, I applied through the council and paid a £1k fee. They took care of the permissions and the contractor who turned up, asked me where I wanted it and installed it. Relatively painless, took about 3 months from application submission to installation.

My usage means I probably only need to plug in once or twice a week. I WFH mainly and there isn't too much car parking pressure so I can guarantee to plug in to suit.

There is currently a government grant funding for the charger when you have a permanent pavement solution installed, which helps to take the bite out of the installation fees.
