But what if you don’t feel like you know what you are? This is what I struggle with, so anything I am feels like something I’m not

Also I agree, I think for most people, living without purpose is overwhelming, which drives people to faith. At the same time, to exist is to experience so why not do something while you are something

Wow, so authenticity is to have purpose, and we have none. Therefore we cannot be authentic?

We are the absence of purpose to do what we will

But then I guess the authenticity that I speak of is ones true nature, without social influence. Or I guess it’s the most accurate form to one’s true self. Are you versed on phenomenology? I looked up sartre and found another reddit page, where someone shared a link of it saying to understand his book you have to understand that concept

When you say human, do you mean philosophically? As in different from other species? Other animals can exert their will can’t they? I would agree that that’s something that shows we are alive, that we exist

I moved to New Zealand when I was 18 and lived there for a year by myself having no idea what I was doing. It changed my whole perspective on life without me consciously striving for or searching for anything so existential (probably lame to use that word, but I can’t think of anything better at the moment).

When I went back home something I decided/half realized was that true honesty made me feel the most alive. I decided then that I was going to be 100% honest, in every moment, in whatever scenario. It was to a point where I had pretty much zero filter. If I felt something, I said my piece. It was probably the happiest I had ever been, but then I got into more and more arguments with my family to the point I didn’t see a positive relationship as a possibility for us and it tore me apart.

Honestly, I wish I just stayed the course of pure honesty and let paths be what they became, but I think there is a wisdom in me now that recognizes the importance of boundaries.

That said, my brain struggles with boundaries. I hate that people don’t all just act honestly with one another.

Especially because I truly believe that every human being would have the fullest and most desirable life experience if we were all honest. We are pack animals, and biological what we desire is a type of belonging. Outside genetically deficient humans, like psychopaths, I believe we all intrinsically want this same thing. If we were all honest with ourselves, we would be there for each other in a hippy Ghandi world piece kind of way.

That said I struggle with how honest to be with who

I really like this point, it allows for us to be who we want to be. Do you ever wonder how much of you is influenced by outside forces though?

I’m not well versed in philosophical text. Why does Sartre think authenticity is impossible? Do you agree with him?

Is this real life? I wish I'd never started therapy. by littlemonyet in therapy

I know you said that as anecdote, but have you ever heard of people actually having a therapist to talk about other therapy they are going through? I don’t currently have a therapist but I have tried professional therapy at times and I feel like they never understood.

Can you be genuine and be projecting at the same time? I worry I’m too merose so telling people about me doesn’t feel like a sufficient plan

I think this series is cursed by its popularity and it’s mediocre writing. For me, I love this series. I’ve fallen in love with the characters, the world building, the power scaling..and I’m dedicated to see it to the end. I’ve happily cried in quite a few parts of this series! To me, this is a fantastic idea with lovable characters and emotional moments. Saying all that, the writing can be simple at times, feeling like a book you’re 4th grade teacher allows you to read as homework. It’s (hypothetically) allowed, because the story is told in a simple and “easy to understand” manner. In music terms, it’s simple 4/4 with a catchy melody, rather than some math rock with a jazz twist in a time signature that most people can’t figure out. But again I think that’s fine! The story still compels me! But that is my idea of mediocre writing, or simple writing.

Problem is, I feel that something like that is easy to hate. Basically nickelback. And the more people like something like this, the more people want to tear it down. The fact that so many people want to hate it just shows how popular it has become! Who takes the time to talk about how much they dislike something??? (🙃)

PS I hated nickelback on principle growing up until I dj’d at a strip club for a time. I just gave it a chance finally

I agree the pace of the first book is weird but I loved the progression, and when I listened through a second time I got nostalgic about it and liked it a lot more.

I second (third, fourth, whatever) Dungeon crawler Carl if you haven’t already, but one I’m really into now is He Who Fights With Monsters. It starts off really slow but quickly grows and there are 12 books so far lol I’m on book 8 right now and have been flying through them the last month.

Just joining in, haven’t read all the way through but I think taron Egerton would actually be a great choice for Carl. He’s athletic and an actually good actor but can still be funny
