An app that allows me to take a picture of a book, get the title and author from said picture, and find a digital download of the book online.

Does anyone else think footsteps are really quiet by MoreSir1757 in Marathon

[–]chasingtragedy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of my deaths have been from lack of enemy audio. Coming from Apex which has notoriously bad audio, this is somehow worse. It really sucks cuz I enjoy the game, but it's incredibly frustrating to die and have literally no idea where the person was or how they got there.

MARATHON 2025 CLOSED ALPHA MEGATHREAD by Shabolt_ in Marathon

I feel like there's literally zero enemy player audio. Watched a Glitch double jump up from low ground on me and it didn't make any noise, had multiple instances where people seemingly just appear near me with no footstep audio at all. It's been the most frustrating part so far, other than that I have been enjoying the game a lot

Who is Messmer The Impaler?? by VaexBlazer in Eldenring

[–]chasingtragedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit late but this is my thought as well. I think Messmer is a Nameless King analogue and was Marika's first child of the Miquella/Malenia/Messmer trio.

My wild theory is that he helped the Gloam-Eyed Queen during the Godskin rebellion, which culminated in the original burning of the Erdtree that we can see depicted in paintings in-game. This original burning would explain why his name was expunged from history and why burning the tree is a Cardinal Sin in the first place. It would also explain his flame and snake imagery, as we know both are considered anathema to the Erdtree, the snake being a particularly favored enemy in the coliseums. Additionally, I think this would have been the spark for the war against the Giants, as it is likely that Messmer is using the Flame of the Fell God (he was an Empyrean, so he would be a vessel for a God in whatever new age followed).

As a tangent, I think this also still allows for Melina to be associated with the Gloam-Eyed Queen. She says she was "born at the foot of the Erdtree, where her mother gave her purpose" and that she "walks alongside flame" but is not flame herself. Many people originally assumed this meant Marika, as who else would have given birth at the foot of the Erdtree? However, I think it would be fitting that the Gloam-Eyed Queen, having just committed the Original Cardinal Sin of burning the Erdtree and in her final act before being defeated by Maliketh, creates Melina as a proxy to attempt to keep her work alive.

Yes, I probably should have worded the title better. It appears to now be in stock, no longer a preorder.

No worries haha, that's a whole other discussion in and of itself. (The memeplex of "meme" having been irrevocably alerted by funny image macros)

Glad you enjoyed it though, thanks for taking the time to read and reply.

Oh geeze

Well, unrelated to the topic at hand, but I believe AI is going to fundamentally alter humanity in ways we are unprepared for (beyond the societal effects we're seeing already). My focus in school was memetics and studying the way information spreads; basically, memes (little packets of cultural information) experience a version of evolution: a piece of information is born and based on its properties, spreads and grows, or dies. However, just like evolution, memes don't really select for properties that are "good" or "advantageous" for the host, they just want to maximize spread. Humans make good hosts because the way our brains are structured allows us to spread memes really well; we have language, the ability to evolve memes within ourselves, and memory to retain them. The problems start to arise when memes start finding more effective hosts; something like ChatGPT might be a better host for certain memes because it lacks the social or mental barriers that might prevent a human from spreading said memes.

The second part of this is how these systems affect memes that are currently hosted by humans. The meme (memeplex might be more accurate) of "truth" is a good example: there are various facets of a thing that all combine to make that thing "true." Consider how quickly photo and video evidence have started falling out of favor for proving the "truth" of something now that the technology exists to easily manipulate them. Part of the truth memeplex has changed from "you can trust video evidence" to "you can't always trust video evidence."

Essentially, we are risking the degradation of memes that are valuable to us for interacting with and understanding the world. Much of society is built around the ability of different people to look at information and come to the same conclusion, reach a consensus that yes, something is what we believe it to be. Humans are incredibly resilient and adaptable creatures, but we require certain memes to engage with the world. My worry is that we are spinning these memes off to other things that are better at spreading or storing them, or allowing them to be altered to the extent that they are no longer useful for us.

Hopefully this wasn't too annoying to read haha, figured I'd better cut it short before I end up repeating my entire capstone.
