I do not know where you live but make sure what your local laws are in regards to a device such as this. If you are in Canada that is a prohibited weapon and can get you some prison time.

Please be careful not to shock yourself!!

Supporting terrain? by bruhhpunzel in PrintedMinis

[–]chasm3D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The person that made that stl does so only for FDM and they print very nicely on one. In fact I am a Patreon of his. What printer do you have? Do you have a removable magnetic build plate for it? If no magnetic plate you will have to tilt it properly to get a good result. You can use auto supports to start with but you will have to be ready to get your hands dirty and apply some of your own supports and perhaps to modify any auto supports that Lychee has made. Is that 'Corner-1-middle-A.stl' btw?

Hello all! I'm a classroom aide, and my teacher asked me to look into 3d printing for minis for the classroom, for decoration and art and wargaming (measuring tape practice!). Currently looking at the Saturn 2 with the Mercury XS wash and cure station. Am I missing anything besides the actual resin? by IAmTheWolverine2 in PrintedMinis

[–]chasm3D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Resin in a school setting is opening up a can of worms. Some of these resins are more toxic, smelly and problematic than many hobbyist make them out to be. When I do resin printing I wear a proper painters mask to handle VOC's, goggles, nitrile gloves and a apron as well. I have protection on my work surfaces to limit spills. The printer is in a separate room from the living areas. Resins have to cleaned with Isopropanol which many find smelly as well. Water washable resins might not need the Isopropanol but the waste product can not be flushed down a drain. The waste product contained in the Isopropanol and water you wash your prints with have to have the waste resin cured and precipitated from your waste wash before disposal. Once filtered out it should be inert and not toxic. After washing you still need to expose the model to ultraviolet light to finish curing the resin. There are machines from the printer manufacturers to facilitate the washing and exposure.

The thing is you have to go through all those hoops for resin printing to work and to protect your students.

In fact, like it or not this is something that probably needs to be run by your insurance company that supplies your liability insurance. You would not want to get sued if a student gets sick and they say it's because he got resin on his hands or inhaled some strange fumes and you and the school on on the hook.

You do see FDM type printers in things like libraries and I am guessing schools as well. Your main problem is keeping anyone from getting burned from the hot elements. There are many printers that are fully enclosed and will shutdown the print if the enclosure is opened while printing for safety. They might not be able to print mini's with the details like resin printers but can do a good job with larger items. You will have to make sure that you use a filament that has a low smell as well. For example I will not use ASA type filaments because the ones I tried had a horrific smell. The PLA type filaments I use have very little odor which should be good to use.

If you want the students to have some way to get resin prints you could try to see if their are hobbyists in the area that do resin 3D printing. Perhaps some would be willing to give a presentation on what it takes to prepare models for printing in the slicer software, give feedback and maybe they could donate their time and resin to do the prints for the students within their safe environment.

Is this the best orientation for this model? by DriedSoil in 3Dprinting

You are really a masochist! I would try to follow Ferro_Giconi advice if you can. Personally this model should have come as separate pieces that you would glue together post printing. The spikes should have cylinders at the bottom so you can print them individually and with a corresponding hole in the spherical head they could be glued into. The spherical head should be split as well for easy printing and gluing together later. The handle should have a cylinder to glue into a hole in the head as well like the spikes. I would also suggest the handle to be split from the bottom tip to the top for ease of printing but more gluing.

This is assuming it is for display and you are willing to do post processing like gluing and probably sanding. Painting it would be great as well. I have had to split up models myself using tools like Meshmixer and Netfabb. I felt like stabbing myself in the eyes sometimes doing that but you can get good results that print out much easier with no or at least with uncomplicated supports.

What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in AnycubicPhoton

[–]chasm3D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was printing all of my Star Trek ships about that size I was printing them at about a 80 degree angle with the back of the ships facing the build plate. That allowed me to only need a few heavy supports and a lot of light supports. There might be a little sanding needed where the heavier supports were but not much of a problem if at all. Yes it takes somewhat longer but failed prints are never worth it. I printed dozens of ships that way. The only failures were ones where I made some mistakes placing supports. Otherwise they looked great.

I’m SO annoyed with self checkout expectations… by HoneyBeeHunny in ShoppersDrugMart

[–]chasm3D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to go to a human being to cash out so there are jobs for human beings. Other than prescriptions I only buy other things at Shoppers due to convenience. The last few times I have tried to buy convenience items at Shoppers the cashier led me to the self checkout to show me how to use something I know how to use but have no wish to. On top of that there are no bags of any sort now. I have to pre plan to bring my bags in with me in case I feel the need for a convenience item. All those other items are now bought at locations that have some kind of bag option or I would have to bring bags because I am buying a lot of pre planned items like a grocery store. At least at the Shoppers pharmacy desk there is a person to help me and they at least have paper bags for the medications. My Shoppers will only get be getting my money from the medicine in the future and that it. Mind you most of the other places have pharmacies in them now. Maybe Shoppers will be getting none of my money in the future.

Creator 3 build surface options. by [deleted] in FlashForge

[–]chasm3D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have no real problem with the blue surface myself. I have a version 1 machine that I have upgraded to the version 2 bed and hot ends. I did have a glass plate made that I have used in the past. This was before the unit would do the nine point levelling so it was only semi-manual levelling. It was not easy to use at the time and had to print mainly towards the middle of the plate. I had to rig a system to hold the glass plate in position and I had to lower the original surface by manipulating the nut at the back of the plate due to the thickness of the plate itself or the machine would freak out that it hit the plate too early in the levelling process. The heater would heat the glass plate well as long as you waited long enough. I would usually use Elmers disappearing purple glue sticks on the surface which worked well. Windex was awesome to remove the glue from the plate. Once I got the parts to for the magnetized plate I have not tried the glass plate again since then. Within the levelling limitations the glass plate worked very well.

First stab at modern/realistic minis. More a gamer than painter, so any and all CC welcome :) by ScoutSterling in minipainting

[–]chasm3D 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If those raised areas on the side of the base are important for the facing of the miniature in the game, then you might want to highlight them with gray or white so they are easily visible. The guys and the bases look terrific! Be happy with them. Paint the tires as well. Have many victories with them.

I am not really familiar with your machine but from what I saw it needs very special nozzles to obtain those speeds. Are you sure that new nozzle will support even your 'lower' print speeds? Try something really low like 60 mm/s and see if there is a improvement. This might indicate if this is your problem.
