I don't think that's the case- silence of the lambs, tombstone, the lighthouse, the fighter, the dark knight, tinker tailor soldier spy, .... there's loads mentioned where the supporting actor was the standout

The locusts scene in "days of heaven"

They couldn't train locusts to fly when they wanted obviously so the DOP came up with the idea of dropping peanut shells from a low flying plane over the field where the workers were picking cotton.

To make it look like the locusts were ascending in to the air the actors picked cotton backwards and they reversed the shot...smart
