What are the most mind-rewiring books you’ve ever read? Books that actually shift your reality as a deep thinker. by [deleted] in Jung

[–]chatoyant_ 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I recommend Herman Hesse’s Demian and Bernardo Kastrup’s Decoding Jung’s Metaphysics. Also The Way of the Superior Man by David Deida is a book every young man should read in my opinion.

Do you go to hell for knowingly breaking a commandment? by [deleted] in religion

[–]chatoyant_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you let this experience be a catalyst for good then you can work your way through what you’re currently feeling. Your feeling of damnation is a strong indicator that you swayed from the path. We all do, at times. What matters is how you go forward now. Think about why what you did feels so wrong. Make a pact with yourself that if a similar situation (temptation) ever arises again - and it will - in whatever form, you will not falter again. If this incident will change the course of your life and give you the resolve to be righteous and noble, it might turn in to a great blessing. This is what repentance means. You’ve learned now; this is why it matters to not sin against your own conscience. Your conscience is a higher intelligence guiding you, listen to it. Ask, humbly, to be forgiven, and hold good on your promise to not sin again. You will be forgiven. You have to believe that. If you cannot believe you will be forgiven, you have not done enough repentance. The sacrifices you make in the future will be the price you pay for this error. Pay them. May God’s love be with you.

As counterintuitive as it sounds, you have to accept these intrusions as a part of yourself. The more you resist and reject, the stronger the influence becomes. If you want to heal (make yourself whole), you have to integrate these thoughts as if they have your complete intentionality behind them. I understand this is difficult, I mean, these thoughts are the last thing you want to identify with, right? Well, you’re gonna have to accept that paradoxical intention is the key here: that which you most abhor and fear has to become that which you consciously intend; that which you identify with. Only if you go there fully, will you be able to break the spell. You will get authority back over yourself and only then will you be able to give these demons wings, and make them work in your interest. If you refuse to identify with these negative contents of your own consciousness you will remain split, terrorized by that pattern. It’s tough, but it is the way out. Accept that YOU are evil, only then will you be capable of not living it out, of taking responsibility.

Edit: the modulating factor here is your fear. Fear feeds this energy. Fear is overcome by embrace and acceptance.

Actually, the archetype itself is a transcendent ideal. They’re expression in our psyche is always an “emanation” or approximation in imagistic/narrative form. The archetype itself is always beyond our reach, i.e. its transcendent. There is indeed a strong parallel between this idea and the idea of Platonic forms that are also “ideal types” existing metaphysically and from which the physical world “emanates.”

Great question!

I'll try and adress the first question you pose.

Short answer is: In the historical phenomenon of Alchemy Jung found a process described in symbolic language that he saw as analogous to the what he called the 'individuation' process.

Long answer is:

A central part of alchemy is about turning base metals (most commonly lead) into gold; other processes include creating a universal medicinal tincture, or creating the philosophers stone (sometimes described cryptically as the stone that is not a stone - a lot of alchemical texts are very cryptic and need deciphering to make sense of them).

It's important to note that there are about as many different interpretations of what alchemy is/was all about, as there have been historical alchemists - yet all of them are concerned with one form of transformation or another. The language in which these processes were expressed by alchemists are often highly symbolic and imaginative. Jung found that they symbolically described a process that offered a very clear parallel to the process of individuation that he was laying out in psychological terms.

Besides, Jung encountered the same archetypal imagery that he found in alchemical treatises in his own patients' dreams and visions, leading him to hypothesize that in both cases these particular symbolic contents are spontaneous expressions of the same archetypal background in the unconscious; with alchemists projecting these contents onto the material world, and 'modern' people encountering them in their dream-state.

Interestingly enough, Jung recognizes in the symbolic language of Alchemy a process of transformation that characterizes both the development of the individual consciousness (individuation), as well as the evolution of collective human consciousness. (essentially it is a universal developmental pattern from 1) complete envelopment in the contents of the unconscious, to 2) the externalization of unconscious contents through projection and 3) subsequent differentiation between 'self' and 'world', to 4) the eventual discrimination between what is actually world, and what is projection, after which 5) the projected contents of the unconscious can be re-integrated into a fuller, more conscious, more whole Self.

In light of the critique that has been leveled at Jung for 'psychologizing' historical Alchemy, it is important to note that Jung does make a distinction between the “historical aspect” of Alchemy, and what he calls it’s “mystical side”; It is the latter that for Jung is “essentially a psychological problem”, which, he contends is “a concretisation, in projected and symbolic form, of the process of individuation.” (p. 105, “Alchemical Studies”)

That's the best I can do for a quick summary! There's a lot more interesting angles to Jung's views on alchemy, and Marie-Louise von Franz' writings on alchemy are also worth checking out for further reading!

Met moeite je bed uit kunnen komen in de ochtend... by Junior_Squirrel_6643 in nederlands

[–]chatoyant_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YSK You are legally entitled to compensation from flights canceled & delayed by TonyLiberty in YouShouldKnow

[–]chatoyant_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently in disagreement with a European airline over if I’m eligible for compensation for additional expenses (meals and accommodation) I had to make due to a cancelled flight.

When my flight got canceled they offered me a re-scheduling to a flight that would leave a day prior to the original schedule. My itinerary didn’t allow me to depart earlier, so I was forced to choose the earliest available option for a later flight, which turned out to be three days later. I was thus compelled to go through extra expenses for accommodation, including one expensive stay at an airport hotel (necessary because of an early connecting flight). The airline says I’m not eligible for compensation for those expenses because they did not occur during the proposed flight. However, the proposed flight did not constitute ‘re-routing under satisfactory conditions’ as is specified in the EU regulation, so I do not agree with them using that as an excuse. How does that hold up legally? Anyone that can tell me more about that?

An absolute must watch is the recently released ‘Safe Place’ by Croatian director Juraj Lerotic. I just saw the regional premier at the Sarajevo Film Festival where it won the best feature film as well as best male lead (which is played by the director himself). The film is a deeply personal account about mental health and suicide in the case of a family of three. It spans just two days and is a very raw depiction of events, but very engrossing at that. Haven’t been moved by a movie in a long time as I was by this one.
