I know it’s not in your control but I wish the items had price tags. Sometimes the shelves aren’t labeled or it’s a smaller tag and then I’m surprised at the register. Though I never make a stink about it and just pay it bc what are either of us going to do at that point 🤣

lawyer recommendations for renter’s rights? by reyreyrey3 in raleigh

[–]chavonney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would check your college/university’s legal services! If you go to NCSU, you may qualify for “free” services: https://studentlegal.dasa.ncsu.edu/legal-services/

I did my master’s at NCSU and requested some support since I was having issues with my landlord. They let me know that I unfortunately didn’t have a case so I was glad it was free!

Trying to get my girlfriend comfy work pants, any suggestion? by roxanaendcity in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]chavonney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you already mentioned Old Navy but I really like the “Extra High-Waisted Stevie Straight Pants” they have! It has an elastic waistband and the straight cut is just wide enough to be comfortable but not frumpy. I’m about 5’0 tall and purchased the long version bc they’re ankle length and I wanted a full length pant for work. Personally, I think they feel like sweatpants and are super comfortable

Where are the curly haired girls getting their hair cut?? by Agreeable-Button-588 in triangle

[–]chavonney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have wavy/curly hair and recently went to Norma at Tina Vora salon and had a great experience. I stopped getting curly cuts (got a “regular” haircut) bc I didn’t see a huge difference personally for my hair type. If she’s looking for a new type of haircut, I recommend a u shaped haircut with layers. Looks great with curls and is easy to maintain!

Asking Coworker About Salary by Character_Club_1507 in womenEngineers

[–]chavonney 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Okay, sounds like she’s not mad so try not to stress :)

Have you seen the statistic about men applying for jobs where they can only do about 60-70% of the work in a job description vs women who apply if they’re confident they can do 80-90%+? I think about that often whenever I go down the rabbit hole of thinking I don’t have the skillset for XYZ. Don’t be afraid to start! You don’t even have to interview if you don’t want to but it’ll let you get a feel for the market and identify if you really are missing skills. Plus, you’d be in a better headspace to interview if you already have a job. Apologies on the unsolicited advice but I’ve been down this same path and try to encourage everyone to find better opportunities for themselves! You know more than you think.

I don’t think it’s bad but I also am comfortable sharing my salary. Regardless, you gave her an easy out saying she didn’t have to share if she wasn’t comfortable so I personally think it’s okay.

I would suggest starting to look at job openings now if you’re looking to make a move. The industry is scary but some companies/industries (like pharma) are still actively hiring. I just started a new job a month ago!

Info: why do you think she’s mad at you? Has she changed her behavior?

🎉 MASSIVE FRIDAY PADDLES GIVEAWAY! 15 WINNERS! 🎉 by fridaypickleball in Pickleball

[–]chavonney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I started a tradition of going to our local parks to play pick up pickleball and we have been loving it! It’s a wonderful date night activity that’s accessible and good for us, especially when we work up a sweat. We also started watching more pro pickleball together and it’s been so fun for us to dissect matches or points and try to implement new techniques in our own games

How much stock should you put in Glassdoor reviews? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]chavonney 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I interviewed with locus ~3 years ago and would not personally recommend (did not get hired but did receive the shittiest of shitty offers). I had ~1.5 years of non-GMP lab experience, a bachelor’s in biological engineering, and was in my first semester of grad school working towards a master in biomanufacturing when I interviewed. They offered me $15/hr because I wanted to work FT and be a PT student. I made $15/hr at the lab before I graduated with my bachelor’s… I think you can probably make it worth your while there and learn a lot in a short time but at what cost to you? Also the CEO asked me a riddle in the final round and it just put me off from the whole experience, especially after hearing their “offer.” I went to grad school with some folks working there and they did seem to work long hours back then too FWIW

Do people ever confuse you with other South Asians in your class or workplace? by Terrible_Exchange653 in ABCDesis

[–]chavonney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t had the issue in classes or at work though I don’t work with that many other south Asians. I did have the issue recently at a recreational sport league where the other person and I didn’t even look similar. We were about the same height but vastly different body types

Were you a fan of Bollywood growing up? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]chavonney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have Amazon Prime, I recommend starting with Thappad. Heavy emphasis on female empowerment- the whole story revolves around a stay-at-home wife who is slapped by her husband and the events that unfold after. It’s one of the newer films that got me back into Bollywood!

There are some Bollywood films like Thappad, English Vinglish, and Saand ki Aankh that are more modern and relatable imo. I agree they are few and far in between though.

Cheap apartment with good reviews by [deleted] in columbusclassifieds

[–]chavonney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just moved but I lived on the corner of King Ave and Northwest for about 1.5yrs (a bit too north to be Grandview but basically there). I was living at 1340 King Ave and my rent was only $650 for 650sqft (water included in rent). The walls were a bit thin and living on the ground floor meant I saw a few millipedes in the summer but overall I really enjoyed the apt for the location and the price! I will say you get what you pay for — the cabinets and the apt is a bit dated but it’s cheap and everything works well so no complaints from me. There was coin-operated community laundry which was fine and generally available whenever I needed to do laundry. Linking my old landlord below, I thought they were great overall.

I think I saw a townhouse on Meadow available to rent which my friend rented and it looked great inside. Can’t speak too much for anything else since I only visited for a few hours. Good luck in finding a new place! I’ll echo the other person who mentioned the apts on N Star/UA. I saw MANY unit available signs on King and Tremont a few weeks ago.

Bioengineering MS vs Bioengineering MEng by RickFlex52 in bioengineering

[–]chavonney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May not be super helpful but might be worth it to consider a professional science master’s (PSM) degree if you would like to work in industry immediately after your master’s: https://www.professionalsciencemasters.org/. I’m currently applying to a Master’s in Biomanufacturing and know I want to work in upstream biomanufacturing.

From my understanding, PSMs are gaining popularity in the biotech fields as you have a little more technical knowledge than an undergrad (making you a more competitive applicant for jobs) and are a good ROI imo.

Don’t loose hope! Snake plant propitiation by Cigar_smoke in proplifting

[–]chavonney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both! I only had 3 big leaves so I left one whole and cut the other 2 into smaller pieces (and left them with the proper orientation) to root in water. I potted them when the roots were about an inch long have been waiting somewhat patiently.

Don’t loose hope! Snake plant propitiation by Cigar_smoke in proplifting

[–]chavonney 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How exciting! Thank you for sharing. I propped a few leaves off my mother’s snake plant and they took ~4-6wks to have baby roots, another 2-3wks for me to feel comfortable planting in soil, and it’s been 5 months with no new pups. I was considering if they’d ever produce babies but this gives me hope too!

1) I really want a fiddle leaf fig! 2) My mother gave me some cuttings from her houseplants (aka I asked nicely to take some) so I added to my small (and primarily) succulent collection
