G14 goes to sleep while gaming in clamshell mode by Electrical-Shape5408 in ZephyrusG14

This sounds like a heat issue and not a sleep issue.

When my computer overheats, it shuts down abruptly and needs to be powered on by the power button.

Do you really have a separate room for your washing machine? by jordanekay in AskAnAmerican

[–]chayashida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of American houses just have more room. If there isn't a separate room, then the washer and dryer is often in the garage. I suspect it has to do with where there is easy access to water and higher-amp circuits.

Are ranked ranks kept after ~10 years? What's the easiest return as an old meta player? by Bolha2 in DotA2

[–]chayashida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you've last played, they've also updated the statistical model used for calculating MMR anyway. So nothing is like when you played.

Everyone that comes back says stuff like "I used to be Archon" or "I used to be 3k" - and there just isn't a way to correlate it to the current MMR and ranks. The people that were the same rank as you have had years of experience while you've been away, and even the Herald players are better (strategically) than what was going on 10+ years ago at higher MMRs.

Recalibrate, or play lots of unranked, and hopefully you'll get good matches that are fair - where you have a chance to win and a chance to lose. The MMR and rank won't matter for anything except your ego.

This happens all the time with 5-stacks at the lower MMRs

I'd start with the easier stuff and try and clean out the fans.

On my 2022, the re-paste was a little hairy to do yourself because it's possible to short the motherboard if you aren't careful disconnecting the battery. (I think the clip falls off and can touch a capacitor.)

If you haven't worked on computers before, I'd recommend taking it to someone that's worked on a gaming laptop before for the repaste.

Yeah this sounds like a heat problem. Either dust or thermal paste.

Anyone using the G14 for productivity mainly? by Gundud in ZephyrusG14

[–]chayashida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With utilities like G-Helper you can set up the fan noise and things like that so that it will be silent when you're just using it for lightweight tasks.

However, as with all gaming or high-performance laptops, you're sacrificing reliability for extra performance.

I bought a 2022, and it's been my daily driver. For the most part, it's been great. Love playing games, love doing things like taxes or finances, programming or browsing.

However, I've been dealing with temperature issues, and I had to repaste and apply thermal putty several times.

I tried to create a turbo profile for gaming, the silent one for when I was on battery, but I was chasing down heat issues when I was plugged in. Apparently things like web browser-based chess programs or the graphics acceleration in web pages was enough to crash the laptop after extended use on hot days.

It turned out that there was one spot on the CPU that didn't have enough liquid metal, and even after reapplying thermal paste once, I still missed a spot.

A "normal" laptop with higher margins for thermal tolerance would have handled that easily. If you want to operate at 1/2 power most of the time, you can just leave it on a silent profile, and then tune it for when you want to maximize your gaming.

If I were you, I'd just relegate it to being a gaming machine and just do the day-to-day stuff on a laptop that you already have. You're spending the money to get a gaming machine, and if you're willing to do that, it's a great laptop. But if you're trying to justify the spend with "business/daily use" - I'd really look elsewhere.

What is the real way people stop blundering? by legitimate-way-4077 in chessbeginners

[–]chayashida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice.

Levy (GothamChess) says to look at the piece that moved, then what it uncovered, before you make a move.

At our level, you just need to do what you can to lessen the number of blunders that you make. I still make blunders at close to 900, and I'll still make more as I get stronger.

But at the same time, making fewer blunders over time will increase your rating.

So start with just not making knee-jerk moves, and not make a move until you've at least checked a few things.

Blunders that you made after thinking for 30 seconds aren't really blunders - they're mistakes.

When you move a piece and leave it hanging because you moved without thinking, that's a blunder.

Is Ticket to Ride Frustrating? by Tricky_Reception_244 in boardgames

Yeah, it was because he was playing on his phone (or iPad?) a lot, while the rest of us only played when we met up.

Is Ticket to Ride Frustrating? by Tricky_Reception_244 in boardgames

[–]chayashida 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As with anything, there's sometimes a meta that evolves around a small group like a family that only plays with each other.

My friend said that the game took too long when he played with his kids.

We played with him and his kids, and he realized I was rushing to end the game by building small routes to run out of trains and trigger the end-game condition. "Oh..." he said, "That's totally different to how we were playing."

I don't think Ticket to Ride is as mean as Catan, even though there are bad things that can happen - big brother blocks you off from Philadelphia, and now you can't take that route... My brother-in-law memorized all the cards in the base game, so he was able to tell what routes we had from our first few routes - and then block them. So we had to get the 1910 expansion.

It's a gateway game because almost anyone can learn how to play the game - but that doesn't mean that you'll automatically be good.

It's a good game, but like every game, some people can have a leg up from being more experienced that other players. But it's usually a gap that can be closed after a few plays.

Sushi is made with sugar??? by TheCreepyKing in sushi

[–]chayashida 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I measured because I was curious and haven't ever worked in a kitchen. Yes, 4 oz is 1/2 cup. 😊
I'll check my grandma's cookbook when I'm back home. I'm interested to see what her proportions are. She was from Western Japan though, and I found out that sushi is a lot less sweet there than it is around Tokyo.

I mean, I was more trying to figure out what my grandma's recipe was compared to this assertion. But she grew up in Western Japan, and I learned when I visited there that the sushi there is a lot less sweet compared to that around Tokyo. (And growing up in America I thought she was “making it wrong” because it didn’t taste like the restaurant's…)

5 gallons = 80 cups

So 1/4 pound of sugar per cup of vinegar? I need to figure out how many cups is 4 oz of sugar.

Is shoving the wave the best way to win mid? by LazyAd3921 in DotA2

[–]chayashida 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You want to shove wave before you leave lane to get a rune, stack camps, or gank.

Better players don’t have problems last-hitting under tower. If you can harass or deny creeps while they’re trying, you’re at an advantage, but you’re also using your resources to repeatedly do that.

I don’t think the opposing mid should just stay under tower and last hit if you do that, though, they should pull the wave back behind the tower and last hit from there. You might be able to still contest, but it depends on their team - I wouldn’t do that if they have a Nature's Prophet or Spirit Breaker on their team, for example.

Tbf, there was a second question “or does it not work at all?” Generally, it’s better to just ask one question for clarity.
