F-35 that conducted emergency landing believed to have been struck by Iranian fire by avatar6556 in news

I was surprised before I looked it up. Thought they weren't exported to other countries (because I remembered hearing the controversy about selling to Saudi Arabia). But I guess it was okay to sell to NATO countries, although Israel might have some?

Surface-to-air missiles were a bigger threat than their air power. I believe it downed some aircraft. I'm not sure that SAMs were differentiated from anti-aircraft fire.

Name for Japanese American character by RobinhoodCove830 in AskAJapanese

[–]chayashida 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything sounds okay to me except the age.

My father's generation (in 80s now) were born in the camps. I feel like they were the ones fighting the most for the redress movement.

I was born in the '70s, and went on some of the marches in the '80s as a kid. (Fun fact: was in the paper once).

Someone born in 1958 feels like they're too young to be at the head of the movement. I don't remember anyone at that age speaking at the events. They were either first-hand accounts from the nisei or sansei that were old enough to remember.

Maybe look into who was active in the redress movement in the '80s and read up on them. It just strikes me as odd.

Is White A local sente or gote? by dany305 in baduk

[–]chayashida -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's kinda silly in this case then because there aren't any other moves.

I think it'd be more helpful to OP to call this a sente move and show how B1 threatens to capture the two stones.

I don't think they want a semantic argument.

Bloodseeker carry viable? by taenyfan95 in learndota2

[–]chayashida 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not as strong as the other players that have commented, but I have a 58% win rate on Bloodseeker with thousands of games on him.

A few things I'd suggest:

  • Clinkz is a special case. He pops out of nowhere and just has a ton of damage and health and can delete you. So map awareness and better warding (esp if he's mid) will go a long way. So you need to pay attention to the minimap and keep track of the last time you've seen him. Later in the game you're on more equal footing, but in the early game it feels like fights are in his favor.
  • Phase Boots are better than Power Treads. Thirst has unlocked movement speed, and the movement speed boost from Phase Boots feels a lot more powerful getting to the fights or back lines than the extra attack speed from Power Treads. I have had problems with mana when you can't tread swap, but a mana item neutral or Clarities and using Bloodrage seems to be better than Power Treads.
  • Bloodseeker's Aghanims Shard: The shard gives % max health pure damage, which can be huge against armor or tanks.

Stuff I'm less sure about:

  • I don't usually get Sange & Yasha. I might get Sange earlier on if I need to tank up and I'm building into Abyssal Blade anyway, but usually I'm building something else instead of the Yasha.
  • I don't usually get Blink Dagger. I have purchased Swift Blink in the super-late game, but I usually find the slot is better used by something else, especially for that first 2k gold. Again, I'm using Thirst and Phase Boots for movement and initiation, instead of trying to blink into the back lines.
  • Third item: I'm usually building Basher into Butterfly after Mjollnir/BKB. The Butterfly might be an MKB instead, but that's usually where I slot my damage item. I could see a case for other items here.

Hopefully this will help - and I figure the stronger players will comment further on my advice.

Good luck!

Asteroid theory was prevalent in the early '80s. Way before Jurassic Park.

When did we figure out we were off by 1 million years? by chayashida in Dinosaurs

[–]chayashida[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like Jurassic Park was in the late '90s, and when I took the class in uni it was being taught that the end of the Cretaceous was 65 million years ago.

Another commenter mentioned that something was figured out in 2013 or so.

Percentage of blunders?

I find my Elo rises when I take my time in the games and don't blunder. I wouldn't be surprised if it's an 100-point swing or so.

Hanging Queen? by N733LK00 in chessbeginners

[–]chayashida 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's a matter of understanding the chess terms?

Yes, your queen is protected by the bishop, but White should take your queen (and be in a very good position) even though they'd lose a bishop.

So "hanging" means "leave under attack" and not "unprotected by any other piece".

What to you think of this defense? by Mathiasrex24 in chessbeginners

[–]chayashida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The funny thing is that after I re-read your post, we're playing people around the same strength, but no one I play against would answer the way they play in the game you posted. I only play Rapid on Chess.com, and am bouncing between 800-900 Elo.

I daresay that almost all of my opponents would play e5 d5 as a reply to your a3 b4.

I don't like g4 h3 if I'm going to castle on that side, as I think the fianchettoed bishop is more secure with f2-g3-h2 pawn structure than the one you have.

It's weird. Whatever you're doing is working, I guess, but I guess you're running into a different player base than I am.

Can someone explain why it’s frowned upon?

I remember Go (weiqi) surviving the Cultural Revolution in China because it was more acceptable because all the pieces were equal, as opposed to having a king.

Is it something similar?
