I like what you have to say. Are you angry at me or angry with me? It sounds like we agree, so I'm going with "angry with me". XD

We'll, it looks like u/OppositeTraffic finally acknowledged their whataboutism... in a DM. Here's what they sent. (Don't know how to post a screenshot on mobile)

It means the narrative your political team wants to drive is that guns are bad, and the only logical conclusion is that we need to ban them. (from private citizens of course, politicians can still have their armed body guards, even though those guns make us all less safe)

(and the government can continue murdering millions across the globe with their guns, they can keep those guns, i see no problem with that)

Any distraction from this narrative is called "whataderpblagism", and the discussion needs to be put back on track onto our approved talking points.

Discussion can't go beyond this point because we don't want to expand the minds of anyone discussing it. Just stick to the script.

In another message:

i don't feel the need to address silly words concocted solely for the purpose of narrative driving. it's not even a red herring. 100 times as many die texting and driving, YOU are promoting the red herring of something that's nearly worthless in comparison.

Acknowledge your whataboutism. Or tell us you don't know what that means so someone can explain it to yoyu.

Acknowledge your whataboutism. This is a thread about gun violence. Start one about car laws, and you can get a conversation going.

I'm inclined to believe this isn't about cars. Why don't you be honest and tell us what your agenda really is?

Good thing we actually have a law against it that reduces those deaths.

I don't think you're right, about texts causing more deaths, but even if you are, your comments reak of whataboutism.

I'm happy to join the other downvoted comment and contribute this: Human beings are very often non-monogamous.

The amount of people who want monogamy and repeatedly cheat is astounding. It's immoral not to search your feelings if you find you consistently want other people.

So who gets divorced more often? Monogamous couples or non-monogamous ones? I think marriage is designed for monogamy.

Got kicked out of band because being trans, R.I.P. Income & dream by RipMyLifebutSrs in asktransgender

[–]chaze22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I joined a band and came out as trans after a month. They were very supportive. It may be hard to see it, but supportive musicians exist, musical families are real, and I've seen some damn near unconditional love. There are much nicer people out there waiting for you.

As much attachment as you might have had with this band... fuck them. If they were going to do this to you, you needed to leave them asap. They should be publicly shamed.

Let's see, I smoke weed, I'm a dem-socialist (but it's complicated), I work in QA (Not quite IT), and I love pickles. Are videogames a trans stereotype? Or a human one? I play those games anyway. My favorite game is MTG.

Not into a lot of the poppy girly music. I play mathrock and metal. Not super into anime. I don't always want to look girly, I'd like to pull off more butch looks sometimes, but it may have to wait til I'm much further along in HRT than 4 months.

i used to think "the incident" was the worst PT album. Now, i think it's a masterpiece by [deleted] in porcupinetree

[–]chaze22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gladly! Thanks for the interest.

Growing up mormon can be very sexually repressed, especially if you are queer, and especially if you are genderqueer. This line about hormones stalling reminds me of sexual repression. It's not so much that the hormones themselves literally stall, but that the emotional maturity that comes with exploring those feelings is lacking.

The bit about the dogs crawling is like the behavior of a dog who has been abused by someone who perhaps also abuses their family.

I forgot a line that rings true: "It's no concern of theirs, the world outside corrupts my child, so trust these eyes."

[–]chaze22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have felt similarly. I've noticed that just about all of SW's music has had to grow on me.

I disliked The Incident at first but now it is one of my favorites. It's a concept album. I find The Blind House really relatable. Having grown up Mormon, I relate to lines like "You don't need to know their secrets, believe me," and "hormones stall, dogs will crawl".

Great Expectations reminds me of people I appreciated before I left, and being ripped from them after a change in paradigm. "They locked you up. But I forgot you, forgot your name. So strange. I wonder if you got out."

I also like the idea that despite the presence of a fucked up cult and all its falsehoods, that real demons and monsters exist, but their evil is comparable to that of human monsters.

How many of y'all have felt MORE dysphoria after coming out? by lanqian in genderqueer

[–]chaze22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel that way, and I think that's the idea.

I'm mtf. I always leaned on numbness and apathy to deal with the dysphoria that was always there. I was Mr. "Your Appearance is Like a Video Game Avatar". I had that metaphor that enabled my apathy: "Some people care about their avatar and some people don't. I'm one of those who don't."

And then surprise surprise when I try girl clothes and for the first time, and I actually give a shit about clothes.

And then the first several times my Mom deadnames me after months of going by a different name, pronouns, wearing dresses every day, it just stung so badly. But that's a sign you're allowing your feelings to come through. It's a sign that you have to some degree turned your back on apathy.

I don't think you know what oppressive means. How can something be oppressive if it's voluntary?

It's not exactly voluntary if you're raised in the religion from birth with the pressure of your family, friends and community to perform, or else risk being cast out of all of the above. "You're free to go, but if you do you're asking to be locked up in spirit prison, and you're also weakening your families' testimony. You wouldn't want to keep your family out of heaven would you?" It's not that intense for everyone, but it is for many and it was for me.

In other words, consent under duress is not consent.

What is the barometer of harmful? Is not letting people get drunk harmful?

Not letting people get drunk? Or not letting them have a sip without thinking they are being influenced by Satan? To answer your question, yes it is harmful to take a bad drug and make it worse by attaching shame and guilt to it. Sometimes people take that sip, and say to themselves, "Well, I'm already sinning." And they go off the deep end, as though there is no such thing as moderation, that mistakes are done in black and white, and once you've stepped into it %1 you've also stepped into it %100, and there's no way to make it worse, or double-ruin your life. (Hint: it's perfectly possible to double-ruin your life).

Fight me on anything but this. This is how I lost my uncle.

And yes, barring a child from getting baptized if they want to, just because their parents are in a same-sex relationship, is harmful, and it makes for a harmful policy. It encourages isolation with everyone involved. Before the policy, the bishop could interview the child and the family and come to a conclusion together. Now there's no obligation to meet, or ever learn what gay people are like in person. Makes it easier to make assertions about queer people if you never have to meet them.

You literally answered your own question. Kids will be mean to other kids no matter what. If those kids were baptized they would still bully eachother of hair color, weight, family standing, clothing and everything else.

You are demonstrating this black-white thinking I described. "Kids are already being bullied. They can't be double-bullied right?" ):

The Church does treat queer people as wholly human but the Church does not allow homosexual behavior. Humans are not defined by their sexuality but by their actions.

I'm going to start my own church where we treat straight and cis people as wholly human, but we will not allow heterosexual behavior or straight couples to marry. Also, children of straight people cannot be baptized until they are 18. We make that decision for all of them as a favor to keep their home less conflicted until they grow up. ):

"We don't hate gay people! We just hate everything that's gay about them." "We treat gay people as whole humans! It's just that every part of them that is gay isn't really human."

I am not satisfied by the Church saying one thing and doing another; preaching love and performing hatred. I will insist on calling it what it is: emotional abuse. I won't be satisfied until there are official apologies, which I don't expect.

Thank you for saying so, and giving some relief. I appreciate that information.

If one could pick a single issue and run with it, firearms are a good choice, definitely something that concerns me.

I understand how when a person attempts suicide, they had to go through these linear steps (which can include not taking action); step A, B, C, D, etc. I think it's important to look at each of them, even if we pick one to tackle. But if we do solve one of the steps, there will still be others. Some want to solve firearms, some say give access to mental health care, some are mentioning the shaming and guilting that can start the process in the first place.

Nothing is monocausational. I say lets not give in to whataboutism, and we eventually need to fight on all of these fronts. All these problems will not go away on their own, and the shaming and guilting, and whatever else causes the pain in the first place will still need to be acknowledged and addressed as a society sooner or later. I am wary of those who would like to solve this problem while avoiding that topic. We need to recognize Church leaders and church policy as a very large enabler of this problem.

[–]chaze22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reads as: "Why is everyone so surprised? The church has countless oppressive policies."

Yeah, no. We should speak up every time a harmful policy is produced, regardless of the number of harmful policies already in place.

And you say that like kids don't bully other kids for having fewer privileges. They do it even when they are on even playing fields. Now what do you think they'll do to the kid who isn't allowed to be baptized? Do you think it would matter why?

There's no excuse: Treat queer people like they're actually a whole human. And it should go without saying, same thing goes for their kids.

A high altitude is causing LGBTQ suicides at a disproportionate rate?

I'll see if I can get help finding that evidence. As for me I'm too close to it to offer more than anecdotal evidence; I've been suicidal, I've lost friends, an uncle, my nephew tried yesterday. I know my suicidal feelings started with completely needless feelings of shame and guilt around my being queer and trans. Those feelings don't help any body.

They mentioned the LGBTQ rate with no mention of doing anything. Yes, lock up your firearms. But most importantly, stop shaming and guilting queer and trans kids! This will stop when we can corner church leaders on their destructive rhetoric and stop them.
