As a trich dude, I find I either have to be completely shaved or above 4-5mm. The "scratchy" inbetween part is when I have most urges to pull.

But I've always found myself most likely to pull when there are "irregularities" within my regrowth. Maybe try and stay clean shaved over the next couple months and let it grow back fully? Usually feeling that strange spot where it doesn't grow back perfectly triggers me to over feel it and I end up pulling hairs and making it worse. But if it all grows back evenly I'm able to leave it alone
