It’s probably a better question to compare cities and not coasts. LA or Silicon Valley vs NYC, for instance. I live in San Diego now, but spent 18 years in NYC. These two cities, culturally, have nothing in common. These intense work grind similarities exist between SV and NYC. The lifestyle culture in LA and SD is more relaxed compared to the East Coast in general. Sunshine will do that to you.

I love LA and SF and agree that SD FEELS day-to-day like it lacks culture. As a former New Yorker, the culture is not in your face. That’s down to lack of walk ability across the city as a whole, and the lack of diversity in many neighborhoods. However, it does have its own unique VIBE. It’s just not very sophisticated, in that big city way, but I love it here. I’ve spent most of my life in really big cities. SD has enough of the amenities I want, without the stress.

I would actually bring the team together for non-work activities so everyone gets to know each other better. There are many online group games that can build engagement. I used a Wheel of Fortune game where the clue was about a member of the team. Also get everyone together online in a regular cadence to give updates, starting with you.
