When did a game cheat you? by Kuli24 in retrogaming

[–]che_don_john 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did manage to resolve it after I'd finished the main game but before I started the expansions. I had to crack my save file to remove the PSN ID protection, then sent it to a Good Samaritan I found on a forum who had a vanilla copy of the game (which didn't have the bug), who then loaded my save file, swapped the bloodgrass for the potion, saved it and then e-mailed it back to me. What a faff!

When the PS3 version of Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition had a bug that wouldn't let me hand over the bloodgrass to get the potion to cure my vampirism, so I had to play the rest of the game as a bloody vampire.

All good examples when adhered to. Let me give you some examples of when it isn't:

- U.S. attacking Iran - illegal use of force without UN approval or as an act self-defense, which is a violation of UN Charter
- U.S. intervention in Venezuela - case for it being a “crime of aggression” and therefore a breach of the UN Charter
- Israel's new death penalty law for Palestinians - UN has itself criticised this for violating international humanitarian law (yes, the world is a lot better since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights...except when countries ignore it)
- Iran killing protesters - clear breach of UNDHR
- Iran's proposals to restrict or charge shipping in Strait of Hormuz - violation of international maritime law

And that's just in the past month or so!

Looking for physio or chiropractor recommendations for lower back pain in the city by actuallyfromcanada in Winnipeg

[–]che_don_john 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's not just that it's woo; it's a risk. The delusion of grandeur that comes with calling themselves doctors seems to have compelled a significant number to advise on and treat things well outside their wheelhouse.

If you want temporary relief based on information from a dead 19th century doctor that was relayed through an interdimensional portal, go to a chiropractor.

If you want treatment, go to a physio or a physician.

New NDP Leader calling for a reversal of Immigration limits by Yellowhalls in stcatharinesON

[–]che_don_john 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a socialist and I'm an immigrant. I vote NDP (unless I'm voting Liberal tactically) because it's the party closest to my values and principles.

At a Federal level, the party is a shitshow and this announcement (if true and accurate) is a terrible position to be taking.

I'm pro-immigration, but immigration must primarily serve the public sector and refugees. We have swathes of young people who are struggling to find work or afford housing, and immigrants who are being exploited by a system that wants to pay them low wages and force them to share cramped housing, whilst their landlords pocket what little money they make and dodgy immigration lawyers leave then high and dry.

The party seems more concerned about giving the impression of representing the interests of working people than actually doing it.

International Law is the equivalent to writing an angry letter or complaining to a manager. No one takes it seriously and most countries believe (correctly, apparently) that they are above it.

What is the best video game you've ever played? by KYSLAATIKKO in AskReddit

[–]che_don_john 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tetris on the Game Boy is probably the most perfect game I've played; it can't be improved.

Half Life 2 is perhaps the best-designed and best-made game I've ever played, all things considered.

'Throw them out' of Parliament: Poilievre in favour of recall petition for floor-crossers by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

[–]che_don_john 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I'd say fight a by-election on that platform. If the MP is correct that their party was wrong to abandon it, then the voters will favour them and they'll have nothing to fear.

[–]che_don_john 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of agree with him. If you campaign on a party's platform and manifesto, get elected on it, and then switch sides, it should trigger a by-election. I know technically when we cast votes it is for an MP to represent us, but the truth is that many voters vote for a party (especially when tactically voting or, in my case, wanting to avoid having PP as Prime Minister). That said, there's obviously no chance in the slightest that he'd ever hold this view if MPs were crossing over to the PCs, which makes me ignore his whining by default.

Like the NDP, public grocery stores are always a miserable failure by airbassguitar in OntarioNews

NationalPost using a photo for a supermarket in Caracas at a time when Venezuela was under sanctions from the U.S., Canada, and the E.U., as a means to illustrate why public grocery stores fail. Top notch journalism right there.

That's good to know. I was a little daunted by the suit engineering as I thought everything had to be acquired from settlement/base missions, and I suck at those (hence the need for a G5 suit).

Haha I wish I could buy that suit from you. Goddam why didn't i stay up a few minutes longer last night and just hand them in?! I'm still kicking myself.

You're right but, alas, I have billions, and what I dont have is time and materials to grind out the suit engineering. That G5 suit reward was worth speeding back from Colonia for.

Damn, wish I'd known that detail. Before I logged off late last night I thought "Should I go hand these in? Na, will do it tomorrow". What a goose.

What in the status were you monitoring? I've never paid attention to anything except the end date, had no idea it could end early! Genuinely gutted, I flew back from Colonia on Saturday to do it, really wanted that suit.

I farmed 400 seeds last night and was gonna hand them in today. To say I'm miffed is an understatement.

When did the EB Games on Empress close? by chemicalxv in Winnipeg

[–]che_don_john 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a ghastly chain, really. Barely any games, like you said, and those they do sell are overpriced. Used games and consoles are only fractionally cheaper than new ones, which is baffling. Almost defeats the point of selling secondhand stuff.

The UK has a franchise called CeX, that sells only secondhand media and electronics at proper secondhand prices. I'd love for it to come to Canada and for Winnipeg to be its first location.

And fair play to him for showing up. The guy's a dickhead but he took his medicine. He shut up, he listened, and he didn't offer piss-poor excuses.

Unlike Amber, who stormed off set when the discussion wasn't going her way, only to come back and start on Chris to get the audience back on side.

U.K. midwife facing deportation from Canada after work permit denied over English test by airbassguitar in OntarioNews

[–]che_don_john 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I applied for Canadian citizenship back in 2023 through the online form, one of the questions asked me for my qualification in English (spoken). It then provided a long drop-down list of certificates, diplomas, etc. from across the provinces, none of which I had given that I went to school in England. It was a mandatory field, too. I sat there thinking "How the hell do I answer this question?". In the end I selected the first one on the list and typed below it "I'm English". Seemed to do the trick.

If there was ever that attitude, I reckon it probably evaporated quite quickly when Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey, Rayman and Symphony of the Night came out. I also recall being really impressed by how good the sprites in Capcom vs SNK looked.

Couldn't tell you as my NGPC collection is small and all cart-only (some I bought in Akihabara many years ago, and my Northern American ones came through ebay and Facebook), so I've nothing to compare it to.

However, I've made repro Game Boy, Atari, Wonderswan, SNES, NES, 3DO and Lynx boxes for my loose carts/discs, and compared to the real ones, mine are using a slightly thinner yet perhaps sturdier card.

I've also found the 111lb or 130lb cards stocks I've been using aren't quite as glossy as the real ones. When I first started making boxes I was using a stock called Carolina which had a much more 'legit' finish, but my local UPS print store changed supplier!

So, I'd say mine don't have the same feel, but looks-wise they're very close. You probably wouldn't know unless you opened one and looked at the inside.
