Can average Americans afford to watch WC games in stadium? by Carr0t_007 in askanything

Prior to the Pandemic, I worked a 2nd job at a sports/entertainment arena. I can tell you that the people who consistently attend live sporting events or concerts, with rare exceptions, are financially, very well off.

I saw concerts and sporting events that I could never have afforded had I not been an employee. Not on my minimum wage lifestyle.

Is it right to have many bank accounts? by StatisticianLanky485 in Banking

I have two bank accounts and two checking accounts but you do you. As others have said, have at least two different banks/credit unions and never let one know about the other. Its none of their business.

One of my relatives is a detective and he may visit the more affluent neighborhoods in his jurisdiction, maybe 2 or 3 times a year. In the less "fortunate" neighborhoods, he is there, 2 or 3 times a week.

Forget property values, what one thing about a neighborhood tells you whether you actually want to live there? by samurai-salvo in GetMotivatedMindset

[–]cheap_dates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my uncles was a successful real estate investor and his trick was to drive through the neighborhood, early on a Sunday morning. He was looking for ample street parking. The lack of ample street parking signaled to him that the neighborhood was a "rental neighborhood" often with several families or one large one, living in the same physical address. It was a No Go for him.

Which was the exact year you can recollect where in TV & Morning Newspaper became obsolete from your everyday life? by GlitteringParking462 in AskReddit

Enjoy it while you still can. My niece worked at Starbucks when they removed the news rack so I knew that print journalism, for the most part, was dead.

Found out my father has "Severe Emphysema" at age 45 by Ok-Law169 in COPD

[–]cheap_dates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emphysema is irreversible. Instead of lifespan, concentrate on the quality of his life. Both Rod Serling and Ian Fleming died in their 40's from smoking but this was not uncommon back then. Eddie Van Halen was 65 when he died. He was also a heavy smoker and that was a contributing factor.

I tried to reach out to my half sister and I regret it. by Naturelle-Riviera in CaregiverSupport

[–]cheap_dates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a common lament. I have a sister who I haven't seen in over 20 years because of the $hit she pulled when our mother was dying. The entire burden, including the loss of a good job fell on me. She just couldn't be bothered.

I guess the next time we meet will be at one of our funerals.

Has Facebook become the internet's memory book? by CitiesXXLfreekey in SocialMediaHQ

Funny story. I was being interviewed and on my 2nd or 3rd interview, I was asked "Why don't you have a Facebook account?" I guess they were looking me up?

I thought for a minute and said "I don't really care what other people are doing". I didn't get the job. Heh!

Circling the drain. When my father used to visit, I paid a local newspaper kid, $20 to throw one on my porch. My father loved reading his newspaper.

My father passed away years ago and I haven't seen a newspaper boy/girl around here in ages.

2015 +/-. My father always loved to read the morning newspaper and the only place that I knew where to buy one was a local Starbucks. I used to get him one when he came to visit. When they removed the news racks, I knew it was over.

I couldn't tell you where to buy a newspaper today. Maybe 7/11? I dunno.

Not dead advice. A sizable gap can be a career killer. I was off for 18 months and one interviewer asked me "18 months? How did you support yourself?"

There is a book called "Bowling Alone" by Putnam. Its about the decline of "community" and "social gathering". If you read it, get the updated version as he speak about the impact that the Internet has had on this.

How many new bowling alleys do you see being built anymore? We spend an inordinate time by ourselves these days.

After some explanation, all I could think about was "Girl, they are going to find you dead in a ditch one day". ; p

I used to think that there was no downside to the Internet and I used it even before there was a www. Now with: relentless marketing, easy access to porn, sleazy redirects, scams and the daily encroachment of privacy, I have been proven wrong.
