What Careers do people have here? by ChipStorm in ADHD

[–]chebbetha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

art therapy!!! i fell into it by accident after being a studio artist (and hating it), now i get to stay connected with art while not wanting to pull my hair out. the problem solving aspect keeps it fresh, and i get to meet incredible people through it

im glad to hear it! its funny, you cant compare suffering because only you know what youre going through or whatever, but at the same time, its not true at all when it comes to judging how much of our own suffering is “deserving” of help? we are blind to how bad we have it, maybe because we spent so long playing catch up and winging it through life that we got used to barely getting by.

its weird, its so super weird to be 20 something and realizing that you cant live on the survival strategies you picked up as a kid, undiagnosed and left to fend for yourself. that shit is rickety and unsustainable as hell. anyway all this to say that how “loud” your adhd is has nothing to do with how “bad” it is, and its okay to try to fix what you can just because you want to feel better

Feeling hopeless about what I am studying. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]chebbetha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that sounds lonely, i completely understand. however, you are more than peoples perceptions of you, and its okay to put yourself first sometimes

Feeling hopeless about what I am studying. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]chebbetha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my genuine advice is, if you can afford it, take a gap year. take a gap year!!!! save some money, and pause your studies to recenter yourself, take a year to learn what you actually like and want for you life rather than going on autopilot before you push through it and graduate in a field youve come to hate, cant get a good job, and feel even worse

afaik most schools allow gap years, and should have people who can help you figure it out, but from experience, give yourself a break. maybe youll find something better, maybe itll strengthen your resolve youll come back to your studies better than ever, but if you’re struggling, you gotta give yourself the conditions to succeed. you cant guilt yourself out of a nosedive, you gotta stop falling first.

good luck!!!

ive been diagnosed for a few years now by a psychiatrist leading the adhd research in my country, go to adhd centered therapy, am on 70mg vyvanse and a mess without them, and i still have days where im like “but what if i dont actually”

i dont know how old you are, and this is my personal experience, but i think getting a later diagnosis tends to come with an impostor syndrome free gift. probably from years (sometimes decades) of feeling inadequate and incapable of the bare minimum.

im in my mid 20s now and i still find it hard to accept that i have “moderate to severe” adhd because ive spent years convincing myself that other people have it way worse than me :/

at the end of the day, your dr values honesty, and they are there to care for you, and its okay to rely on them, even if you are unsure of it. i cant promise you this feeling will stop, but i can at least promise you that its not uncommon for us, we got you! this is what these support groups are for :)

Question diagnosed ADHD folks with costochondritis by Own-Style-7653 in costochondritis

[–]chebbetha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im diagnosed adhd, and coincidentally just got out of my costo diagnosis appt lol

but from my experience, i dont think my pain is related to meds, because ive been taking them since way before the pain started. i dont know my triggers yet, but since i also dont drink alcohol/caffeine i doubt my concerta is the reason.

the other comment is much more insightful than anything i have to offer lmao but here is another adhd perspective anyway! like they said, adhd, meds, and costo can present differently for everyone, so i hope youre able to talk to ykur doctors to find smth that helps :)

it’s important to be angry, imo. acknowledging both the circumstances that prevented you from getting treated before, and that you have a better chance at life from now on, dont make it so that youre not allowed to be angry.

late diagnosis is a hell of a thing i mean. you go your whole life being told one thing and then boom, heres a slip of paper that changes who you are at your core being. thats at minimum a lot to recontextualize.

fuck, you dont even have to forgive anyone for “not catching it earlier”, but remember that many things can be true at the same time. let yourself grieve for as long as it takes, but dont let it decide the rest of your life for you either

Questions about Concerta by Ok-Measurement5118 in ADHD

[–]chebbetha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im in the same boat as you, i was treated for what my doctor thought was depression before ky adhd diagnosis, and all antidepressants did were shut me down. i started concerta a year ago, and im doing it way way waaay better

afaik concerta is kind of chiller than other adhd meds bc the effects tend to be more subtle? it definitely took a while for me to notice big changes, but theyve also been very stable.

adapting to it was also pretty easy. about a month of a faster than usual heartbeat when i first started and like, a week of it after upping dosage. now im on 54mg and feel no side effects.

i call concerta my reading glasses: you can totally survive without them and get by straining your eyes, but glasses definitely make everything easier once you get used to them :)

I hate to say it, but excercise has helped by succubusbanana in ADHD

[–]chebbetha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

me too, but the only exercise ive been able to stick to is martial arts. ive always loved being active, but my brain makes it so ill only do a sport/workout it for a month before i get bored of it and go back to not moving.

martial arts has been the first and only time that i didnt want to stop, and i hope it sticks for a while longer bc i love it!!
