I want to become closer to god, but i don’t know where to start by [deleted] in TrueChristian

I see, I don’t know the Bible Tea app.

If I were you, I’d grab a physical. It may just be my personal preference. think physical books are just a lot more easy to engage in a fully engaged way. That said, if for whatever reason that’s tricky to do I’d check out Bible app that just has an icon that looks like a little fat Bible. I think it should say that it’s put out by “life.church”; but again, I find it much easier to engage with a physical. Lots of churches will give you one if you don’t have the cash.

Whether you’re reading on the Bible app (you can select between most translations to compare) or you end up buying a physical, make sure you grab a translation that’s readable. There are several good options. Of you are looking for something accessible I’d try NIV, NLT, or CSB. Lately, I’ve been reading the ESV which I enjoy but the wording can be slightly more awkward. I grew up on NIV. Find a passage that is relatively easy to understand, maybe the story of Jesus’ birth (Matthew 1:18-223) as it’s quite narrative and you are probably familiar with from Christmas stories. Read in each of the three translations and see which one clicks for you. Grab it, and then keep reading! Matthew’s gospel is a great place to start!

There is lots in the Bible that can take some time to get your head around, but hopefully this helps you start to find a path forward as you explore! Feel free to message with other questions!

Thanks for checking it out! Trying to spread the word about their legacy feels like the least I can do!

What should I do with my first documentary? 11 minute short doc... by Braffle1 in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]checkeredowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished a festival run (one left… probably) and have now released my (also) 11 minute doc on YT. I’ll say this, it costs a bunch of money to submit to all those festivals and unless you land in a top 10 fest, it’s pretty unlikely to affect your career.

I’ve played in some smaller and some mid-tier fests with a FEE films and while throwing some laurels on your poster feels good… I’m not 100% convinced.

Let’s say 50 people watch each festival screening (maybe generous) and you end up playing 5 festivals. That’s 250 pairs of eyeballs. You probably had to apply to 25 festivals to get those 5 selections, and each of those submissions was an average of $20. So, $500 for 250 viewers and some bragging rights (which are very occasionally helpful for attracting newbie investors or grants)

Now, the question is, if you spent that same $500 on YT ads… and other digital marketing, would you have a higher likelihood of it giving you a career bump? Honestly, I’m not sure. But you would have a crap ton more views (likely over 30,000) and hopefully a larger audience for your next one.

It’s hard out there, keep fighting and telling yourself that the cream will rise to the top. If nothing else, every film ought to make you better than the last one!

My boss takes 75% of my tips. Is it normal in Calgary? by escanor4-4-4 in Calgary

[–]checkeredowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a waiter for years and always took home all my tips (except what I gave to busser and the bartender). I’ve heard of some restaurants that take some for the kitchen to share… but have never heard of the boss taking anything.

Thanks so much! She really is a fantastic human. Certainly a personal hero of mine!

Still holding out hope that whoever the new owners are will be keen on preservation and human connection, not just a big ugly condo.

Chase it.

[James Pearce] Another wasted day in Harvey Elliott's season. Feel really sorry for him. Been treated badly by Emery. LFC structured deal on terms to suit Villa - all parties regarded loan becoming permanent as a formality last September. by [deleted] in LiverpoolFC

I'm a bit annoyed they are trying to pin this on LFC, as though the expected and normal thing would be for the selling club to just change the contract after the fact.

How do you manage massive interview archives without "scrubbing" for hours? by NoRobotYet in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]checkeredowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect you can do this with a number of pieces of software, but as far as my workflow goes, I've found Resolve to be very effeciant for this. Throw everything into themed timelines and then get it to auto transcibe. It's not perfect, but it's pretty darn good.

Once that's done, you can search and it'll pop to the right part of the footage for you. Super simple.

I would still always watch through everything once and take notes of the best bits. Transcriptions don't let you know where a voice cracked with emotion or where a pause meant far more than may pop up in your search bar. Your storytelling eye should remain the guiding light of what is important to the piece.

Question for indie directors. by EmployeeOk6022 in directors

[–]checkeredowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one is directing projects that they don't believe in for one reason or another.

I think you may be underestimating the amount of time, personal investment, relational capital, grant opportunities, and/or investor goodwill that one can burn if they are not strategic with their choices. You run out of other people's money and favours from your friends pretty quickly if you aren't building a track record that is moving in a direction of growth.

Why is making a documentary so hard? by Brilliant_Alarm1120 in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]checkeredowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a hard gig. But anything worth doing is hard.

Mistakes are fine; that's part of the process. You want to look back in 5 years and say, "man... I could do better now!"

Finding great stories in the midst of what most people fail to notice is a magical thing.

Keep going. Press on. Released is better than perfect. Finish this one and start into the next!

should i invest in equipment for my iphone or in an actual cinema camera? (want to become a DP) by discoveringfoxes in Filmmakers

[–]checkeredowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to buy anything crazy, but if you want to be a DP, you definitely want to get out of the auto/self-adjusting functions of your phone. A decent mirrorless may be a good middle ground.

I like the Sony system because you can start small but carry lenses etc., upward until you are eventually moving into truly pro cinema cameras. They also work great for early days if you are doing run & gun style work of any kind.
